Hair Dye - Can i pull this off?

My hair at the moment is a med reddish brown, coloured and dull. My roots are about half an inch long and are lighter. I've come across two dyes while sorting one of my cupboards out, they're not that old, only a few mths but i must of forgotten about those! Anyway, they are both Clariol nice and easy, semi permanent.

One is Light Ash Brown and the other is Light Golden Brown! I was thinking that i can't put the light golden brown all over my hair as it may make my roots ginger, or glow, but it may give the rest of my hair a nice golden sheen to it.

However If i was to put the light ash brown colour all over, that will be great for my roots, however, it may darken the rest of my hair.

So i thought, maybe i could dye my roots with the ash brown and colour the lengths of my hair with the golden brown, iukwim? Would it be too risky to attempt to do both at the same time, ie - colour roots then apply other colour to my lengths? Or would the light golden brown just darken my lengths?

I have no idea. It all sounds far too complicated and i can never understand what hair dye names mean anyway.

Chuck them out and splash a fiver on the right colour.

I think you might end up with two-tone hair. And not in a good way.

where is tatty when you need her?!

I AM NOT A HAIR DYE EXPERT, JUST DO A LOT OF HOME COLOURING. (So this is not professional advice!). i think that "golden" has warm tones, so would brighten up mousyness. And I think that "ash" has mouse tones, which would tone down redness. If that is the case then you probably want the "golden" on the roots and the "ash" on the red bits. I think doing both at the same time is very risky. Probably your best bet is to try to get the colour the same all over. If you no longer want to be reddish, may be try to get as much of the red out (use colourB4, head and shoulders or bleach bath depending on how long you've been dying it for), then try to colour the result to match your roots. Then dye over the lot to get the end result you want. Really time consuming and boring. Would be easier to go to a salon, as it sounds like your hair colour has got a bit complicated. But then it would cost lots more, and the result is not guaranteed anyway.
