What can fat people wear when it is hot?

Planning ahead to forthcoming holiday at the end of july somewhere nice and hot.

Obviously I can't wear shorts <<shudder>> but I have gone right off the 3/4 length linen trews I've been wearing for yonks. I rather like palazzo types but would it not be a bit hot having all my legs covered up?
WHat do you think?

LaurieFairyCake Sat 11-Jun-11 10:24:55

Very thin dresses, non clingy - with those thin shorts/spanx type cotton underneath to stop chafing? I have 2 for £22 from qvc, they are that crushed cheesecloth look that needs no ironing.

I'm also wearing tunics and 3 quarter leggings- just covering knee. Next online have them for £7 - size down.

Where do you get those 'thin shorts/ spanx type' things??

As well as dresses, I wear cut-offs and long tops/ tunics a lot. Have some Boden capris for this year.

Sorry, when I say cut-off, I don't mean shorts! I really mean cropped trousers or jeans - and not in linen.

LaurieFairyCake Sat 11-Jun-11 12:13:11

something like these

Get thee down to Evans. They have some gorgeous stuff in there atm.

polyhymnia Sat 11-Jun-11 12:27:00

See what you mean, laurie. look a bit too uncomfortable for holidays for me! Also, predictably, sold out in larger sizes, I see.

Not an Evans fan myself, but I do have some stripy T-shirts from Style 369, which is Evans-owned.

Floaty maxi dresses? Loads in various sales atm.

msbunbury Sat 11-Jun-11 14:00:47

Long skirts - they float around and often create a nice breeze - plus you can hitch them up.

FriedaRoam Sat 11-Jun-11 14:07:57

I am a firm believer in wear what you like and am ANTI this fashion for female corsertry - that thigh thing will COOK you if its hot.
either
a) just let it all hang out

b) stop eating so much

Thats what id do.

moondog Sat 11-Jun-11 14:34:43

Anything would be better for a fat (or thin) bird than 3/4 length trews.

wineisfine Sat 11-Jun-11 15:18:11

Chafing can be a serious, holiday-destroying issue. I remember crying with pain during a holiday to rome - I was a size 14 but have always been hefty of thigh, whatever my size (have been a size 20 and a size 10 and all points in-between).

I wore full-length 100% cotton trousers all the time in Thailand - these ones - they only go up to a 16 but something like that (inc palazzos, depending on fabric), would be fine I think. So long as you can get air circulating I think it's fine, and saves me from mozzy bites.

AtYourCervix depends on your shape, where do you carry your weight, what height are you, what are your best assets....

Friedaroam, not the most helpful post....confused

AtYourCervix Sat 11-Jun-11 16:12:29

i'm fat all over. chafing is a problem with skirts/dresses. i have a couple of nice cotten maxi length frocks and have just bought some leggings in tesco. don't know if i'll ever have the nerve to wear them though. might get some long skirts and hitch them up to soak up the sun.

belgo Sat 11-Jun-11 16:15:28

Long well cut skirts with a fitted top look better then maxi dresses, which make even thin people look fat.

Wear the cycling shorts things that Laurifairycake has linked to, to stop chaffing.

madammecholet Sat 11-Jun-11 16:46:19

agree with belgo, maxi's can make it look like you're wearing a tent tbh. Try the leggings with a shorter dress than you would normally wear, knee length.. or with a long tunic.

Maxi skirts are everywhere this season too - go for fitted ones rather than tents though to elongate your shape rather than box it in..

PLUS you didn't tell me what you're best assets werehmm..and you DO ahve them, play to them, ie if you have great boobs, get them out, if you have great arms, ankles,waist.......get them out....

AtYourCervix Sat 11-Jun-11 16:56:55

hmmm. assets. um. well....... um.. er... hmmmmmm.......

I actually thought Frieda's post was helpful. After all, there comes a point when it's so hot that anything you wear that keeps you cool goes. It's very disheartening to be constantly told you can't wear this and you can't wear that when you know damn well that the forbidden items are the only thing you can wear without passing out in the heat.

So less of the 'you'll look shit in this' and more suggestions of where to get nice things (which I know you are doing anyway) is the way to go. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that having bingo wings or fat calves won't actually cause other people to drop down stone dead if they catch a glimpse of them..

FriedaRoam Sat 11-Jun-11 17:25:43

i have glam mate who is easily a 24. she wears long trousers and t shirts/ she doesnt like dreses but hey you like them then wear them

BUt the day i had to buy underwear to stop my limbs rubbing together if due to weight i would have a LONG hard chat with myself. Its really nuts.

FriedaRoam Sat 11-Jun-11 17:27:11

think colour and weave of fabric can make all the diff.
also there isnt just one " fat " shape is there - some people carry weight in diffo areas
i htink accessories adn colours are the way to go.

FriedaRoam Sat 11-Jun-11 17:29:11

op why cant you wear shorts? are your legs bad? are they in proportion?

madammecholet Sat 11-Jun-11 17:29:51

gwendolineMaryLacey I think offering advice on what to wear is slightly more productive than 'stop eating so much' and 'have a LONG hard chat with myself'....which the OP can do if she wants to take that 'advice', but that does NOT solve her issue today, or tomorrow or next week.

If she wanted advice on her weight I think she may have asked for it, yet she asked what she could wear??

I do agree we should all be less self bleedin concious and go with what makes us feel good and confident...

FriedaRoam Sat 11-Jun-11 17:31:20

but for a lot of us NOT fittin ginto something or when your size impinges on your lifestyle is THE moment when you think - hey im cutting back.
could lose a stone in a month!

madammecholet Sat 11-Jun-11 17:34:00

She never mentioned her clothes didn't fit....maybe she likes the way she is?

fluffles Sat 11-Jun-11 17:34:51

those cycling shorts thingies are not hot, i am a size 12 but have big muscly cycling thighs AND am a bit fat on top so i chaff in skirts.

i wear cycling or running shorts with built in gusset instead of knickers underneath skirts in summer and it is comfy and not hot - in fact, cause you're not sticking to plastic chairs etc, it feels less hot than bare legs.
