MsLatte’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #16): Serving up guaranteed corona-free escapism throughout lockdown to lurkers, passers-by and regulars.(742 Posts)
A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking, but we don’t promote them.
We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when. The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.
Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. Quite a few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.
We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/ML is too dense to realise the 2ML/2FL is better)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed
We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY), Kim Jae Wook (KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.
If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…
Cheers boatyard! 👏👏
I was just checking through the list and realised that not only is it categorised but it is in alphabetical order 🤦🏻♀️
Ooooh It’s Okay To Not Be Okay is going to be on Netflix hurrah! (I just need to get over my pedant's urge to correct the split infinitive...)
With lovely Kim Soo Hyun & Seo Ye Ji (she was great in Save Me )

Of course it is! This is no shabby shambles of a thread, you know. Let’s face it, if we can’t get the OP ship shape after 15 iterations, we’re in trouble.
omg I've just gotten the most giantest, insanest work project and it's got to be done in 9 working days.
I'm spose I'm going to have learn Korean for real so I can listen to my dramas while I code. I cannot do kdrama and math at the same time because I can't read two things at once. Though it's possible this code would fall in love with a mermaid and begin a quest to avenge its father instead of the boring things it is supposed to do...
Lying on my sofa with an enormous tumbler of wine feeling very sorry for myself in front of Revolutionary Love right now. Pity me!
Oh no Jokolo that sounds pants!
The high up bosses at work want to implement a new IT system at work soon. We tried it 6 months ago and it was a nightmare and we had to switch it off! Now they want to try it again 😭😭😭.
As a top flight IT professional I advise you never to implement a new IT system.
I’m monitoring a process at work for the next few hours. It seems to be going OK, so I’ve poured a large G&T and set my timer to remind me periodically to check it’s still running OK. I quite like working from home. I’m not being silly, but no one can tell on Zoom whether you have water in your glass or neat vodka. The possibilities are endless. We have one very dry senior management meeting each week where the host disables participants’ cameras & microphones. I’m going to start doing yoga stretches as barely moving from my desk is crap for my posture.
I should have said that I’m monitoring it remotely - I haven’t pitched up at the office with a flask of hooch. 🤣

Pls can I give you my bosses phone number jokolo 😅
😂😂 I suppose I should be grateful that all my projects are on hold since the reps can't be on site yet, but I know that the domino effect is going to be me being stupidly busy towards the end of the year and trying to finish for the tax deadline... Nursing is so much simpler lol
My sister had me in stitches telling me about a Zoom meeting she had. She has building maintenance currently maintaining the outside of her apartment block and she had to ask them really nicely to keep it down for a couple of hours during a really important exam board meeting. They kindly obliged but she ended up not being able to hear a thing because during the course of the call an ambulance, police car and fire engine all went past with sirens blaring 😂😂😂 She felt so bad for the maintenance guys that she went and bought them huge bottles of water and other drinks because they had really done their best to be quiet.
The 2ML in The Time I’ve Loved You is just so effing annoying and unlovely I have no idea why the FL likes him so much. Yes, he’s super tall but that is not enough (seriously, you all know how much it pains me to say that). If I was ML, I would have taken it as a sign that FL is an utter numpty and binned her off, as a friend as well as a potential mate. It’s mystifying.
You're saying selecting life partners purely on height is not a reliable system? 😂
Gosh, I may have some rethinking to do.
...But the suit based system is still fine, right?
And obviously if we met as children and then forgot, or on the astral plane, or in our past life.
Those are all still fine.
God, I loathe the 2ML. You can tell FL is pulling away with every fibre of her being - her body language just screams “get me out of here”, and still he persists. He’s as thick as mince and she needs to get over her female socialisation, stop being so nice and tell him to do one.
Suits, height and laugh me in to bed - I think that just about covers it. Housework aptitude & willing guarantees a happy ever after.
monkeywench your sister sounds lovely, good luck to her!
boaty even though the 2ML is the tall bloke from Pinocchio, The Rebel & Doctors I’m afraid he is somehow never quite good enough 🤷🏻♀️ I’m advising you to skip ( I’ve had lashings of wine tonight and am feeling quite bold 😆)
jokolo have you name changed again or have I had too much rosé?
Based on the fact that I'm 5 ft 2 and 1/2, I have no choice but to go taller than average in order for my offspring to reach average height. At least that's the reason that DS came up with for the more than 1ft difference in height between me and DH 😂😂 DS is over 6ft as well and DD is now my height at 13 and still stretching. I'm resigned to lugging a step around the house and being patted on the head in a patronising manner🤔😤
In my mind’s eye, you are now a pocket-sized kdrama FL now monkey, but in the Strong Girl Bong Soon groove - small, but fierce and effective. 😄
My parents had a similar height difference. I take after my Dad, sadly by being very undainty and having to buy mens’ gloves etc.
Short but not at all dainty lol If I don't start shifting this lockdown poundage I'll be more Jabba the Hutt than BongBong 😂😂
I’m just about keeping the lockdown pounds at bay with a vigorous walk every day and a bit more housework than usual. If I could lay off the gin & red wine and biscuits, I’d probably be losing weight. Being away form the office cake corner is helpful.
Tall is always a requirement for me. I'm always googling "how tall is......" and DH is always amazed at my ability to say whether someone on TV is tall or not, without being able to see their whole body. Skillz.
I watched the first two episodes of Revolutionary Love last night. It was fun, but prefer Siwon in not gurning mode, so not sure if he will get a bit annoying.
Im still watching Entourage too. I love the bits with them all together but SKJ's character is a bit whiny and selfish. I feel for his manager/friend 😅
