Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

My son has just gone into year 9 and as I'm disabled a laptop would mean my son can sit next to me and do his homework. I'll be able to monitor what he does and see the end result.

Something lightweight. My laptop weighs a ton and something smaller would make it easier to carry in my bag for work

My laptop is getting on a bit and is running out of storage space as I like to put my photos and videos on it for editing. Ideally I'd love something with a bigger hard drive.

I am about to start a university degree to improve our family's quality of life. If I had a laptop I could do my coursework without being in the TV room surrounded by noise.

My laptop is super slow, when it works at all, and we really need it for homework!

My son Phoenix would love this for homework and is actually on his Santa list! We dont have a laptop or pc in the house and would definitely make his life easier rather than using the library ones for research.

It would be great, I want to go back to studying so it would mean no fights over the PC when we all need to do homework.

Our eldest is heading rapidly towards the age when she will need a laptop for school work.
I would also love to get all the children learning to touch type as I think it is such an essential skill.
For me, I need a fast reliable laptop so that I can mumsnet login to my work's remote server and work effectively from home

We need a decent laptop so I can work in the evenings at home rather than late at work, giving us more family time together.

It'd be brilliant! We all share a laptop just now, and this would mean my DD could have her own for homework which would be handy as her school as just made all maths homework online.

I home educate my kids so a laptop would be really handy because it would mean they wouldn't need to share a laptop with everyone else. It would also be faster than what we currently have which is quite slow.

we all share one laptop and it causes so many upsets that another one would seriously contribute to a more relaxed atmosphere at home

We don't have a laptop or a computer. I need to go into my mum's to use hers! I use to have one at uni but it got old and stopped working! Miss having one. It's handy for Christmas shopping online, makes life much easier!

i dread getting a new laptop - it has to be able to run games for our son who is 15 so it needs a good processor, it needs really good battery life as it will be charged and drained constantly, and the man likes a nice big screen so its easier for him to look at photos of some metal bits he needs for fixing some obsolete piece of equipment at work, and me? well i like to surf the forums and bingo halls and I hate being crashed part way through a game and losing 20p! haha.

Ds2 (4) would use a laptop for educational games/improving his speech (assessment for 'something' going on)
DS1 (6) would use it for making his little animation movies and coding
I'd use it for photo storage

My child is starting his GCSEs and could really use a laptop as he has slow handwriting and may be using a laptop for exams.

Our laptop is used for everything- homework, music downloads, YouTube, gaming, emails, social media, banking - just everything by everybody and whereas it was once the bees knees it is several years old now. It takes literally 5 minutes to even boot up and it is getting slower and slower. It's a shame because we have kept it nicely and it's obviously very useful but the time is nearing for a replacement just because we cannot keep waiting so long for it to function.

I look for a laptop (an always read reviews which are impartial Which for instance). My son loves to pay games and watch dvd's when in the car, so I look for a laptop with a decent size screen, and a battery life of around 3 hours (but when on a car journey I adjust the power save settings to prelong the battery life. I am with BT so have installed McAfee just in case I get a virus, which may affect my laptop. I am teach my son how to use CD's where to file them and where to find the files once they have installed. I looked for an I7 processor when I picked a laptop so that downloads and updates are quick, and the laptop will last for several years as it is a major purchase which, if used well, looked after, updated should last for years.
