Oil cleansing method - oily skin - how long should I give it?

I am 43 and always had oily skin, tried loads of things, always been reluctant to try the OCM, but thought I'd give it a go and see what all the fuss was about. Surprised that it does actually clean the skin, but after a couple of weeks my skin is still really oily, is it a long game? will it take a long time to make any difference?

It took a month for me. In that month I got some dry patches AND spots. Not pretty but now my skin is the best it's ever been.

Which oils are you using?

As my skin is oily I am using 30% castor oil / 70% sunflower oil. Can't say I've noticed any difference whatsoever so far, I am a bit sceptical and yet to be convinced, but I will persevere and see if anything changes.

persevere - have you considered another type of oil? I find sunflower too heavy; Jojoba is the best for oily skin!

I'm 44, have been doing it for two weeks, and have been rewarded by younger looking skin - like a spotty15 year old!
Tempted to give up because of oily plugs/bumps on my chin below the corners of my mouth. I usually only get the odd spot (hormonal?) there every couple of months.
The rest of my face is generally OK, never really dry patches as such but aware of a few crinkly bits coming under my eyes etc.
I'm using olive oil because it was all I had at the start. What is the benefit of adding castor oil and is any one oil particulalry beneficial to (ahem) maturing skin?

for oily skin Jojoba is best, you could always try a mix of Jojoba and Sweet Almond? or what about Coconut?
I did a whole feature on it, it's fantastic!

I thought that coconut blocked pores though?

I am waiting for some jojoba and some rosehip along with my castor oil and also have 43 year old slightly confused skin.

I think the castor oil draws the impurities to it clippity

Am expecting a few weeks of uggh before it all gets better

It makes a big difference if you really massage it in for a good length of time. I had stopped bothering to and was amazed when I started doing it again properly.

I use castor oil and olive oil, works fine on my oily skin.

levantine, how often do you do it?

Maybe jojoba is the way to go. Where's the best and cheapest place to get it?

Personally I think if something is going to work then it is going to work fairly quickly and make your skin feel comfortable straight away. I was never a great believer in the Clinique philosophy of 'let your new skin come through' with their super strong clarifying lotions.
My skin's quite combination for my age and I really like this: www.mamamio.com/uk/clean-slate2 because I feel like I'm getting a deep cleanse (especially when I use it with my Clarisonic) but it's also got all the firming bits and bobs I need in there as I sail towards 40! :)

I was going to recommend jojoba as well.

Report
levantine · 11/08/2011 10:25

I use it every night, don't bother in the morning, just splash with water

Report
strawberry17 · 11/08/2011 10:39

This is where for oily skin it gets tricky, I can't just splash with water it feels mucky still, so I gently exfoliate with muslin cloth with water and use a Botanics rose water toner, otherwise it just feels, well, yuck.

So is there somewhere on the High Street I can get Jojoba oil?

naturally thinking 100ml jojoba organic, cold pressed £4.00
Akamuti 150ml £8.50
Fushi as angryfeet linked too and direct to their web site new members get £10.00 off, got to spend £25 though but can include p&p.

Come on postie.

does anyone use the castor oil combo on their eye area also?

Report
FoofFighters · 12/08/2011 13:44

I use castor oil in my cleansing mix and take it over my eyes with no problem. Usually use jojoba oil on them first to take off my eye make up though.

I'm just starting my ocm...I have jojoba and will mix with 20% castor oil when I get some. Liking it so far.

I tried avocado oil but seems too heavy for my oily skin. So I'm using that as a body moisturiser :)

strawberry17 · 12/08/2011 15:07

Jojoba is on order, perhaps we should compare notes on how we get on with it Pin0t as we're both oily skinned.

i really want to start doing this now... keep reading the threads but then not actually buying the oil...

Report
Pin0t · 12/08/2011 15:11

Yeah we shall if you're up for it OP! I find the jojoba so lovely I don't usually need a moisturiser afterwards - and if I do, it's just another drop of jojoba.

Rosehip oil is good, and so is calendula.

Jojoba is SO brilliant for oily skin, will never go back to expensive and useless scrubs now.

FoofFighters · 12/08/2011 17:00

coconut oil is comedogenic so no good for the face - it can block pores and cause break-outs.
