Lidl have asked us to find out Mumsnetters' favourite family-friendly recipes.

They'd like to see what great family-friendly recipes Mumsnetters can come up with when faced with an ingredients challenge. Smile

Maybe you rate yourself as the best baker never to have appeared on GBBO, or perhaps your pasta sauces or casseroles are the stuff of local legend?

We'd like you to choose from one of two baskets of ingredients - sweet or savoury - all of which are available at Lidl, and then come up with a recipe you'd make using all (or most) of the ingredients in that basket.

You can add in any normal store cupboard staples too (within reason).

Sweet basket - Apples, Chocolate, Butter, Pastry, Eggs, Double cream

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

Everyone who posts their recipe on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where 5 Mumsnetters will each win a £50 Lidl voucher.

thanks and good luck!

I would slice the potatoes & onions and crush the garlic, layer them with grated cheese and cream and bake (ie kind of dauphinose style pots).

Chope celery into finger lengths, half tomatoes, stick in a dish with chicken on top (assuming thighs/breasts/pieces of some sort?) and a splash of white wine and stick that in the oven too.

Plus some frozen peas.

Followed by some Mr Choc ;)

I would make a creamy chicken soup.

Fry off chicken, garlic tomatoes and celery add the potatoes and boil for a couple of hours. Blend it all down and stir through cream.

Stew the apples, mash and cool.
line a tart/flan tin with the pastry and blind bake but not till fully cooked.
Beat the eggs, mix with cream and apple mixture. Sweeten to taste. Add either a little nutmeg or cinnamon.
Bake till the filling is lightly set.

Savoury:

Skin and chop the tomatoes, put them in the slow cooker with the chicken (breasts I hope!) squish up the garlic and add that along with finely sliced celery. Add a smidgen of mild chilli powder from the cupboard, or paprika instead if you have it.

Cook on low for 6 then shred the chicken with forks and add some cream. (Off the heat so it doesn't curdle)

Serve with the potatoes either mashed with plenty of butter, or as jacket spuds with the creamy shredded chicken as a topping.

Fry the chicken with an onion and then when browned, add the garlic.
In the meantime, slice the potatoes and boil in salted water.
Once the chicken is cooked, add the celery, soften for a few minutes then add the double cream and a chicken stock cube and simmer for a few minutes.
Place the chicken, cream etc into an oven proof dish.
Spread the cooked sliced potatoes on to the chicken and cream then add a few slices of the tomatoes on top of the potatoes.
Bake in a hot oven until golden.

Sweet for me too. Apple and chocolate tarte tatin

Basket: apples, chocolate, butter, pastry, eggs, double cream

Peel and chop apples
Melt butter in oven and hob proof pan. Then add sugar and caramelise.
Put in apples, swish about briefly to cover all sides and leave cooking for a few mins.
Take off heat, and grate very dark chocolate over the apple/caramel mix.

Leave to cool a bit, then tuck rolled-out round of puff pasty over the mix, and place in oven.
While tatin cooks, make custard using the yolks of the eggs whisked with sugar and cornflour, and vanilla added. Pour into this the double cream, heated up, and whisk hard. Then pour the mix back into the cream saucepan, and whisk over a gentle heat.

Sweet basket - Apples, Chocolate, Butter, Pastry, Eggs, Double cream

I would make an egg custard tart with the pastry, egg and half of the double cream and a little milk to prevent the custard from becoming too rich, adding plenty of nutmeg. Then peel and cut the apples into smallish pieces, and zap in the microwave until soft (adding sugar if they are cooking apples). Melt the chocolate and stir in the remaining double cream to make a chocolate sauce. serve the egg custard tart cold with the stewed apples and chocolate sauce.

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

Fry off the chicken, garlic and celery and an onion. Chop the potatoes and add. Finely chop the tomatoes and add, and add a good few table spoons of curry paste. Stir in a little double cream to taste.

