Resuming domestique duties Smile...we've raced away from the broom wagon that is a miserable winter and the dudes are up and racing on the Continent.

Milan-San Remo is first up with Cav looking to get his first race win of the season and with Petacchi and Renshawe in his lead out train (and one climb removed for safety reasons) this is where he could do it. It's live on Eurosport with highlights on Euro and Sky.

There are six other one-day classics before the Irish Giro in May, so rather than doing all the research, I'd commissioned the Beeb to do it for me!
So here is a nifty guide to all of them in one easy go

The Irish Giro may get a bit of pure local interest traffic, so I'd started a new thread just for that celebration of all that is green, lycra and on two thin wheels, here...The Irish Giro

Signing in here.

So we're back on the bone-rattling cobbles for the Spring Classics.

A bit more speculation re the race Who might win?

Cav was visited by partner and toddling daughter as a surprise before the race..."Awwwwww"...

Morning DA!

Looks like Wiggo is aiming sharply for TdF prep by stepping out of the Tour de Catalonia to focus on hill climbing training....here is Wiggo or Froome going to be Sky leader for Le Tour?

Jeeez. Grin

Oh and it's raining, and cold. Not good for the sprinters.

I do NOT like that wet tarmac at the end.

It all looks awesome on my new shiny HD TV though. Because of the overall interest in cycling now and the lovely G being a contender S4C covered Paris-Nice, I cannot say how bizarre the commentary sounded in Welsh Grin.

Did you see Cancellara's comments on the Paris-Roubaix and Wiggo? I initially looked at the article for the lovely pictures but actually the words were quite good too Grin. Do you think Cancellara is scared?

Confident, I'd say......

noticed the advert for the Pinarello bike, that Sky use - £7,500 at discount.

Someone has a rear mudguard! Just need a basket on the front.....

Love seeing Welsh tv, and you learn there is no translation for some things, or they don't bother. "dirty weekend" dropped into a rapid exchange in Welsh raises an eyebrow amongst the non Welsh speakers.

I know I remember hearing my H on the phone to his mum when I first met him burbling on in an alien tongue then the words 'magic carpet' and then on with the burbling Grin. Conversley there are some Welsh words it would take a paragraph of english to even start to convey the meaning. It's a very weird language. My sons are all equally fluent in both languages and it's insane watching them speak it when I don't really understand.

Those tiny little seat mudguards are a tad optimistic looking at the weather. It does not look at all fun today, poor riders. Still at least it isn't snowing this year!

Wow, strong legs there on nibbles.

Doesn't make any sense does it? Cannondale are dragging the rest pretty quickly anyways, so it may be an individual bid....

Hard to tell, does he think he can get away or is he doing it because it is expected of him or is he just taking a chance 'cos the peloton may all slide off going down the Cipressa? Dunno, makes it a bit more interesting though!

I always get twitchy watching the wet down hilling. I've lost the rear wheel in the wet and using brakes on the way to work a few times - so going pretty slowly - I'll trust they know what they're doing.Smile

Dunno, Wiggo wasn't so awesome last year down hill in the wet was he? Grin

Oooh, what's going to happen, I want a good sprint finish or Spartacus using his lovely thighs to speed past everyone whilst looking like he's out for a Sunday ride.

Ah yes, your 'admiration' of Mr Cancellara and his thighs - I forgot!

Looks like it's poker time.

Not just Cancellara's but they are quite fine Grin Blush

I love this bit, nothing is decided all those hours in the saddle and yet the game is still on. Best sport ever.

Cancellara not looking pleased with that Grin.

Right well apparently WW3 has kicked off in the boys room, back to being a parent. Humph.

Not good for Fabio! Cav was well placed but just didn't seem up for the lunge at all.

From the overhead/behind shot (technical term?) he caught up well with the ones in front then nothing, not a saussage. Didn't realise I'd missed Swifty coming third though, was so busy laughing at how cross Cancellara looked

I had to stay away from the thread as I didn't get to watch the race live due to DH insisting on watching hurling, so catching up now. Hurling is exciting, very fast & furious, but the commentary is in Irish and even after 15 years here my Irish is basic to say the least. Interesting that S4C has cycling coverage in Welsh - TG4 here has it in Irish so I stick to Eurosport

Cancellara didn't look a bit pleased with that, did he?

Looks like the weather took it out of Cav, he had nothing left in the legs. Good to see Swifty coming through for third. Two Brits in the top 5 - that would've been unheard of only a few years go.

LostInWales · 23/03/2014 19:19

You could see Cav was freezing on the coverage, you're right, I bet his body just didn't have it in there to go any faster after that. Poor Cav. 2 in the top 5 and it was a bit of a disappointment one of ours didn't win, yes can't imagine that 10 years ago Grin. Weirdest coverage language was watching the end of the tour when we were on holiday and I think it was Stephen Roche doing the commentary, I can't understand his accent at the best of times but he was commentating in Italian! Cav won that day though so it was good Grin.

and tbf all of the usual sprinting suspects didn't contest it either - Sagan, Greipel, Eddy B-H all got hit by the cold and rain.

Races coming thick and fast now - I'm sure my employers will understand if I take the next 3 months of work....Gent-Welvelgem next Sunday, though Eurosport are off with the tour of Catalonia tomorrow. Don't they ever stop now???

I know, thank goodness for the Sky+ box. I record the races then hog the TV in the evenings.

The race I look forward to most of the Classics is Paris-Roubaix. The combination of mud & cobbles makes for fun viewing, but probably not much fun riding Grin

Volta Catalunya anyone? Interesting start list, Contador, Froomey, Quintana and the rest. I'm never going to get my homework done!
