We are off on hols soon. Luxor for 7 days. I think I have far too many clothes.

I have 2 maxi dresses, 3 long skirts, tops of numerous colours, lengths etc. 3 pairs of linen trousers, 1 pair of long denimish colour trousers, 4 pairs (long) shorts, swimwear, underwear, 2 long sleeved loose linen tunics.

Is this too much? I havent even started on shoes yet! Grin

Are you planning on wearing the long trousers/skirts only once? I usually take one dress, two pairs long trousers and three skirts with interchangeable tops for a fortnight!

Oh good grief. For 7 days?!

2 x swimming costume/bikini & sarong
Underwear
Layered outfit to travel there & back which can be shed when you arrive
A going-out dress if you do evening things. with a light cardy
1 maxi dress
1 skirt
1 trousers
2 tops
beach shoes
shoes you travel in

Unless you need sports stuff too?

yes, planning on wearing most things once. It is 40 degrees at the moment and I will sweat glow a lot. Grin

Just popped out and bought a new suitcase, little bigger than my usual one.

Yes. Far too much but if you leave anything now, it will be the thing you wished you had... So if you can manage it then take it and then write a list when you get home of what you actually wore so you have it for next year.

we've got plenty of room in the suitcases so Im not squeezing anything in...

will have a look later. I am worn out, think I have everything, not put shoes in yet.

Very excited.

sounds sensible to me unless you are a fan of overpriced hotel laundry services!

Report
auroraday · 14/08/2011 17:43

also it depends on the sort of holiday. do some of you really only take one going out dress in the evenings? even for a family holiday I like to have a few evening outfits for the evening meal!

More Immodium
Even more Immodium.

My holiday to Egypt was notable for the 'Gypy' Tummy. Everyone seems to get it I'm afraid. The hotel staff blame the weather Hmm.

Is it really that bad, MrsT?

I've never had tht ubiquitous holiday dodgy tum, not even in Kenya where I was warned that it was unavoidable, so I was hoping I may escape the Egyptian version too.

If you're off to the tombs you will need;

a wide brimmed hat
shoes that you can tramp across dusty/rough ground in
a light cardi - tomb visiting is better in the very early morning (dawn) - it gets far too hot in the middle of the day - but something for arm coverage would be useful

LuckyMrsT · 14/08/2011 18:27

It was for us and most people I've spoken to who've been. We were in a 5* hotel too! People just seem to accept it as unavoidable, it doesn't put people off going back. You may have guts of steel though!

I've been to Egypt 5 times and only had the runs once Smile

14 bikinis?! That is more than I have owned in my entire life. Won't be wearing one again with my saggy baby belly either.

Sanitary protection. My flatmates mum used to live in Egypt and had to send her Tampax regularly as you couldn't buy it there. This was in the 90's mind you - maybe someone else has more uptodate knowledge.

I have a wide brim hat (we all do) plan to go to Tombs early and will take sanitary protection just incase. HAve my crocs, allstars and a couple of pairs of flipflops for round the pool. Sure we will be fine.

I'm liking those odds, missbeehaving

DP and I do have pretty cast iron constitutions. I think it's related to having a distinct disregard for sell-by dates on food.

The dodgy stomach can be down to the weather. We have been 5 times and only had a dodgy stomach the first time, then our rep told us it was a mixture of two things 1) sitting in boiling heat all day then putting the air con on coolest at night - really upsets the body. We only put the air con on when we go out for dinner and turn it off when we get back in. 2) the money is filthy, always was your hands after paying for a taxi, drinks etc and before eating. Not much of an issue if you are AI but beware if you eat out.

I have multiple hand gel thingies too. Infact, I could probably set up my own Chemist when out there. Blush

Glad to find another bikini addict ENormaSnob! I'm off to Lanzarote this week for 7 days and I have about 12 bikinis, including three brand new ones that I've recently bought in the sales. To be fair some are ten years old and looking a bit thin and are only good for the bin. I'm going to try them all on again and narrow it down to seven, one for each day.

I always pack way too much on holiday so think I'll do what the poster further up said and make a list of what I do/don't wear so I know for next time.

Good to know the tip about heat in the day/air con at night too.

ENormaSnob · 14/08/2011 22:49

I love bikinis Grin

I have about 27 and have to whittle them down to a reasonable number to take each holiday. Plus I buy new every year Blush

Have a good holiday.

Nothing to do with S&B but take lots of small value notes to 'tip' if you are in the tombs as my experience was that the guides would expect that if you wanted to see certain exhibits. Also, lots of bottom-pinching!

Went to Egypt 15 years ago for 2 weeks. We did the Nile cruise then Cairo and Luxor stay.
I had a week of D&V

You will need to cover your arms and legs if you go out and about. Especially in the temples, the museum if you go there.

At the hotel they were quite laid back regarding bikinis but no topless bathing.
And my best friend was a pair of pale pink desert boots.
Hot sand in your sandles? No thanks.
Take small coins for 'baksheesh' (tips).

And a strong stomach if you like horses and donkeys.Sad

What sort of small notes? Do you mean Euro/£ coins? I have some of those in a purse in my luggage.

We have also booked a highly recommended tour guide, actually an Egyptologist via a lady who lives there and she is a mine of information. Her name is Jane Akshar if anyone wants to look on trip advisor.

I have removed 1 pair of trousers and 1 top. Grin
The tunic tops and long trousers are for covering my arms/legs and I dont go topless anyway, so no issue there.

Today is the day! so excited.