Savoury.
Id do a pasta sauce using fried off garlic, chicken and tomatoes sauce. Normally id add cheese for comfort but a slosh of cream would work well.
For DS I'd add it to pasta but DD's a funny old thing and would have it over potatoes instead!

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

Cube the chicken.
Mash the garlic, add salt and fresh ground pepper, pinch of chilli powder and a dash of double cream creating a marinade.
Marinade the chicken for at least 30min.
Cut potatoes into wedges, add salt, pepper and a bit of oil olive or goose fat and put into roast.
Once almost ready add tomatoes cut in half), chopped celery and chopped peppers (if possible) and put back into the oven.
Preheat heavy bottom frying pan and fry the chicken for 10-15 minutes or until tender.
Serve with roasted potatoes and the rest of roasted veggies.

Savoury. Casserole with the chicken and veggies. Serve with hassleback potatoes. Cream is tricky but I would keep that back for dessert with a nice pie or crumble! Good hearty food.

Upside down apple tarte

Melt butter in a frying pan and add in 2 table spoons of sugar, watch closely and keep little ones a good distance while the butter caramelises
Add thinly sliced apples quickly, in a nice fan pattern.
Turn on oven at around 200 degrees.
Roll out pastry and carefully drape over the apples, trimming away the excess with a sharp knife.

Put the whole pan in the oven for 15 minutes.

In the mean time grate the chocolate.

Once the pastry is cooked, take the pan out of the oven and place a plate over the top.

Very quickly and very very carefully flip the pan over so the apples are facing up. You might want to cover your arm with a tea towel because the caramel is very hot!

Finally, sprinkle over your chocolate and enjoy warm with a generous spoonful of double cream!

Sweet-

Press the pastry into a tart tin or dish. Line with baking paper and then put stones ontop and bake for 10-15 minutes.

Meanwhile whip the cream to form stif peaks.
Melt the chocolate in a bowl over boiling water along with butter and icing sugar. Once cooled slightly add this to the whipped cream.

Once the pastry is cooked, take it out of the oven, remove stones and allow it to cool.

Once cool too the chocolate mixture into the tart and put in the fridge.

Grease a baking tray and put sliced apples along with a sorinkle of brown sugar. Pop in the oven until the apple just start to brown and the sugar caramelises. Decorate your chocolate tart with the apples and then enjoy!

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream
I would mix the garlic with some butter and put it under the skin of the chicken and roast it. In the same roasting tin I would have the potatoes, celery and tomatoes so they could get cooked at the same time.
I would make a sauce with the cream and some black peppercorns.

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double Cream

I would make a spicy tomato sauce by crushing the garlic into blended tomatoes and celery, seasoned with salt, pepper, a bit of sugar and paprika and chilli from the cupboard. A few tablespoons of double cream at the end.

Chop the potatoes into little cubes, and roast until crispy with sea salt and olive oil.

I'd fry the chicken breasts on a griddle pan, marinated in a bit of harissa, then chuck in whatever veggies I had to hand to roast with the potatoes.

Voila, deconstructed patatas bravas with griddle pan chicken and roasted veg.

Hungry for dinner food but it's brunch time now...

Savoury basket - Potatoes, Celery, Garlic, Chicken, Tomatoes, Double cream

Peel and slice potatoes. Rub oven dish with clove of garlic (for the merest hint of garlic) place potatoes in the oven-dish and add salt, pepper and the double cream as well as a few table spoons of stock (to water the cream down a bit). Bake in oven on 200C for about an hour (put some tin foil over the top if it brown too much) = basic Pommes Dauphinoise recipe= very good.

Chop the chicken into pieces and season, brown them in some oil or butter and set aside. Fry some onion and garlic in some oil and finely sliced celery. Add the chopped tomato, half a cup of vegetable stock and add the chicken pieces. leave to simmer for 45 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Serve the creamy potatoes and chicken in tomato sauce together.
