Hello
I attended the event.

  • Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?

Yes I really enjoyed the event. My DD is 13 and not really too interested in social media at present so it was good to get an insight into it so I know what to expect. It was useful to learn about the various safety filters which Instagram have in place. I did feel like the whole event was spun positively in favour of Instagram though so I don’t feel like it really covered the darker side of social media.

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

I learnt about the safety filters which are in place and I was surprised to learn that Instagram is only 8 years old. I was surprised that people described it as a community where you can make friends - I see it as just a place to post photos!

  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

Not really, I still feel like you need a lot of common sense and to be watchful over what they’re posting.

  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

I am currently lucky that she doesn’t use it much but she allows me to follow her and I will be monitoring it very closely. I also follow a lot of her friends and I think that’s useful.

  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

I really liked Vicki’s tip that if you wouldn’t want your granny to read it then don’t post it!

  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

I really enjoyed the panel discussion hosted by Claudia. Was good to hear some mother’s points of view.
Least useful - the iPads and displays at the back of the room. Didn’t fully get what It was meant to be or meant to show.

The food was brilliant, the other attendees were lovely and the rucksacks were excellent. I had a really good time. Thank you.

  • Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?

Yes definitely enjoyed the event, even though I am on instagram, learnt lots about it that I did not know , like how they are trying to make it safer for users and prevent bullying comments being posted.
Loved the food and the goody bag! And Martha(from the 5th bake off series) candy cane brownie's!

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

Learnt about Instagram 's safety features, privacy settings, filters and how to report offensive comments.

  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

Yes , Useful things to discuss with them are about the privacy settings, having a private account means they have to agree to who follows them. Can talk to my them about blocking accounts of people who they don't want seeing or commenting on their posts and using the filters.

  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

It was good to hear from some young people and how they use their accounts, how they can be used in postive ways. Reassuring that Instagram are taking online bulling and abuse seriously and have developed ways in which comments can be filtered and you can control who comments.

  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

Keep talking to them! Its good to have regular converstions about your teen social media accounts and time spent online. #timewellspent

  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

Enjoyed all the speakers very informative! Was also great to chat to other parents of teens.
Didn't get round to the displays at the back,so not sure if they were helpful or not!

Hi
I attended the event and had an interesting and useful day.
It was exciting to go to instagrams' / Facebooks' office and I found the event was very relevant to me.
My daughter is yet to sign up to Instagram as I am very unsure about how suitable it is for her. She has been begging me to join and I thought this event would help reassure or at least give me further leads to follow.
What I learnt was that there are some features from instagram that supposedly help to tackle bullying. I thought it was good that instagram have a policy for this but I have since read that there are ways around this and so there may still be problems around bullying. Also, there are a variety of settings that can be set, to stop adverts for example.

I'm not sure if I feel that much safer for my teeanager to be online. I think online life is quite a minefield for parents to understand and although the event was quite informative, it opened up even more questions for me!
I was also a little concerned that although there is an age restriction it is hard for online companies to verify somebody's age.

I would say that I do now feel more positive about instagram and will probably let my daughter join, but only once I have used it myself for a while and feel comfortable with it. Hearing the young people talk about their experience and how it can be useful made me feel more positive about Instagram. For example, the young girl talking about positive body image and the young Muslim girl talking about positive aspects of hijab in the media.

I think my top tip (great question BTW!) would be about switching off adverts for young people (13-18 years).

I found the opening presentation about instagram itself and it's features helpful as no one ever talks to you through features of an app.
I also liked hearing from the young people about their experiences as it gave me a different viewpoint.
The least useful part was actually the parent panel (and that there wasn't a chance For a selfie with Claudia!!!) . I felt that it ended up being a general discussion and not as useful as I would have liked.

Thanks for inviting me to this event, and for the goody bag - my daughter duly relieved me of it when I got in and is now using it as her school bag :)

Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?
I genuinely found the event incredibly helpful and I’m glad I attended. I knew very little about Instagram and I found out useful information which I have already shared with my teenagers.

