I'm 5ft 5" a size 14/16, have mid length light brown hair ( i quite like my hair btw) I'm not dog ugly so i've been told, 49 years old and desperate.

Please link me anything, I don't suit red and do tend to go for more pastel shades

Use the personal shopper servicein your nearest john lewis, house of fraser of debennhams. If you dont know what styles and shapes suit you its hard to advise just on colour. This is a big day, you want to look your best Smile

ok will try the personal shopper service but i'm not sure what type of outfit should wear without looking frumpy.

I just want some ideas until i go to JL etc

Every time i search for 'mother of the bride' all the outfits are either too expensive or just not me :(

I just feel so lost with it all, , i just want to look nice for my DD and her to be proud of me.

I zm also 49 and 5' 5" and i FORBID you to look frumpy. You are very young to be a MOB so im not surpirsed that most of the outfilts you have seen are not suitable. You need to dress as a wedding GUEST, only extra special. Forget MOB

Do you suits skirts, dresses or trousres? Long or short if dresses? Do you want to wear a hat or soemthing in your hair? How formal is the weding? What is MOG wearing?

There are no rules these days, as long as you are dressed up. Soem people wear maxis or trousres suits, doesnt need to be floaty floral chiffon ( unless thats your thing)

Do you remmeber the royal weding? Whose look did you like best and woudl suit you?

Dont panic. But go and make appointmnets for personal shoppers today, they get booked up. You have noting to lose except an aftrenoon of your time. If you dontlike anything, dont buy. nd you will have a better idea of what you do /dont like

Minky im sure you are not dog ugly.

Have a look at yourself and what you like wearing, what you feel comfortable in,what colours suit you etc (ask a friend for advice too) and go from there - generally when I think Mother of the bride I think shift dress and matching jacket and big hat Hmm but if I were mother of the bride (unlikely as I have no dd) id wear a trouser suit and heels .....

Get an idea of whats in the shops by looking online- then look around in the 'cheaper' shops - Matalan do a very smart range, dont forget charity shops and perhaps look in friends wardrobes too.

I know a very glamorous woman who im quite in awe of, she always looks very chic (its my sons friends mum) and one evening whilst stalking having too much time on my hands I studied her pics - she always has nice nails, her hair is styled- she doesnt dress any more extravagantly than me (asda stuff and next type of things) but she smiles and looks like shes having a nice time.

Also be aware that nice jewellry can make or break an outfit - your DD will be proud of you -you need to be proud of you too and stop putting yourself down.

Thank you nickschick that's really lovely of you. I think i'm going to stop looking for MOB as such and just go for super duper wedding guest!

The wedding is a civil service for about 35 and then a nice meal, later on a hog roast and live singer with about 150.

My usual day time when not at work is just T shirts and 3/4 trousers, if going out i tend to go for dresses. I do seem to have a lot of linen in my wardrobe [hmm[ not sure if this is good or bad. Tend to live in flip flops (nice ones not cheap plastic) in summer and flattish boots winter, not all that good with heels. Mind you only wear heels if going out in the evening and if wine is involved then lets just say i may have fallen over once or twice Wink

Have been looking on JL and HoF to get a few ideas

tethersedn is queen of S&B links. if its out there, she will find it for you. but you are not giving her enough to go on

is that outfit too tailored for you? you said you liked pastel colours? and it Is tweedy

if you normally wear t shirts, 3/4 trousers, flip flops and boots , Im wondering if you are more a natural style . see here and here for more info

what do you think?

Report
minkymeerkat · 25/08/2011 16:39

Ref outfit from Tethers it was a bit tweedy for me and possibly too tailored.

Very interesting link Kristina although not sure where exactly i fit in maybe somewhere between classic and romantic?

What else can i say to help?

I'm not worried about my hair or make up etc as always ok with that (was a hair dresser many moons ago). I tend to go for soft beige eyeshadow and pink sheer lippy. Hair colour is light golden brown (said so on the box)

Areas i hate are my stomach and chunky ankles, no matter what weight i am they are never slim.

I seem to suit softer colours rather than black, red or anything too dramatic as they can make me look washed out.
