Red Polka Dot Dress - What do I wear with it?

Bestb411pm · 04/06/2011 12:02

Help!!

I've finally decided on a dress to wear to a wedding next month but I've got no idea what to wear with it jewellery/shoes/hair wise.

Anyone fancy helping me out? I'm not big on spending loads, but I can usually find a close match on ebay.

Is it 50s style? I think Mary Jane pumps look brilliant with polka dots - and deffo for a wedding. If you don't want to wear huge heels, I love these: www.office.co.uk/womens/office/hiccup_bar_shoe/33/9919/26044/1?fs=9919

I'd carry a clutch for a wedding.

If you have a pic of the dress I can suggest some accessories (I'm eBay's resident fashion blogger and author of //www.fashiondetective.co.uk - so allegedly I know what I'm on about :)).

x

JO STOP TOUTING YOUR BLOG

Report

I've only joined because most of my traffic is coming from mumsnet (a few people have recommended my blog - how very DARE they) - I didn't even know there was a style section on here.

I've always been terrified to post here (my son is seven) because it has such a reputation for being unfriendly - hmmm, an hour in and been told off IN CAPS already. That'll learn me.

If helping people with style stuff for free doesn't warrant a mention of my blog (which is totally independent) I shall piss off back to friendlier forums Wink

jo carry on lol its not at all unfriendly. Just friendly banter really Smile

no-one minds people recommending other people's blogs.

But I'm SCARED! You hear a lot of scary things about mumsnet. Maybe an hour before being told off is good going...?

I just love talking about fashion (and v lucky to do that for a living) and I'm a mum. I would love to pop along here now and again if I can be of any help, but capital letters on a Saturday when I could be in the park with my boy ... not really feeling that!

I'll check out the rules on mentioning blogs, anyway...

Report
SybilBeddows · 04/06/2011 13:41

well, if you are that upset by a few capital letters you probably won't enjoy it much on here Smile

JoPayton · 04/06/2011 13:43

Ha - I wouldn't say upset, I'd say unsurprised!

It's made my DH laugh into his lunch, anyway.

Blog mentions are fine imo (and loads of people do it!).

And I love those shoes on your blog, Jo Grin

Take no heed.

JoPayton · 04/06/2011 13:49

Tee-hee.

I am obsessed with those shoes, Lizzy - but I could take El on holiday for the same money. Being a mum and having a shoe fetish is a tough call :)

Soz for hogging the thread with my "naughtiness" (?) Bestb411pm - offer still stands if you have a pic of the dress x

Carry On Jo. Loads of blog mentions on here, although probably more mentions of Twitter .

Perhaps Most Beautiful doesn't fancy the competition? Wink

Grin MissBee

Jo, I'd kill myself in those shoes, I am clumsy, sturdy and tall with a tendency to fall over even before I have a glass of wine. But they are sooo pretty.

And yes, Op, show us the dress.

Thanks, MissB - don't tell me mumsnet is competitive too!? Shock

I figured that if people are asking for fashion advice online they would want to know that the person who is dishing out the tips can at least dress themselves (again, allegedly) and has a little bit of fash knowledge. I certainly would!

Lizzy - you know you can get those Manolos with a kitten heel...jus' sayin' Grin

well no. people can just judge the advice for themesleves. If everyone did that it would get dull; say you gave legal advice and put your degree down every time!
Or "i liek fairy liquid best and I wash up 20 times a day so i know!

why not just have it in your profile rather than every single post?

TheMostBeautifulPoster · 04/06/2011 13:58

and if the blog is a business venture then you DO need to pay to advertise.

cookielove · 04/06/2011 14:00

Jo- Those shoes are gorgeous but alas i cannot wear high heels, and i can be safe in the knowledge that they pale pink would not suit me. I love love the vintage wedding dresses in your blog (bride to be is me)

Bestb411pm - can you link to the dress? can you wear heels or do you prefer flats? how do you feel about your arms?

Report
JoPayton · 04/06/2011 14:03

Nope the blog is not a business venture, my dear. No advertising on there and I have refused every offer. It's supposed to be a funny look at fashion and I LOVE writing it and have great feedback from the people (many of them mums) who read regularly.

I have only just joined so haven't done my profile yet.

I think using fairy liquid is a bit different than advising someone on what to wear - but it depends if you are just being polite, or actually trying to help someone choose real accessories to wear with their outfit. Plus, OP mentioned eBay and I'm on there every day for work, scouring new items, so I might be able to help with something specific. But if the help's not welcome, I won't stick around. Just testing the water here, really.

Cookie - when's the big day??? Candy Anthony seem to have some of the bestest vintage dresses around.

I am now dying to see BestB4's dress!

i'm sure your blog's great and anyone willing to impart knowledge on here is always welcome. but mentioning your blog in lots of posts is not really done, that's all

WillieWaggledagger · 04/06/2011 14:27

op - do you have a link to the dress or one similar?

The trick is to do it more subtly by giving someone some great advice and linking to your blog in the process, then people would have gone 'Is that really your blog, wow!' rather than announcing 'I am an expert and here is my blog'. Smile