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

The most interesting bit was how teenagers can manage their feeds and control who they receive comments from. I had thought it was a bit ‘Wild West’ so was pleasantly surprised. I also enjoyed hearing from women who use Instagram in different ways. The young people were particularly inspiring.
  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

I still have worries but I feel better informed. I guess I am still worried about whether my teenagers will discuss their usage with me.
  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

I feel more reassured which is helpful. It sounds like Instagram is making genuine efforts to make itself more responsible.
  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

Simply that there are ways to control the feeds and comments.
  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

I really enjoyed the panel discussion with the young women. They were amazing! I also enjoyed the overview of Instagram at the start. I tried to engage with the exhibits but found that harder as I didn’t really know what to do or what I was supposed to see. The lunch was delicious and the brownies out of this world! I also met some lovely Mumsnetters which was fun. Thanks for including me.

Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?
Yes I really enjoyed the event and found it informative and useful. I knew little about Instagram before the event, even though my daughter is on it.

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

I learnt that Instagram is really trying to show the more positive face of social media. I was pleased to hear how it tackles bullying and harrassment. Also to learn about the privacy features.

Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?
I think so, but it boils down to my daughter talking to me about her experiences. The guide helped to open a conversation about her use of Instagram and the benefits and potential downfalls of using it.

  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

A little. I now see that Instagram can be used for promotion and support networks.

  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

Get to know the safety and privacy features as they can help if your child is experiencing problems.

  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

The panel discussion with the young women and talking to others at the back about how they use Instagram in different ways. The food was great too!

Everyone who attended At Home With Instagram and leaves their feedback on the event will be entered into a prize draw to win one of three £100 voucher of their choice (from a list).

  • Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?

Yes, thank you, I had a really good day.
I have a teenager who isn't yet interested in social media & a soon-to-be teenage son who will definitely want to get involved; I now feel more prepared, even if that means I am more aware of what I don't know, iyswim.

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

As someone very new to Instagram, I was interested to learn about the features of this particular social media platform & the aims of those at Instagram to make it a kinder, safer & supportive place, particularly for teenagers. The Parent's Guide is a useful prompt & will be a good conversation starter with my son when the time comes.

  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

I am now more aware of some of the features that will help to keep my teenager safer online, but I think it would be unrealistic to say that I can definitely 'keep them safe online' after this. The day felt like the start of a conversation...

  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

Having listened to the panel of teenage Instagramers, I can see how having a purpose to an Instagram account (beyond communicating with friends etc.) can be empowering & provide users with a voice.
I still have some reservations around some of the features & filters & there were contradictory messages during the day (e.g. it's age 13 & above for users, yet one panel member mentioned their 12 year old using Instagram; the 'no nudity' rule for Instagram, yet nude images can evidently be uploaded, etc.).

  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

The 'Managing Time' chapter in the parental guide will be particularly useful for when my son starts to inevitably allow time to disappear on Instagram, however knowing how to find & use the privacy features, manage comments & how to block is crucial.

  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

Listening to the overview of features (although for me it was just a little too fast-paced) was very useful & the teenage Instagramers were inspiring.
Not being able to log on to the exhibits at the back meant that this aspect was not at all useful for me. Whilst it was interesting to listen to Justine & to the panel discussion, there was some repetition here & perhaps it wasn't necessary to have both.

The day was really enjoyable, the goody bag was great, the food & hospitality lovely & the opportunity to meet other Mumsnetters was a real treat. I do feel, however, that without sounding horribly greedy, I would like the chance to follow-up & look more closely at some of the issues raised...

Hi i attended the event

  • Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?

i enjoyed the event i have five children, three older and one 16 and 11. My DS 16 is on instagram and i don't really know much about it so i was interested to find out more. My youngest son 11 has ASD and is not yet on instagram but i am worried about him as he gets into these things. i am concerned about the safety aspect of it and the bullying that could go on.

