London 2012 Victory Parade - when the kids are back at school!

So its been announced today that the victory parade will take place through London on MONDAY 10th September.

For all the families who could not afford/get tickets (but paid for the Olympics via taxes), for all the kids who have been transfixed by the games, thank you LOCOG for planning this on a day when all the kids are back at school.

I know that people will say, well if you live on London then you can get there, but us lot out here in the suburbs are still Londoners, but unless the parade is in the evening, then we can't be there.

I am massively dissapointed.

It's to honour Olympic and Paralympic athletes and the Paralympics doesn't finish until the evening beforehand, so I'm interested to know exactly how you think they could do it any earlier?

(Still, I agree that a weekend might have been better, if it could have been scheduled in for 15/16 September)

They can't do it earlier or the paraplympic team will miss out

That would be even more unfair,no?

I think it is ridiculous to do it on a Monday when all the kids are back at school. Why not do it the following weekend so that all the kids can attend? The politicians were so busy chanting about how the Games were such an inspiration for the next generation - so why prevent the next generation from coming out to see their heroes!? Lets try and get it changed!!

I doubt they will change it for a few mumsnetters! Grin

Presumably road closures etc have had to be applied for well in advance

yellowraincoat · 07/08/2012 14:42

So you could watch all the free road events, go to all the free cultural events, visit all the different international houses that were set up, go to the big screens in Hyde/Victoria Park, see the torch and you are still complaining that you can't see this one thing.

Not everything has to be arranged around children.

Doing it on the weekend would mean that people who need to go to work on that Monday could also attend.............

Report
yellowraincoat · 07/08/2012 14:49

But the games don't finish until the Sunday. The athletes can't then be expected to hang around for an entire week because it suits people's schedules better.

Local schools might go out to watch anyway

Inspire a generation...... To bunk off for the day maybe!! Grin

Yellowraincoat - but you expect the athletics competing now to hang around for a few weeks but the Para Olympiasn can't hang around for a few more days ?

Agree it should be at a weekend - so that all can attend , will not disrupt any further people getting into work and so that children can attend.

Monday - bloody stupid !

People might want to get back to their homes? Families? How long have they been at the Olympic village for?

It would have to be for the following weekend... So the 15/16th sept?

Report
yellowraincoat · 07/08/2012 15:06

I don't expect anyone to hang around for anything, TunaPastaBake, I didn't even know they had a victory parade, it seems a bit superfluous when you have all the other attendant stuff as well.

It's not just the athletes, it's all the officials and stuff as well.

yellow where did I say that I hadn't been to the free events/relay/Hyde Park etc?! We have. I just feel that as a 'finale', a parade is a great idea, and its a shame that anyone who has to go to work or school won't see it.

A good point made earlier about the main atheltes having to come back for the parade 3 weeks after their events have finished anyway, so why not just wait until the following weekend anyway?

OP, I didn't say you hadn't been to stuff. I said there's been plenty of opportunities and not everyone can go to see everything, that's life.

It would be a bit of a rubbish ending. Oh we finished today, closing ceremony, everyone excited, now let's hang about for a week.

It's not that simple to just wait about for the following weekend. The IOC, athletes, trainers, officials etc have lives too you know.

Report
TunaPastaBake · 07/08/2012 15:27

But it's obviously simple enough for the current athletics to hang around for a few weeks to Sept 10th ? so why can't others hang around for just a few more days until 15/16th ?

Report
yellowraincoat · 07/08/2012 15:28

I doubt very much that they are "hanging around".

Don't you think that the olympic athletes will leave London? Obviously they're not all still here, they go back to training/home when their event is over.

Report
TunaPastaBake · 07/08/2012 15:44

Of course they will leave London ! But hopefully come back for the Victory Parade - ( not that I will get to see it or my children !), I see no reason at the moment why it can't be at weekend and the Para Olympians wait for a week as the current athletics are going to wait for this for three weeks or so wherever they may wait !

Report
yellowraincoat · 07/08/2012 15:47

It's not just about the athletes. It's all the others involved as well.

And you can't finish something on a Sunday and then wait for a week for the actual finish of it.

People will always moan about something.

Report
TunaPastaBake · 07/08/2012 15:57

The main games finish this Sunday so why can't the Para Olympians and Officials etc wait a few more days after their games finish to have it on a weekend if the current athletes have to wait three weeks for a parade ?

It obviously can't be done until the Para Olympics have finished so why not have it the weekend following ? The current athletes will have to come back to why not others ?

Report
ClaireRacing · 07/08/2012 16:02

I am sure the streets will be crowded enough without having to take children out of school.
