You may have heard that Davina McCall is supporting Sky Ride this year - a national campaign between Sky and British Cycling encouraging thousands people of all ages and abilities to get on a bike and discover the benefits cycling can offer. In honour of this, we’re offering MNers a chance to post questions for Davina themed around cycling for the whole family.

Davina will also be attending Sky Ride Liverpool on 7 September, one of the many Sky Ride Big Bike events taking place across the UK. These events give thousands of people the chance to enjoy a fun day cycling a traffic-free route through their city or town with friends and family.
Sky has said “Cycling in the UK is more popular than ever with a million more Brits now cycling regularly as a result of Sky’s partnership with British Cycling and as excitement reached fever pitch this summer with the Tour de France visiting the UK, there has never been a better time to be inspired to get on a bike.”

Post your questions to Davina here before 31st August and we will send 20 questions over for her to respond to. We will then post her responses back on the thread on 5th September.

Everyone who adds a question (regardless of whether it's answered or not) will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win £150 vouchers for Marks and Spencer.

This Q&A is sponsored by Sky.

Thanks
MNHQ

How have you encouraged your children in a love of sports? What are their favourites?

Tri-suit or separates?

What padded cycling shorts would you recommend?

What do you think about on the bike?

I'm a big fan of your DVD's - find them incredibly convenient as it's not always possible to go OUT running/cycling (which I also enjoy). Do you incorporate cycling into your exercise routine & if so how often?

With the rise in the interest of cycling I worry about safety.
Safety of people who just cycle occasionally, & think it's ok to pop to the shops without a helmet!
The safety of groups of cyclists who use the roads along with impatient motorists.
The safety of motorists who have to deal with groups of 2,3,4 abreast cyclists....chatting... Yes I've seen it.
Motorists sometimes miss signals that cyclists make, or sometimes cyclists don't signal.
The safety of everyone when cyclists weave in and out the cars.
The safety of cyclists when great big lorries whizz by, and appear not to notice them.
I could go on. Lack of Safety in cycling on the roads scares me!
How do you deal with it? Does it scare you too.
( I'm too scared to let my kids out on the roads)

What's the best way to get out on your bike with children who are too small to cycle themselves?

How do you stop your arse feeling like it's on fire after a bike ride?

Report

I second Julia's question. I hadn't ridden a bike for ages and had visions of a serene cycle down the canal. My bum felt like it had broken when I got back. Sad

Glad it's not just me Sparkers.

I rode (part)of the Stratford greenway this year, all of the women in our party felt the same! Is there a magic saddle? Piece of clothing? Cream? Because it put me right off!

Two pairs of pants, padded cycling shorts and a gel saddle might help but I haven't got round to testing it out. I am sticking to speed walking for now. Grin

Bodyglide and good cycling shorts is the answer. And sitting properly.

My question for Davina is: what three things would you like to tell women thinking about cycling as sport?

I need to know how to stop my back from hurting when cycling, my bottom is just fine.

My question is how would you motivate a new Mum to get back into excercise, in particular cycling?

I love cycling in various woodland parks and trails, however, with all it's old narrow lanes and roads and no place for expansion, how can cycling in England ever become a viable method of travel?

Do you cycle in London and if you do what safety tips do you have? I am scared of cycling even though I used to love it - London just seems such an unsafe place for cyclists.

If someone were to grant you a wish, what one thing do you think, from your experience of cycling both in the challenges and as a family, could be done to improve cycling in this country? Bike:)
