when does an exercise class become a clique?

Odd one. I go to loads of classes and often chat with other participants and the insructor, say hello to newbies etc.
went to one recently though I didnt go to and it was clear they were all friends - fine and it was one of their birthdays...

HOWEVER after singign happy birthday to them and every song being chosen for them and them hamming it up at the front, I started thinking ok ENOUGH already.
then I felt mean

Plus the instructor was laying it on thick for this bloody birthday..

then they all sing shout in a blokey way to one song..
