We've been asked by the team at MoneySuperMarket to find out about the weirdest things Mumsnetters have found when moving in to a new home, which the previous owners or tenants left behind.

This is sort of the other way round as in we left the item-I am still embarrassed for my 14 year old self thinking about this!
My mum used to hang her range of aprons on a hook behind the kitchen door (you couldn't see them when the door was open wide-there for easy to miss in a house move)
We sold our house to a new family to the area, turned out that the oldest son was in the same class as me at school.
He appeared at school one day with a 'You left this in your house' and handed over, in a full chemistry class, a novelty apron that had been given to my mum as a 'joke' present. It was one of those naked curvy woman aprons with fig leaves in appropriate places -cringe!

Not weird, but I found them to be wonderful...

A wonderful old fashioned mixing bowl like the Mason Cash ones. I don't know if it is that make and it's very rough so likely to have been a second regardless. I still have it almost 32 years later and I love it.
Also a vintage (antique) jam dish like this. It got chipped when I moved house though :( but I still love it!
I also found an old stone ginger beer bottle complete with original screw stopper.

I moved into a house previously owned by a retired tailor and found loads of trouser templates hanging from the wall in the loft. Never took them down because they were rather lovely, though I did get in touch and ask if he wanted them back.

We found a random large coin/medallion when we moved into a house when I was a child. It was bigger than my hand! We didn't have any contact with the previous tenants so had no way of getting it back to them. I used to gaze at it as a child imagining it was part of some treasure chest, but no idea what's become of it now.

A new build so it was completely empty, except for a book of first class stamps left on the windowsill. I was about that!

in my house I found:-

dirty underwear under the floorboards
dead mice under the floorboards
pair of glasses under the floorboards
a book of info about atomic bombs in the wardrobes
50 old cans of paint 1/4 gone from each
sachets of cat food on top of the kitchen cupboards (neighbours said they never had cats!)

I am still in the process of finding things as im still pulling the house apart....

In our last house we found a toilet cistern sitting on the floor of the attic bedroom.......still attached to the facilities in the bathroom below and activated by means of a string that dangled down through floor/ceiling enabling the person lying in bed to hear the flushing toilet whenever it was used

At a previous house the vendor had left 57 - yes fifty seven - pieces of cheap, crappy furniture that he couldn't be bothered to remove......oh and dozens of empty loo roll tubes decorating the shelf in the bathroom

Here we found a safe in the cellar.....unfortunately empty!

The random switches that took us years to find out what they did. One switch in a bedroom located at floor level where the sockets would be, turned the wall lights on and off in the living room.

Back in 2000 so a little before the internet was completely swamped with pornography - a VHS tape in the wardrobe. Golden showers + OAP's + gimp suits. It was so disgusting we had to watch it twice for the shock value!

House was only built in 1987, so i didn't expect to have anything to add to this thread. Taking the ensuite apart, turned up an Harris tweed jacket in an amazingly loud tweed check. Its too good to throw out, would be perfect for someone playing the villein,mor even a golfer, in a whodunnit from the golden age. If only we knew some AmDram people. Sigh.

Hundreds of German porn films stacked in the loft. DH didn't tell me until he'd already chucked them all into the skip - most disappointed!

We found the gap around the toilet waste pipe where it goes through the wall to be stuffed with loo paper and covered in sealant... not the best DIY method I've ever seen!

A zimmer frame in the garage, plus some really old savings books from Midlands bank.

In the first house I purchased, when I removed the fitted wardrobes in the box room, I found a letter which was obviously from the son to his Mum, apologising for what he had done, asking her forgiveness and saying that he knew his Dad would never forgive him but that he hoped she could. It was so sad. I always wonder if she hid it there from her husband, and if she ever wrote back, or they reconciled. This was 15 years ago now.

With this house, there was very little, and nothing all that interesting. Although my parents old house, when they had to lift the floorboards, found all the water pipes where held in place with carefully constructed lego supports. The also found a lot of pottery burried in the garden, not old stuff, but things from BHS that looked perfectly servicable. In total, they found 4 full place settings, and couldn't work out why they were in the various flowerbeds...

In one rented house, a mahosive pile of 'mens' mags in a cupboard.

Another house, the window was held in with newspaper which had been painted over. It blew out in a storm.

Another house, they took the light fittings, grill pan and some door handles with them - so not leaving at all!

A jewellery box full of someone's extracted teeth! The little ballerina still span round and played music when I opened it.

We found a really big old suitcase. We opened it and found a creepy doll on top of a really ugly old pair of curtains and underneath were some photo negatives of a man standing on a beach.

I was disappointed. I was hoping the suitcase would be stuffed full of cash.

Not weird as such but we bought our first home of an elderly man who was going into sheltered housing. He was a retired carpenter, my dh is a carpenter too. When we moved in he left a drawer full of old tools, things you couldn't even buy nowadays, some of which my dh is still using.

Lightbulbs bigger than a man's head. Loads of them.

Previous house was a beautiful old original Victorian fireplace choc full of toe nail clippings. A serious collection which must have taken years of dedication to compile.

We bought a very run down house that had belonged to a 94 year old lady who had lived there her whole life from birth. On the day we Got the keys we walked in to find everything exactly as she had left it. Washing up in the sink, clothes in the drawers, her Pjamas tucked under the pillow on her bed. Literally, the ladies entire life.

I called the solicitor dealing with it and she said the lady had no family and so no one had bothered to box up her things. I was incredibly emotional about it, and felt a huge responsibility to do the right thing by the lady. We put together a memory box of things that had seemed to be important to her (newspaper clippings, her glasses, hair clippings and little photos) and put it into a false wall we were creating in one of the upstairs rooms.

The rest we donated to charity and some amazing clothes to the local theatre company. I hope we did the right thing, it was a massive shock and was incredibly sad
