went to the salon yesterday to have an all over - semi i think. which they just applied to the roots. i usually use a box of loreal casting creme myself but thought would get it done properly. however this morning i can still see a few greys and the roots are def lighter than the rest of my hair. this is prob my fault as i have buggered up my hair through not using the salon all the time - but at £45 a go i cant really afford to. should i call them and let them know? dont feel it was really worth the money at all!

Yes, call them and complain and see if they can redo it for you ASAP. Dont put up with shoddy hair colouring from a salon, especially when it costs so much. I spend a fortune on salon colouring and am seriously thinking of going back to home dying. Good luck.

thank you, i felt quite nervous about phoning to tell them, but they have booked me in for next week to have a look (and hopefully sort it out). maybe its time for me to go for a permanent colour or think of highlights (im naturally very dark but dyed very very dark brown)?

definately complain as they should have made the right descision in the first place as to whether they should colour your hair when you have home dyed it.Take no rubbish from them whatsoever.
& mumelie I went back to doing it myself (or rather I get dh to do it),so much cheaper to hide the grey than spending a fortune at a salon.

I think you are right to raise it with them.

From their point of view (or yours for that matter) if you have been home colouring, and running the colour through, there might be some colour build-up, and it can actually be hard to get the same depth of colour just doing the roots in one go.

To do so, if you complain, they might just go darker and you might end up feeling "blocky" and "morticia" if they do this.

However they should have covered the grey with that colour - they should have "got them all"...

If you don't want to get too dark and don't want too much build up and keep going very dark then perhaps you should get your colour done at the salon, get some highlights (perhaps just a t-section) - to break up the roots a bit, then try and match your roots when they come in, which might be a slightly lighter overall colour, keep doing the roots only (no build-up, and highlights will stop you being tempted to run the colour through - you will need to get a tinting brush) - and just get your hightlights done twice, maybe 3 times a year at the hairdresser to stop yourself looking blocky. So you can manage your base tone and grey coverage yourself, but get the hairdresser to keep you looking "expensive", which highlights do (if done well)...
