Benefit do some Stay Don't Stray stuff that's brill and sticks it on, covers fine veins and blotchy marks etc. You put it on first.

And by some decent quality eye shadow if you don't already. I use Dior, it lasts FOREVER and never leaks, and never runs, and never flakes off, and never goes on patchy. Well worth the expense.

The Urban Decay eye primer is excellent. About £12 from Boots or Debenhams.
Eye shadow goes on smoothly and lasts all day. A little goes a long way.
I heard about it on MN.

If you dont have much money (like me) you can "prime" your eyelids with some face powder then put the eyeshadow on top.

I do this, it makes the eyelids sort of dry and even iykwim and Ive never had any smudging problems.

What others have said. Also, always have powder shadow. The pigmentation in more expensive shadows is better too.

Disasterpiece makes a good point. The first thing I would ask is do you wear foundation and powder under your eyeshadow? If not, or if only one of the two that would be the reason your eyeshadow goes on patchy. It will be sticking to your moisturiser/natural oils/foundation.

The only time it is beneficial not to powder your lids first is when using a primer, of course. I recommend Urban Decay's Primer Potion. It seems to be a favorite amongst most make up artists I know.
