How are you keeping your family active while at home? Share your tips with Nike Kids Move Crew

With lockdown rules still in place, we have turned our homes and gardens into a playground to help our children stay active by playing inside. With many of us juggling work and keeping children active, we know that finding fun ways to entertain your children and channel their energy in creative play can be a challenge.
That’s why Nike, in partnership with ukactive Kids, has launched the Move Crew - daily activity missions, designed to help kids unlock their 60 minutes of daily recommended activity.

Here’s what Nike says:
'Move Crew is a daily programme developed with the expertise of teachers and physical activity specialists, elite athletes, kids and coaches. Each day delivers a new mission, designed to get kids aged 7-12 on their feet. Across 8-weeks, each Monday, a Nike athlete announces a weekly theme at ukactive.com/movecrew, and every morning, the new Mission is released. One of our athletes Dina Asher-Smith, the fastest British woman in recorded history said: “As an athlete, mixing it up and giving myself daily challenges is the best way to stay motivated. I’m so excited to have got to work with ukactive and Nike to inspire young boys and girls to keep moving at home.'

With that in mind, we want to find out more about the ways you and your children are staying active. How are you and your children staying active at home? Do your children have favourite activities? Perhaps you and your family have invented games to keep active? What do you miss most about playing outside with more freedom? What are the biggest challenges you face when trying to find fun or educational activities for your children?

From indoor fort building to garden relay, share your stories of keeping your children and family active during the lockdown on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list), provided by Mumsnet.

Thanks and good luck,

Cycling, jogging, Keep fit with Joe (and walking in the woods). We are scheduling some time every day. My child's soon had a house competition to log miles and race against each other

I have signed up to some Zoom Pilates, yoga and dance classes which DC often join in with me (although as they are 4 and 5 often get bored and wander off).
DH has taken up jogging, although it's killing his knees.
We take DC to the park twice a week and they get a chance to run around and burn off some energy but they are still climbing the walls.

We have given up. We are going to do a massive long walk to my ma at the weekend probably though. I do a little run with DS in the morning, but it is frankly pathetic.

We are so, so lucky, because there's a field behind our house that doesn't belong to us but is accessible to all the houses here. So we've been walking round it once a day come what may, rain or shine. If we feel energetic, we walk back again the other way. Occasionally we run and try not to die from the effort. My kids are teenagers, so I don't tell them what to do so much anymore, but they do forget about exercise if they're engrossed in something else so I remind them on the days they're busy and they remind me when I'm getting so bogged down in work that I've forgotten.

We're trying to go for a walk every lunchtime and after dinner we have a bounce on the trampoline. Oh and the Joe Wicks morning workout of course!

My DC enjoy playing in the garden/on trampoline which is very helpful, plus we have a massive park with a few large ponds so going for a walk can be quite interesting spotting wildlife.
When raining, I've put a virtual walking tour video from YouTube on TV and we've walked on the spot and toured Pompeii, a zoo, Pyramids etc :)

I do at least 2 exercise classes via zoom in my kitchen every day. The kids and I go for a walk most days. However with the weather being so hot, we usually pick up an ice cream on our rounds

We started off so well - Joe Wicks, trampoline, running around in the garden, workouts on tv.
Then it all went to pot and we lazed around and now we’re trying to get active again.
Now it’s more work outs on tv for me, garden for dc and regular walks and bike rides for everyone.

We've going for regular walks and bike rides and playing some fun games with the kids like writing down lots of animals and making up a move for them like cheetah run fast on the spot, put them in a hat and take in turns to choose one and everyone joins in for 30 seconds each time. My kids are little obviously Grin

Searched out local walks. I am amazed that I have grown up in this area and have only since lockdown discovered various walks. We are only a few miles from central London but found a working farm a 10 minute walk away.

My very active DS used to do a lot of sport before lockdown. At home we go for cycles and runs. He logs his achievements on strava. We also do activities like skipping and football skills and yoga in the garden. That's all good but DS misses playing with his peers, things like football, it, racing.

We go out for a walk (me)/scooter ride (dcs) every day. It's quite hilly where we live so it can be hard work. We are very much looking forward to when the playgrounds open again though...

We've done kids yoga, but I also signed us all up for a virtual 20km race that is Marvel themed.

Basically if the kids run, scoot, walk or whatever, 20km by the end of the month they'll 'win' a Thanos-themed medal. DH thinks it's a bit daft having paid £13 for them but DD and DS are keen as mustard and frankly it was worth 26 quid for me not to have to bribe/nudge/cajole them into some long walks for fresh air and exercise.

Cosmic yoga and Joe wicks for in the house. But we've tried to get out at least twice daily for walk/runs

Report
mamaduckbone · 03/06/2020 19:41

Mine aren't great at online classes - we tried Joe Wicks but found it annoying after a couple of weeks. Long walks, bike rides, badminton and swingball in the garden, basketball and throwing/kicking a rugby ball around in the park, and scooting for ds2. We're lucky enough to live in an area with plenty of green space which isn't overpopulated so we've been able to get out pretty much every day.

He's spent hours everyday on the trampoline which he loves and thankfully the weather has allowed it.

We also have a family walk two or three times a week and he takes his bike out.

We've been doing a lot of walks. The only way to get my kids out though is to make it into a scavenger hunt looking for a list of different things whilst we're out in nature.

They have also spent a lot of time out on their bikes - so much that my eldest now doesn't need her stabilisers any more.

RomaineCalm · 04/06/2020 09:55

We are walking every day. It's become part of the routine and I hope that we will keep it up post-Covid.

Some days it's just a couple of miles, other days we walk further.
