Wedding in September

I really need some help with this! When would be a good time to start looking as September can still be quite warm. I have recently lost a lot of weight due to a serious illness (which is not over yet and probably won't be for ages). I am in my 50s, size 12 and 5ft 4 ins. I have pale auburn curly hair and very bad veins in my legs so I can't wear skirts unless they are just above the ankles.

As I have had such an awful year with my illness, I really need cheering up with a nice outfit. Added into the mix is that I'm not very well off, although I could afford up to £150 to £200 at a pinch. The wedding is for my DN and my DSis will be dressed up to the nines! Bit of competition there! She is also extremely rich :) So I really don't want to look like the poor and ill relation.

Looking forward to seeing my DN who will look beautiful :)

The bit about the bad veins struck a chord - my dm was in a similar predicament - needed something longish to cover. After a lot of searching, she found Jacques Vert. Don't know how much she paid, but she looked fantastic - might be worth a look?

This is on budget, on trend and in size 12 - use the bright jacket as your key piece and lead colour, good tailored trousers and cheaper accessories...

No one would know the whole lot cost around £130!

bright blue jacket, on trend and a bargain

cream trousers

bright blue courts

bright blue bag

no advice on the fashion front - but my MIL has been using a self-tanning cream on her legs and her veins are hardly noticeable now...might be worth a try....

tethers great minds and all that.....Grin The cream jumpsuit with that gold sequin jacket & shoes makes me swoon - if only I had a wedding to go to....

Wow! Have been off-line for a while and brilliant people have left me loads of links to go through. Will have a look and get back to you.

I can't just colour over the veins as they are all bumpy too. Even look horrible with support tights and they also make me look like an old lady and I'm not - honest!

Love the sequinned jacket so far. Not sure about the trousers as I also suffer from short legs. Also have issues with shoes as I have very wide feet. Altogether a physical disaster area me!

The cream jumpsuit is lovely, but I'm not sure if I dare wear it. All that hassle to go to the loo....

... oh, I am sounding really old now!

Well, I got the jacket and jumpsuit and they really weren't for me at all. Loved the idea, but looked silly in them. I hate to ask again (but will try as I'm so worried about finding the right outfit for this wedding - chronic illness issues), can anyone give me any more ideas, please?

Oh i don't want t leave you unanswered so can bump up for you, but don't think I can be of any real help as I never have much of a clue for myself either.

Regarding the veins, is there anyway you could wear the really thick black opaque tights that M&S do? I had some last winter, They were like three million denier or similar Wink. They would surely cover veins (I do sympathise as my mother had really bad varicose veins) but she would have been happy with thick opaque such as these.

I know they would not the be the best as, like you say, usually still very warm for a September wedding, however they would then open you up to possibility of dresses or skirts?

Hope your health improves soon too. Chronic illness is such a bitch, I speak from experience. Stress won't help, how about a personal shopper?

What about a maxi dress? this is a petite and could look beautiful for an Indian Summer wedding?

Report
NotQuiteSoDesperate · 23/07/2011 18:49

Thanks, both of you. Yes, I could try tights - am so nervous about showing my legs. But then, I have also lost tons of weight and at least I am slimmer now. The maxi dress is lovely, but as I remember wearing maxis in the 70s, I'm not sure how it would look at 54!
