The chance to spend time away from home and in a new environment is a treat that many of us look forward to. Occasionally, however, we can forget to take everything back home with us once the holiday is over. HomeAway would love to hear about the strangest things that you have left behind or found from former guests in a holiday home.

Here is what HomeAway has to say: “HomeAway offers more than 2 million unique places to stay in over 190 countries around the world, from villas to cottages, from beach houses to tree houses, from mountain cabins to even castles! Over one-third of HomeAway's nearly 1.5 million online bookable listings are now instantly bookable, with no wait for confirmation. The holiday home expert’s mission is to provide families and groups of travellers with the perfect match holiday home to create unforgettable memories together. Not only do holiday homes provide excellent value for travelling families and group of friends, booking a whole house also guarantees more space and flexibility than a hotel or resorts.

Ever wondered how much your home could earn for you? HomeAway is here to help you learn what it takes to rent your home and invite travellers in for unforgettable experiences. Click here to find out more.”

Have you ever found unusual items in the fridge? Maybe you managed to leave just one shoe in the wardrobe? Or your underwear in a strange location? Perhaps you’ve even found something as random as a walking stick or a diary? Share them all on the thread below...no matter how strange!

Everyone who comments on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

When I was a young teen 14/15, I left my whole address book behind, full of all the friends I had met on holiday over the years and had promised to keep in touch with.

So if your from wales and have an older sister and wondered why the girl you met on holiday never stayed in touch, now you know why Grin

I once left my favourite toy a pound puppy 20yrs ago, in a holiday cottage. The kind lady who owned the place sent it back to me through the post!

Nitrous oxide cylinders, rizlas, lighters and cards from an adult card game under the beds and sofas of a 'family house' in the Lake District.

Just what the young kids wanted Hmm

I have skin allergies, and my most sensitive area is my face, so I take my own silk pillowcase with me on holiday. After leaving one too many cream or white silk pillowcases behind, I bought a new set and dyed them fuchsia pink. Haven't forgotten one since then!

My friend rented a student/holiday type home in north wales and we unlocked a room to discover crutches and a blow up sheep. Confused

A very pretty ring stuck in the rubber door seal of the washing machine in a house in Andalusia.

I sent a photo to the owner in the U.K. & she said it was the local caretaker’s engagement ring! She was delighted to get it back Smile

A pile of vintage 'Good Housekeeping' magazines - they kept me occupied for the whole of a rainy week, so were a good find.

We stayed in a lovely lighthouse cottage one Easter and had the best Easter Egg Hunt. I'm sure we left at least one creme egg behind, though!

We stayed in a gorgeous cottage in Yorkshire this April. Bought a portable shower to wash off the dogs after their muddy walks and left it behind!

When I was 8 we stayed in a beautiful cottage in rural Wales that was picture book perfect, nestled at the edge of a secluded forest. Until we found a rusty machete under one of the beds and realised there was no wood pile requiring chopping. No one slept well that week.

I did a treasure hunt for the kids and was too good at hiding things, then forgot where. I am hoping the sweets didn't go sticky and cause problems 😱

My husband has left behind several things on holidays. These were on different occasions and very different locations; an iPad, his gum shield that he wears to bed to stop him grinding his teeth, an entire suitcase full of all his clothes, his suit carrier with 2 expensive suits in it and some fish & scallops (it was a fishing holiday, we were gutted to get home and realise our lovely dinner was 9 hours drive away).

In a damp cottage in Cornwall, on a rainy break with small DCs, we made cupcakes. For some reason we left the whole lot of them on a plate in a kitchen cupboard CakeConfused

One holiday cottage that we stayed in had 4 cheese graters in the kitchen.

DH and I spent all week saying "any cheese with that?" every time we sat down to eat which was hilariously funny at the time but not at all funny now I've written it down Blush

I once left a notepad filled with inheritance tax case law in a hotel room. I was studying for exams at the time and thought I'd have a flick through whilst on a break.

Wonder what the cleaner made of it.....

Staying in a very very smart hotel in Dubai, rolled up in the back of a cupboard there was a leopard print thong. I was using the cupboard to put my gym things in.. I imagine it was being used as a dirty linen cupboard-it was right at the back, so would be hard to spot. Needless today, I picked it up in a tissue and threw it away. Thankfully, everything else was perfection.

We left various soft toys (all returned - for which we were very very grateful) and, to our shame, a bottle of formula. Yuk. We hunted high and low for that tommee tippee bottle and gave up in the end.

A slightly broken tyrranosaurus rex 'grab-toy' that roared when you squeezed the lever.
Also a small soft toy mouse of one of Bagpuss's mouse organ pals.
Also my husband's watch that I bought him for his 21st. Grrr. Never got it back.
