Dye hair tonight even though i've washed & conditioned it this morning?

Hi all, even though i've coloured my hair a million times, i can't say i've ever dyed it the same day as i've washed and conditioned it, as i've always thought dyes should really be applied to 'unwashed' hair, something to do with conditioner acting as a barrier? (even though it was rinsed out).

Should i wait another day or two before colouring my hair? Maybe it wont take, its a permanent dye, the semis were washing out too quickly!

does't seem to make any diff to mine. The conditioner residue won't leave your hair after a couple of days, you'd just have extra natural oil for the dye to contend with.

If you put dye onto "old" hair won't it have a layer of hair oil on it?

Ideally I suppose you'd wash and not condition, then put dye on.

Its none of those things. Its because after a day or two of not washing, there is a film of oil on the scalp which sort of protects it from the hair dye, acting as a barrier.

Its only really relevant if you are a bit sensitive to the dye and its more relevant when you go to the hairdresser as the peroxide (or "releaser/oxidiser") that hairdressers use is generally stronger than what comes in box dyes.

In an ideal ideal world you wouldn't condition and you'd use a PH balanced shampoo but to be honest with bog standard dyes you can do it whenever and wont have a problem unless you are specifically troubleshooting something.

If you are worried, wash your hair with baby shampoo (ph balanced and no silicones or whatever) and dry it before dying, but not if your scalp is sensitive.

But... I don't want my hair to be protected from the dye, do I? I want the dye to get to my hair. Don't I?

I loathe not washing my hair daily so have always dyed it when it's clean, using permanent dye, and never had any problems.ng my hair daily so have always dyed it when it's clean, using permanent dye, and never had any problems.

To second Heiferlump I have dyed my own hair clean, dirty, somewhere in between...have also been to hairdresser with reasonably dirty hair (and apologised), the've said no worries, its better that way - yet have also been with clean styled hair to show the stylist the style, and that's never been a problem.

Conclusion - it doesn't matter, but its elf n safety innit, if they say dirty hair they will get less complaints of scalp sensitivity or less bad reviews saying the dye is harsh.
