This activity is now closed

The UK isn’t exactly known for having warm, sunny weather so we often have to make the most of what we’ve got and try to make our homes feel as bright as possible...even on the rainiest of days. VELUX would like you to enter their Pinterest competition and hear the reasons why you would love to add a single-storey extension to your home.

Grant Sneddon, VELUX daylight expert says: “Many people tend to rely on glass doors such as bi-fold and patio doors to bring daylight into their extensions. However, as extension doors tend to be further away from the original room, natural daylight – even on the brightest of days – can’t penetrate very far into the house. VELUX roof windows are the answer. They let in twice as much daylight as vertical windows because the glazing is angled directly towards the sun.”

VELUX wants you to create your own home extension mood board on Pinterest with inspiration for creating a space that’s filled with natural daylight for you and your family to enjoy at home. Whatever you would do to bring daylight into your home extension, pin all your inspiration on your mood board and share it with VELUX.

Carefully follow the guidelines below.

1) Create a moodboard on Pinterest showing your inspiration for your home extension – but remember to think daylight! Include pins of light, airy, bright space and roof windows.
2) You can pin content from VELUX and anywhere else that inspires you. For inspiration, take a look at our own board here.
3) Tag your moodboard with #VELUXextensions
4) Then submit your board URL in the form here to enter

As well as creating your mood board, we would love you to share what your family would do if you could add a single-storey extension to your home. Do you have a particularly dark kitchen that you would love to open up to bring some natural light in so you can entertain friends and family? Perhaps you have a young family and want an extension that doubles as a playroom to allow you to watch over your little ones as you’re cooking or baking?

Everyone who creates and sends us a link to their mood board will be in with the chance of winning a £300 John lewis voucher. Plus all MNers who comment what they would do if they could extend their home, will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky winner will receive a £250 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and best of luck,
MNHQ

www.pinterest.co.uk/sallydickson946/light-enhancers/ I'd make giant playroom in the attic with swings a shute and small softplay! Alternatively a rooftop swimming pool. I am assuming money is object!!?!!

We are planning on using Velux in our single storey extension starting in July. Our current layout means when I'm in the kitchen, I can't see anyone else in the house. The back of the house faces North East and doesn't get much natural light, to combat this we're putting in 3 120x78cm Velux windows as well as bifold doors and a bigger window. I've lived nearly 4 years in a small, dark kitchen with ripped & rippled lino and tiny worktop space. By knocking through to the dining room and adding a full width 3m extension, we will have the open plan, social and family friendly open plan room that my husband and I have always dreamed of! Winning this would hugely help with our plans and might allow us to upgrade to the gorgeous electric Velux windows 😊

Have seen some gorgeous moodboards around this - I'd love to open up our stairs by putting some kind of huge skylight or atrium at the top of the landing.

We moved into our first home last year. The whole house is like a timewarp from the 70s. Unfortunately it has a awful single skinned extension in the kitchen, a metal outside door and no heating. It got down to 2degrees one day through the cold snap. I'm quite worried about ttc with the kitchen in the state it is in, as I couldn't bring child into kitchen in the cold. I would love a single story extension, along the back over our house overlooking our beautiful garden. Combine kitchen and dining room to something I've always dreamed of, a huge open plan kitchen/diner where we can host my family, who live hundreds of miles away and DPs family. Would be a dream to have patio doors direct into the garden to plan for a future raising little ones, and having a good view on them running around.

We would create a stunning light filled space that would make the most of the views of our Garden and where we could spend time together as a family (obviously there would be no bickering, my cooking would suddenly be incredible and the whole house would be magically self-cleaning).

I'd love to have an extension off of our kitchen/diner that would predominately be a playroom for our three boys. I love the idea of it being really light and airy, lots of natural light and big windows to show of the stunning views around us.

I'd love to extend our kitchen diner to include a seating area. It gets loads of light and it would be lovely to spend more time in there soaking up the sunshine.

Mind you, having seen the loft extension shower rooms with velux windows, I'm seriously considering a loft extension again. It would be a lovely start to the day!

We have an extension planned currently and are awaiting planning permission.
We want to create a kitchen diner, and area across the back of house that looks onto garden. It will all be open plan, and the front room that was previously a through room to dining room will be closed off with a wall and door, so there's somewhere to go more private. We've lived in this house six years and always planned an extension but glad we lived here a while before deciding because over the years what we wanted has changed as we've grown used to the house.

I would turn our current one storey extension into a two storey making both my DD'S room and the spare into bigger spaces. Really want her to have a double room like the rest of us. Would be fab to make the spare (junk) room a more usable space too.

Now the children are of an age that we can routinely all eat dinner together after DH gets back from work, I really want to expand the kitchen into the side return to give us space for a proper dining table. I’m fed up with pulling the mini table out and all squeezing round it.

I would love to do a loft conversion and make it into a playroom/ space to relax for the children. I would have huge windows and lots of floor space.

We’ve already extended our loft last year to add 2 bedrooms and a bathroom, it all has velux windows and is really nice and light! We also have an extension out the back of the house that was already here when we bought it, that’s a playroom. So not much room to extend any further now! But I’ve always wanted to dig out a basement to use for a gym, and generally kid running around space. Getting light in to that would definitely be a challenge though I’m sure

I would love to add a playroom to the house, somewhere to contain the majority of the toys, with wipe clean walls, floors and surfaces so that they could do crafts without me stressing. It could contain the noise a bit too so that if someone wanted quiet they could go elsewhere in the house and find a quiet spot because the noisy play would be contained to one room

I would love to add a single extension along the length of the back of my property, so it linked to the kitchen and also the living room. I'd love to be able to use it to brighten up my kitchen, but also as a space to entertain and be closer to nature. I want to be able to see blue skies when I look up, and open the doors wide to feel the spring breeze and summer sunshine.

I'd also pop Velux windows in my loft space, even though it's just for storage at the moment!

foxessocks · 08/03/2018 15:32

I would extend into the garage, to make a bigger kitchen / dining area so we didn't have to have our dining table in our living room.

I would like to extend my hallway and make it much lighter and taller - a sloping style Velux window would be ideal for this.

ApocalypseNowt · 08/03/2018 19:45

We've got an end terrace with a crappy old conservatory on the side. I'd like to use the space to make a light airy 'garden' room - this would double up as a room for our pet rats so they could have the run of the place. My DD's love to play with them so it'd be a rat/dc play room.

We'd need to get as much light in there as possible as it's not south facing - velux windows would work really way of making the most out of the space.

If I could add an extension I would certainly maximise my space and re jig the rooms in our small bungalow! As we often know, you can have lots of space but the layout can be difficult. I would open out the kitchen and create a back door as well as finally having space for a big dining room table! Think lots of light coloured walls and bright tiles!

We would love a bigger kitchen. Velux windows would be perfect in this

We live in a bungalow with the back of the house facing north. This makes the kitchen very dark and gloomy at the best of times. I would love to extend it out and use Velux windows to bring in lots more natural light. This would change the whole feel of the place and make it the heart of the home rather than being the cold ‘north face’ it is at the moment..

I'd extend my dark north facing kitchen with some roof windows and maybe some sun tunnels

I would knock down the sub-standard extension that was on the house when we bought it (18 years ago) and replace it with a bedroom with ensuite for dh and I. Then the boys could have a bedroom each upstairs.
