Our eldest is heading rapidly towards the age when she will need a laptop for school work.
I would also love to get all the children learning to touch type as I think it is such an essential skill.

i dread getting a new laptop - it has to be able to run games for our son who is 15 so it needs a good processor, it needs really good battery life as it will be charged and drained constantly, and the man likes a nice big screen so its easier for him to look at photos of some metal bits he needs for fixing some obsolete piece of equipment at work, and me? well i like to surf the forums and bingo halls and I hate being crashed part way through a game and losing 20p! haha.

Ds2 (4) would use a laptop for educational games/improving his speech (assessment for 'something' going on)
DS1 (6) would use it for making his little animation movies and coding
I'd use it for photo storage

Our laptop is used for everything- homework, music downloads, YouTube, gaming, emails, social media, banking - just everything by everybody and whereas it was once the bees knees it is several years old now. It takes literally 5 minutes to even boot up and it is getting slower and slower. It's a shame because we have kept it nicely and it's obviously very useful but the time is nearing for a replacement just because we cannot keep waiting so long for it to function.

I look for a laptop (an always read reviews which are impartial Which for instance). My son loves to pay games and watch dvd's when in the car, so I look for a laptop with a decent size screen, and a battery life of around 3 hours (but when on a car journey I adjust the power save settings to prelong the battery life. I am with BT so have installed McAfee just in case I get a virus, which may affect my laptop. I am teach my son how to use CD's where to file them and where to find the files once they have installed. I looked for an I7 processor when I picked a laptop so that downloads and updates are quick, and the laptop will last for several years as it is a major purchase which, if used well, looked after, updated should last for years.
