Problems with DSC'shousing. WWYD?

Name-changed because this is extremely outing. Two DSCs, 12 and 6. Mum has primary care, we have them EO weekend, half terms, half of summer holiday, bank holidays. Relationship between both sets of parents is fine, we muddle along reasonably well but I don't think we'd go out of our way to be friends iyswim. Mum and husband had notice given to them a few months ago on their rented house, as landlord was selling. We were not given updates on anything to do with the move until the weekend of the move, when we had the children. Come the Monday, we got the new address, were told it was temporary and then subsequently found out (via Google) that they are in a council B&B. No news on when they might get a house. The B&B they are in is a stone's throw from our house. All four of them are in one room. We are shocked about this and don't understand how it could have happened. Husband doesn't work but mum does, full time in low-paid job. DH pays way over the odds on CS. Guideline is mid-three figures, he pays just about four figures a month. Presumably they also get working tax credits and child tax credits. We have offered to take the children until they have found a permanent home but have been rebuffed. Solicitor says there is nothing we can do apart from go to the courts but that will cause untold damage to the relationship between us all. The money DH pays is supposed to help put a roof over their heads and he wants to ask mum where it's going, but apparently we have no right to ask this. Older DSC seems to be ok, taking it all in their stride. Younger one not so much, unsettled and played up a lot this weekend. Usually very placid. Could be entirely unconnected of course. DH and I are worried sick and can't understand why mum would rather have them in one room in a B&B (with god knows who else living there) when they have their own rooms with us. Does anyone have any experience of this? Is there anything we can do short of going to court?
