what to wear for my 50th?

lilolilmanchester · 20/07/2012 17:17

at risk of outing myself.... am 5'4"; size 14 (possibly 12 by the time it comes but most likely somewhere in-between)... want to look good but not like mutton dressed as lamb......... winter do, disco, not too posh, but not too casual.

What should I wear?

Am joining this thread with interest as I am 50 next year! Similar size to you though am also hoping to be svelte by the time the evil day comes. Feel should be sophisticated and grown up in line with age but in reality want to wear short floaty, flowery skirt, thick tights and doc martens - when will I start to actually feel like a grown up? Nice wrap dress and stonking heels?

hope this thread helps you too mum47 .. personally prefer the (age appropriate) rock chick look to floaty and flouncy, which isn't me at all

thank you so much for looking clure.

First one is too short for me
Second is my favourite - can see me wearing that
Third is a bit too "work like", and whilst I don't want to show lots of breast, the neckline is a bit high; ditto fourth, which is lovely but too high necked and a bit short.

So, yes, would wear dress no. 2 (might order, just so I've got it) ... but am probably more a trousers and top kinda gal - but want something a bit special

that is gorgeous donotsquandertime - but I am not tall/slim enough for that, I'd look frumpy in it. But it is lovely.

oh wow, that Karen Millen dress is gorgeous, and looks like it could be very forgiving on the old curves! Will see if I can find it to try on somewhere, but yes, could go for that, thank you.

P.S. am definitely curvy, wouldn't go as far as sexy!

Not really relevant but the thread as of writing is 'vag balls' sorry OP but both titles together brought out a drunken snurk.

c0rms1lkye ? really like that dress but feel it?s more for a work do than 50th (might buy it anyway cos very much my style, just not for that particular ?do? )

Clure ? absolutely love that? and the colour is better for me than previous KM dress ? think KM is going to be my friend on this one.

Lisaro, haven?t got a clue what you are on about but you made me Grin

Thank you everyone

Sorry, just re read. The title of this thread was immediately above a thread titled vag balls. Hope that made more sense and glad it made you smile anywauGrinGrin

... but back to the thread - anyone else got any ideas? The two Karen Millen dresses are my favourites so far.

That said, likely to dance a lot so trousers and option - so ideas for a trouser/top combo to suit the occasion would be appreciated. Plus more dresses along the KM lines.

Although why I am thinking about it now, I don't know cos hope to lose some weight before then so won't buy anything until nearer the time, and will be asking the same question again in a couple of months

Don't know what your budget is but have you looked on LK Bennet? I'm 5'1", hourglass shape - 12 on top 14 on bum/hips and the wrong side of 50. I've got the Davina dress in plum/purple for a wedding and it is soooo flattering. Horrendous price but could be worn again and again. They have lots of party type dresses and having tried on nearly all the dresses in Coast, Phase 8 etc etc found their stuff v flattering. Was a recent thread on here about rudeness of LKB staff recently. I've only ever been in this one time but assistant couldn't have been more helpful and sweet.

thanks popped out... no, don't have a budget it mind - if I see something "wow" for the night that can be worn over and over, will spend more. Am just reminding myself completely daft to be asking about it now as it's a few months away, but am getting some good ideas about the types of things to wear and where to go looking - so thank you.

I don't think it's daft at all to be looking around now lilo. This way you can get lots of ideas and try loads of stuff on without having to buy something because you've only got a few days left till the night and you're desperate. It's far more enjoyable to be able to be leisurely about it all. Would def try Coast and LK Bennet and Mint Velvet. Would also recommend trying things you wouldn't normally go for just to compare and contrast styles/shapes. Good luck on your mission.
