So the kids are in bed. That means that the grand Movie Date Night In is ON. We want to know how such romantic nights go in your home.

How do you decide which movies to watch with your OH and who gets the final say? Are there any films you’re looking forward to seeing this summer?

What you do to make these evenings special? Do you perhaps have a special movie dinner or snack you love to make? Are there homemade cocktails or mocktails or just a glass of something cold? And if you have any memorable Date Night In moments you want to share, we'd love to hear about them.

Here’s what Sky Cinema has to say: “With Sky Cinema, it’s easy to find something to watch this summer. We've got the ten biggest blockbusters of 2016 available on demand, as well as new premieres every day. From Bridget Jones’ Baby to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them”

All who share their movie date night tips in a post below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 John Lewis voucher!

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Movies are generally based on a recommendation and if the other person hasn't watched it, on it goes. For me it's not DP but normally DFriend.
I'm looking forward to rewatching Beauty and the Beast.
We love watching a good film using a good projector, so much so I got myself one so it wasn't always DF hosting.
Homemade popcorn and normally chips and dips are a must have. I make a mean salsa which DS loves so he has to be in bed before it's made. Then it's normally a good beer or glass of wine. When it's particularly cold out though it's not chocolate and marshmallows for snacks.

Love movie night and we make an effort now to have no phones/iPads as we wouldn't watch the film and be still checking Facebook etc so no phones or anything.
Lots of snacks like nachos and popcorn
Bottle of wine

Movie nights tend to be when we get the kids settled early enough to watch a whole film without either of us falling asleep! They generally aren't romantic! Wink

We choose based on what we are in the mood for, which varies from sci-fi to rom-com. It might be one we have seen a trailer for, a DVD we have bought but never got round to watching, a recording or pay per view.

With 4 DC we don't tend to get to the cinema, even when we are desparate to see a film. We wait to buy in on DVD, by which point we are bursting to see it.

We usually have a bottle of wine or chilled prosecco, with some gourmet bread, cheese, olives or other lush items and call that dinner to save time.

We have a few films we are waiting to see.....but as it's the school holidays, it may have to be family movie matinees with popcorn.

We do family movie nights with homemade caramel peanut popcorn. DH works nights so a night all together is a treasure. When the DC go to their grandparents in the holidays, DH and I will indulge our shared love of classic sci-fi with a good bottle of wine or two. We usually snack on homemade Tortilla chips and onion dip... We're only kissing each other, so onion breath doesn't matter Grin

Biggest tip is not to get carried away with the romance and forget contraception - a new baby 9 months later really reduces the chance of more date nights for a while! BlushGrin

In my head it is always tapenade and Foccaccia, G&T's, candles lit, lying on the sofa together, alone. DC and ddog in bed.

The reality is crisps, dips and cider accompanied by wafts of dog butt every now and again

We do family movie nights and take turns to choose.
My top tip is to put all phones in another room. :)

Wine, bar of dark chocolate, and something thriller/action-ish fits the bill round here (less Fast & Furious, more Marvel/sci-fi stuff).

Thanks to Sky Atlantic we're both watching Game of Thrones although he has to bite his tongue until I've seen it the following evening.

Our date nights are very important to us...because my o/h is 5 thousand miles away with work! We FaceTime lots but miss the sweet things that make up being a couple. One of things we do to spend time together and to keep some normality is have a Film, or as he insists, Movie Date Night - he's American.

The way it works is I stay up late Friday evening nursing a whisky & lemonade & some Pringles and he rushes home from work & grabs a beer and pizza. And then together, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we settle down and watch a film together because we're both able to download and share. He has a love of cinema but especially obscure sci-fi, Simon Pegg & Wes Anderson movies, whilst I enjoy most things in a corset & detectives series but we never disagree about what to watch; he always recommends something he thinks I'll enjoy & he adored War & Peace & The Missing.

We still make time to watch films when we're physically together but we go to the cinema, especially in the States as the experience is slightly different, especially the Drive In & waiter service But being able to share something so simple as watching a movie together makes missing him easier to bear & helps keep us connected.

DH likes action-packed blockbusters and goofy American comedies - I do not so it can be a challenge to find a movie that we both fancy. We put away phones, bowls of popcorn and peanuts. Sometimes wine but that means we'll be asleep very quickly so not conducive to successful movie viewing which sometimes has to be completed over 2 or even 3 evenings!