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

i did not realise that instagram was only eight years old. i was interested to find out about the safety features and what people post as i did not really understand what it was used for
  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

i think i now have a bit more insight into how it works and the safety features and the fact that you can report posts if they do not look right.
  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

i am still worried about when my youngest son is 13 and wants to use instagram as he is young fro his age and has ASD i will have to try to watch what he is doing to some extent.I have had conversations with my son 16 about internet safety so hopefully he is aware.
  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

the parents guide is useful and written so that it can be understood by myself and others that are new to instagram it will be a useful tool when speaking to my sons.
  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

i enjoyed listening to the young people about their experience of instagram and how they use it. i did not really understand much about it so it was very good to hear them speak about their experiences. the screens and exhibition at the back i did not really know what it was there for so did not explore it. I enjoyed the food and the goody bag which my daughter loves. thank you very much for inviting me. i feel like i know a bit about instagram now which is great.

Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?
The event was both enjoyable and informative. I have a teenage girl with some learning difficulties and find social media a minefield. Hopefully I can implement some of the new tools I learnt

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event? Along with learning more about keeping my daughter a little safer in her social media communications I discovered how much of a community posters can create. I hadn't really considered this more positive aspect of Instagram beforehand
  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online? I still feel its difficult as a parent to keep my daughter safe. The creation of multiple accounts is hard to keep a handle on. I tend to use my adult nephews to help me to police some of the activity - they either connect directly with my daughter or have flagged issues to me. It was good to hear from others that this is a good way to monitor accounts
  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram? I feel more able to have a conversation with her now - a little more knowledge helps! I will also be having a chat about how Instagram can be used more positively
  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know? The information on safety filters and blocking most helpful
  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful? I was totally inspired by the various speakers at the event, especially the younger contributors. I have followed a couple who especially stood out. I didn't really get chance to look at the displays at the back.

Thank you, you looked after us very well, lovely food, great to chat to some other mumsnetters and a special thanks for the bag - soon filled with a sneaky post event Christmas shopping trip!

  • Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?

Yes it was a good day. And some parts very useful.
  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

Learnt about filters that I hadn't heard about and how they try to get underage children's accounts shut down
  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

I don't think that it is a single issue that can be answered with a yes/no. It will be connected to all my other parenting.
  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

Not specially, I am the more avid poster to Instagram in my family and even then I only post about once a month. They watch videos and tease me about my number of followers.
  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?I think it is interesting to know how much time you spend on Instagram and that is helpful. I think the ability to turn off comments etc, is also useful.

  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

Most useful - the first talk about safety features - we could have done that interactively. Most interesting - Tessy Ojo. Least useful - the young people using Instagram - we know there are people doing good things with social media out there but they are not the norm and they are not the teenagers of most of the parents in the room. Lovely people though and always good to hear them.

Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?

  • I really enjoyed the event, it was great to get to go to Instagram HQ! I am an avid instagram user so I was concerned that I might not find it that useful but I did learn a few tips.

What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?
  • From the introduction from Instagram there were a few good tips, some of the blocking info was useful I didn't know you could block certain words or emoji's from being used.

Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?
  • I think the session really just re-enforced that I am doing ok keeping up with my teenagers and hoping they are still happy to have me following them and their friends :-)

Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?
  • No. They will follow and post what they like and I know they will come to me if there was ever an issue.

What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?
  • The time management tip, how to block follows or even words from posts and DM's

Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?
  • The most useful part was from the Instagram staff.
  • Least useful was the 'interactive exhibition' I have no idea what it was all about. Also, although I thought Vicki and Tessy were really good guests that Q&A panel was the least useful. I have followed a few new people that I met and found interesting, its always good to expand your normal followers!

Met some really lovely and interesting women at the event. The goody bag was amazing, as was meeting Martha and trying her gorgeous candy cane brownies! Thank you so much for asking me along :-D

Sorry for the delay getting my feedback on here. I really enjoyed the event and it was lovely to meet the Mumsnet team. Here are my answers:

  • Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?

The event was well organised and there were lots of friendly people there plus it was a cool venue!

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

It was useful to find out the variety of controls built in to manage interactions when you have a public account that anyone can comment on. I also loved meeting the youngsters doing so many creative things with their Instagram accounts.

  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

Definitely - my older teen has recently made her account public but I have already discussed with her why I think it should remain a private account and she has reverted back to that following our discussion of the pros and cons.

