Hi i was wondering if anyone had any tips for growing your hair, mine never seems to get past a certain length and would love to grow it longer!

I've been using the lee stafford hair growth stuff since last september, it's definitely helped my hair, I had a short graduated bob which I wanted to grow out and by December I was able to tie it up again. My hair also looks thicker and feels thicker, so am pleased.

I had a friend who bought sea kelp tablets from holland and Barrett. They are meant to encourage your hair to grow. My friend's hair did grow quickly.

May have to try this. Got my hair cut short because I was feeling that being over 50 that's what I should do. I hate, hate, hate it! I don't want long swishy hair at my age, but it definitely needs to be longer than it is. I do mean really short, and it's really high maintainence, which was somewhat unexpected.

Will have to get to Holland and Barretts myself. I cut all my hair down to shoulder length as DD1 gave me lice and the nit comb was a right bugger to get through my long thick hair. It was down to my bra strap before.

Amargan hair therapy oil I found the best for my hair growth, although its quite dear you only need to use a few drops at a time so it lasts ages. I have been using it for 3 months and have noticed my hair has grown quickly and its in the best condition its ever been.

A few questions: (disclaimer - I am in no way a hairdresser, just a bit obsessed with hair growth since I lost mine through chemo)

Why doesn't your hair get past a certain length? Is it due to breakage? Does it just not seem to grow any longer for no reason? How often do you get it trimmed and how much taken off?

Everyone has a terminal length, which is the length a single hair can get to before it falls out and starts growing again. Hair also has a resting phase, where it doesn't actively grow. Being pregnant screws up the normal cycle of growth and puts ALL of your hair into the growth phase, which is why loads of women experience a lot of shedding post-birth.

Anyway, my point is that your hair's terminal length might actually be a lot shorter than you think. Some people are capable of knee-length hair but they're at the other end of the scale.

You might also be getting it cut too often and too much trimmed off, or not often enough before you start getting split ends and breakage.

If it definitely is due to breakage, then by all means give the supplements a try but I thought it might be helpful for you to have more to think about as it may not be as easy as taking supplements.

I will shut up now.

i second sea kelp tablets !

after having both my dc it really helped with the post childbirth hair shedding

also lots of protein in your diet is meant to help i think?

and scalp massage - increases blood flow to follicles.

There is a supplement called MSm (it's a really long name and cba to link) which is supposed to prolong your hairs growing phase before it falls out and rests again.

I'm using the solgar one but it does encourage toxins to leave your cells (no idea how) but I did get spotty when I started taking it along my jaw which is where I used to break out when I was a regular drinker.

It's also good for joints and skin, apparently it's sulphar essentially which is easily lost in food production due to depleted levels in soil etc.

Anyway I havent been taking it long enough to say if it's good for hair or anything but I take brewers yeast and sea kelp too.

oh yeah and i am a coconut oil obsessive devotee and while i can't say it wil make your hair grow any faster it WILL make it healthier and shinier and it seems to "fatten up" each strand. so it will make it look much better as it grows

use it as a leave in conditioner overnight then shampoo it out in the morning

i have never had such good hair since i have been doing this

basic science: hair growth rate and length is determined by follicle lifecycle and is genetic. Overall health also matters.

hair is dead and nothing you put on it makes any difference. Treating it better will stop it breaking off.

supplements do nothing.

Don't brush it, just run your fingers through it. I have really thick, bushy, curly, dry, nesty hair and even I have managed to ditch the brush. I used to tip my head upside down and brush my hair over the toilet and there was always loads of 1cm pieces of hair on the porcelain. When I 'brush' with my fingers, this doesn't happen and my hair has achieved at least an extra 3 inches in length.

There is a magic potion. It is actually marketed for horses. Horses often have their manes or areas of their coat rubbed off by rugs. This stuff is used to get the hair to grow back quickly, and it is magic. It works an absolute treat for human hair too, and is a bit of a cult item among hair bloggers. It is called MegaTek rebuilder by Equss:
www.horsehealth.co.uk/grooming/featured-brands/eqyss-range/mega-tek-rebuilder

There is a human version marketed in America but it is much more expensive for the same ingredients. It is basically Hydrogonized Keratin, and it genuinely does make your hair grow.

The best thing I've found for hair growth is a stimulator lotion by fushi, approved by me and most of my gfs! Also love the really good hair oil by them, males my hair so soft and shinny, couldn't believe a product could do this. I've tried loads before - argan oil, coconut oil, none are as good though.

dear oh dear. Bad science in action big time here.

it does encourage toxins to leave your cells

hahahahahahaha....

any marketing that talks about toxins is bollocks by definition. You have kidneys BTW.

here are the ingredients in the horse magic potion and what some of them do.

Deionized water - first ingredient so the biggest.
Stearalkonium Chloride - a softener
Glycerol Stearate - makes the horse shiny
Cetearyl Alcohol (Derived from Palm Oil) - and therefore ethically iffy
Caster Oil Ethoxylate (40) - makes the horse shiny
Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E)
Panthenol - makes the horse shiny
Hydrolysed Keratin Protein - does nothing
Cetrimonium Chloride,
Tetrasodium EDTA
DMDM Hydantoin
Methylparaben - stops it going off.
Propylparaben
Fragrance - makes your horse smell nice

Same as most human shampoos.

oh, and like hell does taking keratin make your hair grow. For example:

www.livestrong.com/article/69844-biotin-make-hair-grow-faster/

quote: "it is important to note that the amount of biotin you take or consume is not commensurate with the amount of hair growth that will occur."

as always: show me real evidence (scientific double blind trials in large enough quantities which prove it) and I'll believe you.

BTW I use moroccan oil on my hair and it does make it shinier, but it doesn't make it grow faster.

Can you take sea kelp whilst breast feeding?

Report
Hippychickster · 30/10/2014 07:45

I've started taking sea kelp and waiting to see if that makes a difference. I also use MooGoo shampoo and conditioner. They have no silicates etc in and are so natural you could eat them, and my hair feels lovely and soft and much thicker.

Could all be in my imagination though!
