A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I prefer a dark room with no light shining under doors or through curtains. As I sleep with a snorer, ear plugs are a must ! A room at an ambient temperture, and a fairly firm mattress with good quality duvet and bed linen.

DS is a very bad sleeper. He uses a fan for white noise and always has a bath before bed.

I'm not too bad a sleeper but if I'm finding it hard to drop off I usually get myself cold then go back to bed. I find the slow warmth makes me sleepy.

My electric blanket has transformed my sleep! I find I relax and fall asleep much more easily when I am getting into a toasty warm bed.

Since being a mum, and having broken nights for years my sleep pattern has suffered. I found that essential lavender oil on my pillow, a dark room, and controlled deep breathing manages to lull me off a lot easier, and am now sleeping a lot better, and just as important I have more energy for what the day has in store for me.

I don't sleep very well unfortunately but I have found ways to help this.

I have a bath before bed using lavender bubble bath or bath bomb.

I then use a deep sleep pillow spray which does help to relax me too.

Also, I have recently found that I am much more comfortable when I sleep on just one pillow (I was sleeping on two until recently)

DP falls asleep most nights as soon as his head hits the pillow. He has no problems sleeping whatsoever!

Since using a white noise app when my twins were in my room I now find it much easier to sleep with a rain sound playing!

Be warm and snuggly. Calm before bed.

If the bedroom's too warm I can't sleep, I find myself and the DC all sleep better when the room is cool.

I find a cool room much more conducive to good sleep, it makes being snuggly under the duvet so much more comfortable.

I can't bear a stuffy, hot room and have the window open all year round. In the summer we have a Dyson fan too directed just on me.

I suffer from anxiety and sometimes sleep can be a problem for me, no matter how comfortable I am. I've discovered recently that if I put a podcast on, it's enough to take my mind off the stuff I'm obsessing about so that I can drift off to sleep. I use the sleep setting so it goes off by itself after 15 minutes. Works a treat.

Cool room. Fluffy socks (if your feet are cold, you won’t sleep). Cat curled up on his blankie at the foot of the bed. Read for half an hour before lights out. No screens for an hour before bed. Firm, but not rock hard mattress. Cotton bed linen and feather/down/wool duvet and pillows. Microfibre, no matter how expensive, either goes lumpy or flat. No memory foam if you get hot flushes.

Following this as my sleep isn't great after the constant disruptions of kids for the past couple of years. A big help is keeping screens to a minimum in the run up to bed time. I put a couple of drops of lavender oil on me feet as well which helps a bit too. And having the electric blanket on before bed is lovely and relaxing and so snuggly to get into

Dark, quiet and no central heating on in the room. This is my ideal sleeping conditions for me and my husband.

Interesting to read about the noise app and also podcast that switches off. I may try both as I'm not a good sleeper.
I need to have warm feet - when it's cold outside but also find I cannot settle if I'm too hot so I make sure our bedroom is much cooler than the rest of the house.

Having 5 young kids a good sleep is very rare without at least one waking up in the night, but to make myself comfy I make sure that

  • The bed sheets are clean on that night and have just come out the tumble drier (in winter) so they are warm and freshly smelling.
  • my pillow is not flat but not hard just in-between firmness
  • No tv or phones for a hour before bed just a book to nod off reading it by my bedside light.
  • window open a tiny tiny bit to keep air in bedroom fresh and circulating and not stale or sweaty.

And if my partner snores he gets a nudge with my elbow so I don't have to disturb myself too much by talking to wake him to stop it !! Grin

I've cut out caffeine after 6pm which seems to work for me and because I suffer with alot of joint pain, I invested in a memory foam mattress and a memory foam pillow, both have really helped me sleep better. Every night I also put a few drops of lavender essential oil on a cotton handkerchief inside my pillow case and I definitely think that also helps relax me 😴

CopperPan · 12/02/2018 14:41

I don't drink caffeine after about 3pm and that has helped a lot. I use a lavender pillow spray which helps me relax, and we upgraded our mattress to a good firm support one last year which has helped me sleep much better.

I go and check on all my kids before I go to sleep. I give them all a kiss and cuddle and tell them I love them. This helps me sleep as I know they are all safe and sound. The anxiety would keep me awake if I wasn't able to do that.
