Blonde home dye - my roots are a bit ginger.

Attempting credit crunch blonde here, the hair itself looks great although i wouldn't mind a bit blonder but the roots are slightly orangey.

So in my wisdom i've bought a more blonde bleaching kit to do the whole lot again.
Haven't used it yet.

I'm not precious about my hair though so will chop it all off if it turns out badly.

What do i do now?

as far as i am aware the hair goes through a 'red' shade before it finally turns blonde - do you think you may have taken it off too soon as the ends will have had longer than the roots and when you checked before rinsing off did you check the roots or the ends

Have never attempted blonde hair at home but I'd say - Give it a bash... if it goes wrong just go to a light brown (red first though or it won't stick!) and lighten gradually.

Plenty of conditioner as well. Worst comes to worst you'll have to send DP out for an emergency brown hairdye!

I left it on for 55 minutes but the instructions kept repeating 'do not leave on for longer than 45 minutes'. So i was worried about that.
It may have gone blonder if i'd left it on longer i suppose.
I'm going to do it again concentrating on the roots more.
I think the rest of the hair has worked so well because of the highlights already on my hair

I don't think the 10 mins is anything to worry about unless your head starts burning and your hair is falling off in clumps ;)

If you have highlights already they are pre-conditioned to work well. But now that your roots are lighter you might find that 2nd time is the charm

The hair goes through several phases when lightening and if it is yellow the colour/bleach hasn't had long enough to develop properly. The shop bought colours are notorius for going brassy as they tell you to wash off too early or don't have strong enough developer.

If you are redoing it with bleach again, ONLY do the roots (or what is yellow) as you will fry the ends of your hair !!

The best bet is to buy the trade bleach and peroxide off ebay from one of the salon supplies shops on there. It is a bit more than a shop bought kit, but you will have several applications and the quality is a lot better.

I use majiblond 901s to get my hair to an amazing 'white blonde' without the bleach. I use 12% peroxide and every so often I use a wella toner sachet in lightest ash blonde after colouring to neutralise and brassy tones (about 99p from all supermarkets and high street shops).

Oh, and just incase you decide to go darker at any point make sure you add gold/red tones or else your hair will go green lol !!

How was your hair lightened before? With highlights or a high lift tint?

You have "root glow" basically because your roots have not lifted up to the required shade. Bear in mind they may not no matter how long you leave it on, unless you are using bleach.

It might be that you need to "pre lighten" before you use your "blond" colour. This will solve the problem of the gold roots.

Sometimes you find a tone with a bit more "ash" in it will bring you up there or nearly but the ash will kill the gold.

Careful about scalp bleaching at home. Fine if you solve the problem with it once this time but if you are going to continue doing it, its very hard to know which bit has been done and which hasn't in terms of retouching up your roots, particularly at the back, in the future. So really ideally you need to find your ideal base colour that you can do at home as a high lift tint.

I used to home dye my hair blond - bout 20 years ago. It was always a gingery colour for the 1st week or so - then went to a nice shade for 3 weeks or so - before the dark roots appeared.

I used to use 'Touch of Silver' mousse - don't know if you can still get it. It's a purply colour mousse - but takes outs the brass.

I used to work for Sally services - hence why I know about hair and beauty lol !! They will be more than happy to help and will know what they are talking about.

Just remember to condition, condition, condition when going lighter !!

my hair was highlighted but with about 3/4 of an inch of roots which are a brown colour.

i used a loreal preference colour kit in lightest natural blonde.

to fix it i've bought loreal perfect blonde creme which has a lightening powder, prelightening cream and developer cream.

You won't get an even blonde by using the l'oreal perfect blond creme on its own. It is a lightener and will strip the colour from your hair and probably go a much lighter yellow.

Your best bet is to do nothing now...go to Sally's and show them your hair and ask them what they recommend as it is impossible to give you advice without seeing the tones it is right now and also the condition of your hair.

My hair is in lovely condition, infact having it coloured lighter helps with my greasy tendencies (as do ceramic straighteners). My hair seems to put up with colour well and has never been dry or broken.

I've been out and bought a second natural blonde and DH has put it on my roots. Will leave it for a bit then do the ends to blend in.

the orangeyness seems worse in some lights. it's perhaps not as bad as it first seemed, but still worth correcting i think.

The lightener would have been better used BEFORE the natural blonde as it would have stripped the orange away and then the natural blonde would have deposited colour into the hair.

Give it a good intensive condition tonight, and then tomorrow think about correcting as above.

I recently decided to try a nice chestnut colour but it really doesn't suit me, so am going back to my trusted blonde next week... I will more than likely have a hair disaster myself as its a very red based brown I have on right now !!!

NO don't bleach again your hair will snap. Instead use a cool toner like ash blond to remove the red. Put it on the roots first but don't leave it to long your hair will go green or purple.

ok, so it's worse and you were right.

i'll do the lightener then the colour.

do i wash and dry it after putting the lightener on, before adding the colour? or is there a quicker way?

all better now. the lightener fixed some of the orange but my hair looked like a barbie doll wil orange highlight.
so out came the trusty chestnut brown, i left it on for ages and now i'm back to my old natural colour.
i hate to admit it, but it looks better than blonde anyway.

Hi I have just used a garnier blonde on my already white blonde hair to get a darker blonde colour the rest of my hair has went a nice colour but roots are gingery any ideas what I could use to get them blonder ? Thanks louise X
