Ooh is this a surprise break by any chance?

Are you flying? If so, you will need to slim down your toiletries. You have to have everything in bottles/containers of 100ml or less, and you need to be able to get your all these containeers into a small plastic bag - about 20cm by 20cm I think. This is a real hassle. However, Boots etc have wised up and now sell travel sizes of shampoo, deodorant, contact lens fluid, suncream etc.

Shoes - I'd suggest 1 pair of going out shoes, one pair comfy walking around shoes, and one pair flip flops. If you have some shoes which would do for 2 of these roles so much the better!

Clothes. Roll up small items like underwear and T shirts and stuff them in the small spaces between the larger items and in your shoes and at the corners of the bag. You want things that don't crumple ideally, so jersey is good. Something lightweight and comfy for during the day. Jersey sundresses are great, or shorts/skirts and T shirts. Jewellery and scarves to dress up "plain" clothes if you go somewhere smarter. You will want something warmer to wear on the plane as they air condition to death - light trousers and a cardi maybe (cardi also needed for chilly evenings). Say one warm cardi/jumper and one lighter one. Sunglasses of course! A hat if you burn.

Remember you may need to be able to get your handbag into your carry on bag (Ryanair are strict about this).

Check what your accommodation will provide eg there may be a hairdryer which means you don't need to bring one (I never do anyway... but then I have fairly easy hair).

Erm that's it for off the top of my head, hope that helps. Have fun!

Not a surprise, a last minute break to Italy. Ive just realised Ive done nothing and Im going at 6am. Tried to save money by only taking hand baggage but am regretting it now. I imagine that day time out fits will change to evening ones on the same day. There will be lots of walking involved!!

I should go and see what I can find.

Thanks. I think it will be the shoe situation that finishes me!

I've done six days before on only hand luggage (proud).

Two bottoms (jeans/skirts/trousers) and then one top for each day, plus a spare in case of accidents. One pair of shoes worn, or, if you need to wear one and take the other. Decant all toiletries into smaller bottles and SERIOUSLY think about what you actually need. Underwear for each day, + two pairs of spare pants. If it's cold (italy probably not that much) one jumper/cardigan

Tah dah!

I realise you are probably there now, but I did 10 days in Spain with DH and DD (3) on hand luggage only. Wouldn't go back to check-in luggage now, as I still had things we didn't wear. Stick to the bear minimum and buy general toiletries there. You feel so smug with your little carry-on bag heading to the exit while everyone else is queuing for baggage reclaim!
