what does it actually smell like?
is it worth the price tag?

I think it's vile - very strong, old-fashioned and distinctive. You would want to smell it before you bought it - it's not a light and easy-to-wear fragrance.

Is it worth the price tag? Well it is if you like it - lasts for ever on the skin, like all the Chanel fragrances. I wouldn't buy it, but I don't like it!

It's a heavy, old sort of smell IMO.

As for 'what does it smell like' - it's hard to describe as it doesn't smell like anything else IYSWIM. I cannot compare it to any other fragrance....

Hmm kind of sweet, but heavy? A bit powdery but strong. With a funny base note that makes me retch.

Chanel No. 5 is classified as a floral-aldehyde. Its top notes include ylang ylang, neroli and aldehydes; its mid notes May rose and jasmine; and its base notes sandalwood, vetiver and vanilla. Definitely worth the price tag. It's incredibly sexy and sophisticated.

yes powdery describes it quite well.

No 19 is easier to wear, it's fresher.

I have to say I love it, but then I'm quite old. It's not a young woman's perfume.

Grockle · 26/12/2011 21:17

I want to like it but dont. It smells like my grandmother. Chanel do younger smelling perfumes.

My Gran used to wear it. It is definitely not a young person's perfume to me because of that.

How old are you? What other perfumes do you like?

Have to say I am generally a fan of heavy 'old' fragrances (am 32 but would wear Youth Dew, for example) but I personally don't like No.5. I do like Coco, which is also quite an 'old' heavy type perfume (a classic too). If you like Mademoiselle try the original Coco too.

...My personal favourite for a 'sophisticated' classic fragrance that is grown-up and quite strong smelling is 'Knowing' from Estee Lauder. My mum wears it and I love it, but it is 'her' smell IYSWIM so doesn't feel right for me to wear it.

I didn't realise perfumes had age ranges. i am late thirties and wear Chance. Is that too young?

I have been given a bottle of Chanel No19 edp 100ml. It just isnt me. I like Angel, Jimmy Choo, Jo Malone pomegranite noir. I am going to have to sell it as it is too expensive to give away and I cant exchange it as I opened the box to smell it yesterday.

Ooooh I like Armani Mania - quite spicy. Never smelled the DKNY one.

I have also worn Pleasures (although not for years, wore it constantly throughout university and got bored with it).

We have similar tastes judging by your chosen perfumes, so try:

Lolita Lempicka (the original one in a lime green box with a purple apple shaped bottle - delicious, and very unusual scent)
Vivienne Westwood - Boudoir (smells like a mix of flowers and sex - always get compliments on this one - and it lasts for ever)
Christian Dior - J'Adore, Dune, Diorissimo
Estee Lauder - Knowing
Thierry Mugler - Angel (my signature scent)
Chanel - Coco, Allure Sensuelle

what does it smell like? Couldn't say really, possibly dignified but a bit staid. Which may be right, depends. Have to smell it on yourself to know if you'd like it.

Report
ZZZenAgain · 26/12/2011 21:50

well that's tosh, isn't it? Doubt it smells dignified and staid - that will be my associations.

It is popular, it might be right for you, try it.

I like it and have received one for Christmas. DH isn't too keen on it but he decided to get me something I liked this time round. I'm not sure I'd recpgnise the smell on others but I like it on me.
