Honestly, what size can get away with leggings?

I am good 12/14 (good as in ample), with large knees and chunky thighs. I am fed up not being able to wear any dresses that stop before my knee and really want to branch out into leggings under dresses. But, my question is, what shape do you look at doing that and think eeeeek?

IF you can wear tights, you can wear leggings.

I'm a size 14 and live in dresses and leggings. I think I look good in them so don't care what anyone else thinks.

My only rules are no tight dresses and my bottom has to be well covered!

At your size this is totally fine...well at least I hope it is I too am a 14 and live in this combo.

No-one of any size should wear leggings unless their rear is covered. As long as you follow that one simple rule, you'll be fine. I love them - I can wear much shorter dresses with leggings than I would be comfortable in without them (I'm a size 10, but I'm 50 and have never felt confident about my legs).

Out of interest are leggings suitable for us 40+ girls? I'm a size 10-12 and 44yrs and would love to try the dress/ leggings combo but am worried I am too old - be honest , am I ?!

I have been known to wear leggings with a dress and I am 50 and size 14. I do have good legs though.

Treat leggings like tights if you're not sure and you're fine.

No arse bearing / uncoveredness with leggings..

the far side do you mean good legs are a necessity then? What about chunky-but-ok-ish-middle-aged-legs?

I'm a size 24 and have to wear them as part of a fancy dress costume next week

I feel sorry for anyone looking in my direction

Also consider footless tights as they can looked a bit sleeker than leggings but give you the same cover.

I was wondering this and have asked before. I'm a size 22 and pregnant. Leggings (with a dress or long tunic top only) would be a godsend but answers have varied from God no to who cares, go for it. So I still don't know. All I do know is that I'm running out of options and leggings would be great.

As long as you don't wear them as trousers, i.e. with a waist length t shirt and no skirt then you're fine Smile

I absolutely agree. So long as they're with a long top/tunic or dress they're fine - at least for informal wear.

So I couldn't wear them with my cropped gold lame top then? Damn, will have to think again.... No most of my tops are near knee length anyway. I don't really do shorter than that.

I wish they'd just start making dresses a proper length again, so we wouldn't even have this dilemma Who wants to wear what are effectively thick tights in this weather?

I have large knees and find I have to wear my dresses shorter rather than longer - so that you can see my legs aren't that thick all the way up iykwim.

Shiney - when I say I have good legs, I guess they are closer to chunky but OK-ish middle aged legs than they are to supermodel legs.

I used to wear leggings with a waist length T-shirt. Luckily no photos of this era survive.

I'm size 8 and always wear above the knee with leggings in summer...my legs are slim but too ghostly white for general viewing Grin.

As long as any dress/tunic is mid thigh you'll be fine....unfortunately I saw far far too many "leggings as trousers" casualties in Manchester City Centre today...it actually makes me feel quite sick.

Do leggings have some special status I didn;t know about Confused Don;t you just do the same as you do with all your other clothes... try them on a decide if they look OK - if they do, wear them, if they don't - don't.

Wise words. Going to wear mine today, with long tunic.

PS - just come backl from Italy and was reading in a fashion mag (Grazia)there that leggings were 'only for students' - in fact, didn't see any mature women in them in the cities I was in, only very young girls. But, as in lots of areas, the 'rules' are different here - in fact, less restrictive, I'd say.

I live in leggings too I'm a size 10-12. I didnt think their was a certain 'size' you couldn't wear them at Confused I do agree about the bum covering thing though, mainly because alot of leggings become see through! I dont wear long tops with my jeggings.
