All the bloody time Hmm. I often flog them on eBay and recoup some of the loss. Sometimes I even make a profit but I'd still rather have had the sense not to buy the thing in the first place.

CointreauVersial · 01/09/2011 17:54

No, I usually keep the labels on until I'm absolutely 1000% certain, but I do sometimes get caught out. DD1 is a devil for doing this; makes me vvv cross.

Hullygully · 01/09/2011 17:56

85 million times

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 01/09/2011 17:57

I do this, much more often than is healthy. I am currently hating a Boden dress bought 2 months ago. I took the bloody label out as it was itching the back of my neck. Wore the dress twice and now hate it.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/09/2011 17:58

Probably a third of the time. I picked up a lovely navy, wrap dress in TKMaxx and tried it on - I only came to my senses when I was in the queue to pay for it and realised that the blue dress I had on (Boden) was nicer, suited me and fitted me better than the one I was about to buy.

I have masses of clothes to Ebay but people are such cocks on there I haven't got round to it.

I'm friggin useless

tethersend · 01/09/2011 17:58

All the bloody time.

tethersend · 01/09/2011 18:00

I am the queen of queue moments of clarity Grin

That's why internet shopping is so bad...

I think I just go for the nicest thing in the shop, rather than buying it on its own merits IYSWIM.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 01/09/2011 18:01

Yes, although I am getting better. A bit.

CarlaBruni · 01/09/2011 18:05

All the time. But have now realised you should try stuff on first (obvious). Also, if I'm dithering, I'll walk around with it in the shop and then just put it back. If I don't feel bothered about it, I didn't really want/suit it My wardrobe is full of so many mistakes

MissBeehiving · 01/09/2011 18:41

I used to be really awful but now I have RULES.

  1. Never buy anything you don't really really like. Even if it is a plain white t shirt.
  2. Try things on.
  3. If it doesn't fit properly don't buy it.
  4. Send things back straightaway.
  5. If all else fails flog it immediately on ebay.
HellonHeels · 01/09/2011 18:42

Am a bit Shock that someone would actually wear a garment with the tags in and then return it. Ewwwww!

Did you mean to say that you cut the labels off and then regret the purchase?

I have a lot of clothes I've worn then decided I hated. Seem to do it more when I'm less happy with my weight. Finally got around to ebaying some of them recently but it's an effort.

orienteerer · 01/09/2011 18:43

Not very often but did recently buy some Phase Eight trousers in the sale. Thought they looked great in shop mirror, cut off label, wore them twice and realised I hated themHmm.

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/09/2011 18:55

Never take the labels off until you've actually worn it.

If you haven't worn it within 2 weeks - take it back (exceptions like ski-wear allowed)

And then be ruthless - go through your wardrobe every 3 months and ebay stuff.

niminypiminy · 01/09/2011 18:56

I've also got Clothes of Shame in my wardrobe. Not so much recently, since I formulated my own version of MissBeehiving's rules. Mine include:

Only buy something on the internet that I instantly absolutely know is right. Internet buys that I mull over are always, always wrong. If they are wrong then instant return is the only way.

When shopping, if it doesn't look as nice or nicer than what I am wearing then it goes back on the hanger.

A friend of mine has a rule that if you try on three things and none looks nice you should give up for the day. It's obviously a day when nothing will look nice on you. I quite like that one.

Also I like MissBeehiving's rule about having to really like things. If a purchase doesn't make my heart sing a little bit it's all wrong.

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/09/2011 18:56

Am laughing at my own exception - like I ever go ski-ing Grin

moonshine · 01/09/2011 19:05

A common scenario for me is try an item on, think it looks good and wear it out. And then I catch sight of myself in a mirror and just think 'what the hell was I thinking'! Confused

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/09/2011 19:10

Moonshine - I have 2 mirrors at home. One lovely and one well it could make you cry as its so unforgiving.

But when I purchase something new I try it on at home in the bad mirror if I look ok in that - then I keep it.

MissBeehiving · 01/09/2011 19:17

I always buy things that I love when I see them, even if it's the wrong season because I always make mistakes when I am looking for something in particular.

I am larfing at Mrs CB's ugly mirror. I would be too scared to have that in the house! Grin

stripeybump · 01/09/2011 19:21

Tethers - my sister has a phrase 'best thing in a crap shop' to refer to those times when you spend ages wandering round a shop seeing nothing (because it's all shit) then try on a few things and decide they're great. Best thing in a crap shop syndrome. Look great compared to all the other shite.

moonshine · 01/09/2011 19:22

I think that I convince myself that I love something because I want to believe that this is the item which will make me look like Christina Hendricks although I actually end up looking like Dame Edna Everage.

teahouse · 01/09/2011 19:31

I buy far too many retail therapy items so have awardrobe full of lovely clothes that fit and look great but I have no where to wear them ;o(

Elliptic5 · 01/09/2011 19:46

With you there teahouse - I keep trying to train myself to only buy clothes which suit my lifestyle but I keep slipping back to old ways.

Haha yes the old 'if I buy this bargain party dress I will miraculously get invited to loads of glamorous parties' impulse buy. I have lots of that too.

MissKittyEliza · 02/09/2011 10:14

Yep.... Frequently. Most often, it's something I really like but need to lose 10lbs to wear comfortably. And I never do.

CakeandRoses · 02/09/2011 12:17

i've recently had my colours and 'style' done with house of colour and have made far less mistakes of this kind since as i'm much better at focusing on the right stuff for me.

like others, i still keep the labels in clothes until i'm totally sure tho. i recently wore a skirt out twice and then still took it back Blush
