why is it such a wonder beauty buy? What, other than as a lip balm, do you actually use it for?

If my lips are chapped to hell, it's the only thing I've ever found which I can slather on at night and they'll be back to normal by morning. Love the stuff. Also use it for little patches of dry skin on my face in winter.

Great for lips, hands, feet, elbows, and keeping my eyebrows neat. Also a little smudge under my nose stops it getting sore/traps pollen in hayfever season.

I love the smell, and the tube lasts for ages.

It smells BE-YOOTIFUL! You lot are mad! I do only use it as lip balm though, I can't imagine rubbing it on my face! Aparently it was developed for some posh bird to use on her horses hooves!! The body mosturiser and hand creams are also great and have the same smell.

It's great to have around. I scalded my hand making tea at work, it was great for that, I kept putting it on all day and it really helped. My children get really sore lips in winter, and it's the ONLY thing that sorts it out, also it protects against freezing wind. It's amazing for nappy rash. It tames eyebrows, hair, etc. It lasts for years.

I hate it- smells like TCP or some other antiseptic.

It is so sticky- anything that touches it sticks

The only thing i can stand is the 8 hr handcream which is nice but still has the medicinal smell.

It is amazing stuff - I use it on wind-burned lips, eczema and dry patches. It is really lovely and thick.

I always have a tube in - lasts ages. I use for lips, dry skin, burns, after waxing and sometimes slather over my face as a face mask when I look knackered.

I love it esp the smell! I use it as lip balm eyebrow smoother and now and again I warm it in my hands and go to sleep with a thickish layer on my face and take any left off with a hot flannel in the morning it is like a lazy persons facial. Great on hands too

I use The Un-Petrolem Jelly instead. It's far, far better and doesn't reek like that stuff.

I got the last tube from the US but otherwise I get it online.

I've had to use stuff like this for years now because DD1 has really sensitive skin and is allergic to a lot of stuff.

It does a lot more than Vaseline. It has ingredients in it which heal the skin rather than just emoliate it. A friend of mine fell off his bicycle and gave himself really bad gravel rash/grazing. His wife made him put 8 hr cream on it daily and it healed really fast and didn't leave a trace of a scar. I have also used it on people with really bad sunburn to good effect. One of my friends says it gets rid of her spots too.

It was formulated to heal racehorses' legs when they got chaffed from running! I'm not sure you could get that sort of result with Vaseline.

The smell is certainly an acquired taste, I'll give you that. But as others have said, it's the only thing that sorts out really chapped lips and skin for me.

I know the price isn't cheap to begin with but I use it daily on myself and also on nearly every one of my clients and I have still only got through 3 tubes in about 10 years so it's not really that expensive if you think about it. If you get through it faster than that, it only goes to show how bloody useful it is!

Yes, it's prime ingredient is Petrolium, like Vaseline, but that doesn't mean it's the same. This is the same nonsense assumed by those who say that Creme De La Mer is the same as Nivea because it's prime ingredient it the same. It's the additional ingredients which have had a lot of research put into them that make the products what they are rather than just the cheap basic carrier ingredient.

Alba Un-Petroleum Jelly. Bio Oil. Burt's Bee's Miracle Salve.

Lots of good products out there that don't pong like that stuff.

I love the smell of it. The 8 hour and cream is great too, really moisturising.

Yep, there are lots of products that do similar stuff but it's subjective. I bought a bottle of Bio Oil, cost me £8 or so, no good for chapped lips, bottle lasted about 1/4 the time of a tube of 8 Hour Cream. If it was any good for chapped lips, it tastes much more vile than 8 Hour Cream!

Anyway, like I said, it is subjective. It isn't, however, a "beauty myth".

I bought Lucas Paw Paw Ointment a while back which does a lot of the same things too. Everyone in my industry raves about it. It's pretty good but it doesn't do half the good 8 Hour Cream does for my lips, it's too thin. Different strokes for different folks.

I found it useless, but I really like the eight hour cream facial sunscreen. It has a very strong, weirdly medicinal smell, but it is the only facial sunscreen I have found that is high factor (50) and easily absorbed (although it appears white and chalky at first, it doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy and sticky).

I should say, nothing works better for my lips than that rose lip salve you get from the chemist

I love it. Twice a week I put it on my face for the night- it makes your skin sooo soft. Great if you have dry/cracked skin on your hands. It's used by all the make-up artists as well for chapped lips.

if you are a fan of the Elizabeth arden cream, it was recently on offer in argos in the uk at about 11/12 pounds for a tube, don;t know if the offer is still running, but worth keeping your eyes on sales in argos.
