Am going to pinch all the ideas for make-your-own for DD's 12th birthday coming up soon - 15 girls and her brother (unless we can farm him out) - will be here for at least an hour and a half after bowling, so we could do with something to fill in time!

That was their last weeks DT lesson - decorating cupcakes DD has been able to do that since she was 2, so not worried that she missed it to play in a rounders match! It's even worse than my first DT lesson - making blancmange from a packet

Aha, you are here! Good, although during the time it took to find the new thread, I had forgotten the pithy remarks I had ready about square pizzas and looking like a stroke victim when you lie on your side. I have to say, the stroke thing made me snort in an un PC way, mainly because dh and I both fell asleep in front of the tv last night, so our 28 yr old lodger was treated to the sight of us open-mouthed, snoring lightly, and drooling heavily. I don't think she wants to live here any more.

Today I have to place an online bulk order for my hair dye (Nice & Easy Natural Goldern Auburn, if you're interested). Tomorrow, I have a date with my epilator to attack my hairy chops. What larks!

Dd has graduated onto making macaroni cheese and spag bol. V. useful, as I don't have to cook on days when she has Food Tech now. :)

I am also psyching myself up for dd's birthday celebrations in two weeks, however she is being her usual unhelpful self and not telling me want she wants. I am apparently supposed to guess - fine, but if I get it wrong there will be a massive gloom. Hmm, what can I do for a girly 13th b-day that will not involve enormous expense? I am usually quite creative with my ideas but I am drawing a blank at the moment.

In my school DS (as it was known then) was so pathetic that I made scones every week for a term. We decorated a shop bought swiss roll as a Yule log Prior to that I had been in an army school where the ingredients were subsidised - made fruit salad, proper steak and kidney pud, gooseberry fool, all sorts. Only problem was hour bus ride home - if it was edible it was eaten.....

Our cookery teacher insisted on calling it "Home Economics", although it said Domestic Science on all the textbooks. I don't think we ever made anything very useful. My main memory is of the day my best friend's parkin exploded. That was a good lesson.

None of DD's food tech food has actually made it home yet!

Strop, has she said she wants it at home? How many of them? Would they enjoy a "cinema-style" party with the curtains shut, popcorn, hot-dogs, etc?

Our DS teachers were as old as the hills and still stuck in war-time Britain even though it was the 70's. One used to pronounce margarine as margg-a-reen as if it was some new-fangled fancy food!

I used to have a great laugh in O'level cookery with my friend who always had mishaps. It was my hardest O'level though!

Re: the jowls thing - never mind lying on my side, I am beginning to feel that if I turn my head too quickly to one side my jowls can't keep up. I am like the dog in Tom and Jerry.

bigTilly, she has not said ANYTHING, despite extensive questioning. Only the occasional helpful little comment such as "There's no point in me telling you because we can't do it anyway". Aaaargh.

We cooked really revolting things in cookery (Home Economics my arse) - things I have never attempted since. We did yeast cookery - hot cross buns, which were like bricks as we didn't have time for the buns to rise. Some little cheese puff things which were deep fried and had to be eaten hot. An orange drink. Cheese and potato pie (mash and cheese). Apple suet pudding (grey, with raw apple inside). Apple snow - stewed apple with meringue on top. I had to cycle two miles home over rough ground and all of the snow had fallen off by the time I got it home.

I wasn't allowed to do O level as I was too bad. Ditto embroidery, dressmaking, art, pottery and woodwork. So I used to have Friday afternoon off until someone noticed and I did Spanish instead.

I hated sewing, art, pottery etc. I wanted to do technical drawing or motor mechanics....God school was so sexist.

I do not feel I missed out on not doing O level cookery . Am really quite a good cook now although mainly of the sort of Forrin Food you didn't get in 1970s Norwich. And I am pmsl at the fact that your cooking was rejected, MrsS.

bigT, I do actually like baking but it seems such a waste for eight year old ingrates. V tempting to get a pack of cheap cupcakes for a quid, frankly, and that would be cheaper than making them. Dd2 has however requested brownies instead of cake - do you think she's been reading Nigella? - which is completely marvellous in every possible way. Including the fact I can use the cut-glass cakestand I got in the local charity chop and DP absolutely loathes .

Wilbur, I found the Nice'n'Easy didn't stay on v well. Although I appear to have done a right bodge job with the John Frieda alternative, not helped by the fact that I then had my hair cut short.

I'd go down the cinema route for the 13 year old.

Yes, for some reason (probably to do with not much time or energy - or cash - for Actual Shopping) we are all mad enthusiasts for Sainsbury's.

Not for jeans, though. I was there today and there was nothing between ultra-skinny jeggings types and uber-frumpsom high-waisted medium-wash nightmares. Did get a new pair of converse-a-likes, however.

Good dresses, though!

A measure of my life's dullness is the fact I find a good browse round our local huge Sainsbury's the highlight of my fortnight.

But I have a few Asda things Actually several people have commented on how nice a pair of my jeans are. I don't tell them where I got them
