Christmas candles that smell of cinnamon, getting out the decs that the kids have made. Inviting friends round for mulled wine and mince pies.

The Christmas trees especially when lit up in the dark, watching Christmas films together, the smell of baking and the big family party that we host on Boxing day.

CopperPan Mon 23-Nov-15 15:54:33

We have lots of Christmas lights and other light up decorations, so it's lovely to switch off the main lights and enjoy that flickering glow, especially when snuggled on the sofa with lots of cushions.

The cats pretending that they were just wandering through the hall when we arrived home, they're not pleased to see us at all, and they definitely didn't miss us....but now we're here, they might as well sit on our laps, you know, just as a special favour.

Christmas decorations - particularly my string of little stockings hung above my settee.. Bloody love putting them up.

Will fill them with sweets this year for DS and me

The baubles. DH and I had a December wedding and asked that our guests bought us baubles as gifts. We each bought one with the kids and each year since, the four (then five) of us have each added a bauble. I have a truly eclectic mix from handmade to designer and I love them as they characterise the range of personalities our friends have and how the kids have changed.

When I pull into the driveway after work on the 23rd and see the Christmas wreath on the front door, candles twinkling inside and knowing that's us all home for the holidays... that's what makes our house a home.

I am a careleaver and I was a teenager with a baby when I got my flat.

10 years later my shitty council flat is now mine and my dc home because I decorated it myself, I chose my colour scheme, I saved up and bought nice bedding, nice furniture bit by bit and I saved up and bought luxuries like a huge TV just for my bedroom wall.

My home is my sanctuary because I had to work so hard to make it mine. It might not sound a lot, I doubt I'll ever have money to buy something that looks like it's out of a magazine but the paint on the walls is what I painted, the photos on the wall of my dc are what I took and then found frames then banged picture hooks in with my rolling pin to hang.

I turned my life around to make my home and it reflects that.

My family, I could be anywhere in the world but my family make it home.

foxessocks Mon 23-Nov-15 18:33:21

Our Christmas tree in the corner, television on with Christmas films playing, some Christmas candles lit and my dd running about of course! (And dh must forget him grin )

foxessocks Mon 23-Nov-15 18:33:40

Oops mustn't forget not must!!

MissFitt68 Mon 23-Nov-15 19:06:03

Tinsel has a 'smell' about it doesn't it .... They should create a candle with its scent!

The sound of bells on every advert... Quality street tin.... The tree! It all makes it homely. And the Nordic phase! Very cosy

All of our stuff and the memories they hold make our house a home year round. We have Christmas decorations bought on various trips over the years that make things extra special at this time of year. Family also makes a house a home - this will be out first year as parents and we're very excited smile

Dreamiesrcatopium Mon 23-Nov-15 19:26:07

We have an open door policy at Christmas and have friends and family popping in and out all the time. I'd say our fridge was what made our house our home! We're well known for always feeding everyone who walks through the door, a mince pie and a mulled wine is the minimum you will receive at chez dreamies at Christmas time.

Maplessglobe Mon 23-Nov-15 19:41:02

brandnew that's beautiful.

For us, it's just family and the trappings of family. Although many important people have died in recent years, we're very lucky to have the DCs to share it with. Their homemade paper chains and funny, happy faces make it home.

CMOTDibbler Mon 23-Nov-15 19:49:24

Our little family and pets is what makes our home. And a truckload of fairy lights smile

ItsaTenfromSanta Mon 23-Nov-15 19:50:19

When everyone arrives home and we can close the door, light the fire and catch up on everyones day/week, that's when the house becomes a home

Maiyakat Mon 23-Nov-15 20:13:12

The photos on the wall, DD's artwork on the fridge, the Christmas tree with our random collection of decorations collected over the years

CheeseAtFourpence Mon 23-Nov-15 20:12:55

It's Christmas when I hang the stockings on the fireplace, we light the wood burner and hang fairy lights above. Add a snoring dog at our feet (or sat on our knee usually) and that's when the excitement of Christmas starts.

sealight123 Mon 23-Nov-15 20:25:01

I'd like to say my house is a home from the photos and nicknacks we've collected (we have a pretty mean fridge magnet collecton....woooooaaah) but what makes it a home is the mess.

The little fingermarks on the staircase and the fact there is always chocolate on something hahaha

bettythebuilder Mon 23-Nov-15 20:41:55

Our christmas tree makes our house feel like a home at christmas... we always have a real tree, it fills the whole house with a lovely pine smell. Over the years dh and I have been married we have bought decorations each year, and now we choose decorations each year with our daughter, often bought on holiday or a day out. The tree won't win any style awards but each year it means so much to us!

Wolfcub Mon 23-Nov-15 20:45:35

The people in it

Thecatknowsshesboss Mon 23-Nov-15 21:02:10

Me and DH having a baileys and the cat "helping" us to wrap Christmas presents on Christmas Eve, by sitting on the wrapping paper and chasing the ribbon.

sallyst123 Mon 23-Nov-15 21:17:30

Other than the people in itsmile my kitchen & the yummy smells after an afternoon of baking, always makes me smile smile