  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

I am still not keen on my ten year old getting an account when she is older as I see the amount of time my 16 year old spends on it but having met the inspirational young people using Instagram, maybe I can channel them into doing something more productive with their account than endless duck face selfies!

  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

Creating custom filters to block out certain words or emojis in comments is very useful for teens that may have a particular sensitivity.

  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

The talk from the Instagram team member detailing the security features was really helpful. Can’t think of the least useful part as it was lots of short talks that kept the interest going!

I really enjoyed the event - it was well organized with great catering and lovely to meet new people. I don't know that much about Instagram so it was useful

Learning about the safety features - how to use filters and how to block unwanted comments. My 14year old used Instagram so I feel a bit more able to talk to her with a bit of knowledge!

Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?
Definitely feel I have more of handle on it

Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?
Yes, I feel less worried about it and more confident about having a conversation

What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?
The safety features are worth knowing about and also there is more to instagram - lots of young people are tackling issues that affect their lives

Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?
The talk from the instagram women at the beginning was useful and I enjoyed the panel discussion
Least useful was probably the Young People users - and why no young men talking?

  • Overall, did you enjoy the event? Did you find it useful?

I really enjoyed the event, fabulous too meet other mumsnetters and discuss what had been talked about on the day. I found all parts of the day useful for different reasons.
  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

I learned far more about the safety features available and also how to access them, such as the blocking people and also key words and emojis. I also found out that teenagers are using Instagram for far more than just selfies and that parents and teenagers can have a common ground in Instagram.

  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

I feel i know more about how to keep my teenagers safe online but as with most there is probably more to learn. I also feel that a lot of the safety features Instagram have put on are great but a lot of what could be a danger to teenagers is in the hand of parents to take responsibility for, e.g watching out for their mental will being and keeping a dialogue between us.

  • Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?

I feel a lot more positive about my teenagers using Instagram having seen some of the inspirational teenagers who post on there and how they are using Instagram for spreading positive messages and information.

  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

Too top would be to make some time to look through the safety features and talk to your child about them so that you can both be aware of what can and can be done.
  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

The found being told about the safety features very useful but most useful was the panel discussion as it was great to hear from Instagrammers who also have teenagers and how they have dealt with parenting and social media.
The l east useful was the exhibition at the back as it wasn't really explained what we were supposed to be doing with it.
Overall it was a really interesting day which i thoroughly enjoyed.

Yes, I really enjoyed the event. Lovely to meet new interesting people and find out more about social media and teens.
What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?
Like other posters, I found the info. about filters and settings particularly useful. I have a son who is just beginning to show an interest in this type of thing so I feel that I am now ahead of the curve for once which feels good!
Do You feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?
Definitely. Really useful hints and tips given.
Do you feel any differently about your teenagers using Instagram?
It was good to hear from some of the young users and hear how they use the media positively rather than how I always imagine it is used.
What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?
You really need to understand how privacy settings etc work. This is really important in protecting your young teens.
Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?
Most useful hearing from young users and how they utilise the technology. Least useful the display at the back of the room which I didn’t really engage with.

The event was interesting and well-organised. I found the information quite useful. I enjoyed meeting fellow Mumsnetters and, of course, Martha’s delicious brownies!

  • What did you learn from the At Home With Instagram event?

Must admit that, so far, I have no reason to need the safety features so had been a bit lax about implementing them. I’ve now discusss with my daughter and enabled some of them
  • Do you feel you now know how to keep your teenagers safer online?

im definitely more aware of the security features offered by instagram and have discussed the various options with my daughter (15)

I feel more positive about her use of Instagram and feel confident they’ll continue to evolve online protection for teens in particular.
  • What is your top tip that you either learnt at the event or from reading the parental guide that you would like other parents to know?

It’s important to familiarise oneself with the safety features available and to discuss them with ones child.
  • Which part of the event did you find most useful and which part did you find the least useful?

Most useful: the panel discussion. Nice to see that parents who are using Instagram have concerns about their chidrens’ usage. I particularly liked hearing from the teens/20-somethings about finding online communities
Least useful: like most of the others I found the iPad display at the back disorganised and not presented in a way that engaged me
