We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Once I made a delicious chicken pie filling from scratch, with love and care, but accidentally defrosted a large slab of chocolate cake instead of puff pastry. So we had chicken pie filling and rice for our dinner that night.

Chilli but with cream crackers instead of tortilla chips - really nice and now oft repeated!

Pasta with marmite and cheese grated on top - no vitamins I'm sure just pure carbs and fat. Saved for when DH is out as he hates marmite and i can enjoy it by myself.

I have a trusty deep fill sandwich maker that makes toasty sandwiches out of absolutely anything and it has come in handy many, many times. The bread has been filled with last nights chinese take away left overs, baked beans, tinned tuna and onion, cheese and onion, bean sprouts - really anything at all that is even the slightest bit edible comes out quite tasty once it has been made into a hot toasty.

Tinned macaroni cheese, mixed with tinned tuna and heated in the microwave. Not very nutritious but nobody cares when you get home late and you're hungry.

I absolutely love eating cold baked beans straight from the tin, and tinned sweetcorn, although not together!.

What DH calls 'anchovy noodles' but I call delicious dinner in a thrice. Basically, spaghetti with tinned anchovies, sauteed garlic and onion and parmesan grated on top. A great stand-by meal but not met with approval from DH when I made it for him when we were 'courting'. Interestingly the DC love it as much as I do, so only a disaster in the eyes of DH Hmm.

I have two sauce-related incidents, one triumphant, one not so much.

I rather rashly thought I could host a sophisticated dinner party for 8 whilst encumbered by a toddler. I decided to go with roast pork, which is my favourite. Just as the pork was coming out of the oven I remembered the absence of apple sauce... It turns out that Heinz apple and apricot baby food, hastily decanted, makes a convincing and elegant accompaniment to roast pork.

The less successful experiment comes from my DF's shortlived career as a teenaged waiter. When asked for tartar sauce and unable to find it he chose to improvise - it's white with green bits in it, right? Turns out that salad cream with a spoonful of mint sauce in it is not an acceptable substitute.

My biggest failure was when I made lasagna and used garlic bread instead of pasta sheets, had to improvise. It's not something that I would make again. Lol. I used mozzarella balls on top of the garlic bread and that was the best part of the dish. Eww