We like to pick a good recent film that we've been wanting to see at the cinema but not had a chance. It's nice to settle down with snacks and drinks (but not alcoholic for me - it will just send me to sleep!), and I like wrapping up in a cosy blanket on the sofa. I prefer it to going to the cinema now, we can eat what we like and hit pause for toilet breaks!

Whenever we see a trailer for a film we write it on a slip of paper and it goes in a dish and when we are going to have film night we pick one out of that so there's no disagreements. Food depends on wether I'm sticking to my diet or not if I am I will have prawns if not big bag of crisps, popcorn and a bag of revels or peanut m&ms. For a real treat we might get a takeaway pizza.

We usually pick something that has been recommended to us - we don't watch many films so when we do we want to make sure it's a good one!

We often have a drink (wine for me, beer for DH) and some sort of snack (often crisps in a bowl - the bigger the better!).

Phones are put out of reach, the curtains are drawn and we snuggle up on the sofa together - perfect!

Make lists on sky, Netflix and amazon prime to choose from
Always go for one new and one classic
Bowls of treats, toffee popcorn, maltesers
Bottles of Coke
And dominos if we are going all out!

Tidy the room first so it's really comfy

Since having DD we usually wait until films come on sky as we can't make it to the cinema everytime we want to see something, we're waiting for Dr. strange coming later this year

We don't make a big deal of it being movie night sometimes we'll have a bottle of wine and a take away on a weekend but if there's nothing on TV and DD is in bed early enough on a week night we like to watch a film. On a a miserable weekend we might cwtch up on the sofa and watch a few films.

If there's nothing we both want to watch we tend to take turns in picking.

some cava, a few fancy crisps - maybe, if pushing the boat out, some Rafaellos and Danziger Goldwasser cocktail, and then indulgence in the latest stunning anime or pulling a music film form out of the archive. That is sheer pleasure.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 19/07/2017 11:18

Generally something we can agree on that's on sky because we have a stack of dvds to watch but that involves effort Grin

Don't really snack while we watch a film, maybe a box of chocolates if it has just been someone's birthday or Christmas

One new year's eve when it was just the two of us we had both been at work and came home not long before midnight - we ended watching 'Monsters Inc' whilst eating nachos - it was memorable for being a great night despite the fact we were watching a kids' film - we were just relaxed and happy in each other's company.

We usually look at the new movies out and go recommendation, I don't like horror or gore so we tend to go for action or comedy. We have a few snack, kettle chips, peanuts etc. We tend to watch them together without anyone else so that it isn't talked over. I am looking forward to seeing Captain Underpants with the kids and Transformers 3 with my hubby.

We have a movie night that usually starts with us rowing about what we watch although we both can't stand Romcoms!

We usually end up with a compromise of two films in one night and a takeaway curry in our pyjamas to go with it! Heaven.

We like to watch comedies for date night - nothing too heavy or depressing, and there's nothing like laughing together to remind you why you fell in love

Report

The most important thing is for the children to be in bed asleep early enough. If I can get them into bed by 8 then we can watch a full 2 hour film, if it's later than that then I either choose the shortest film possible or will never see the end as I tend to fall asleep right after 10pm as I'm so tired. And we don't eat during it as eating after 8pm makes me feel awful. I'm just a barrel of fun Grin

We have two different movie nights - the ones with the RomComs where we light the candles, crack open the wine and snuggle together on the sofa. That's when we like to be intimate and close.

Our other movie night is where we like to watch really bad horror movies (cringed, but not scary types). These are an opportunity for us to chatter about bad acting, what we would do and generally get to know each better. We usually order a pizza and just enjoy spending time talking with one another.

Nibbles that can be eaten without looking at them and that don't make lots of noise, plenty of wine and no phones

My husband and I haven't been to the cinema together for 5 years, since the birth of our first child. We used to go at least once a month and in time for the trailers to see what we'd like to watch when it came out.

These days we have to go off other friends' recommendations (and looking up reviews). We like thrillers/action/horror together, we wait for the kids to settle in bed, pjs on, snuggle on the couch, turn some lamps off, share a family bag of crisps and chill out. We do this once a week generally and often it's the only quality time we share together in the entire week!

I have a massive crush on tom hanks despite him being old enough to be my dad and make sure we always watch his new films.
