The team at Hobbycraft would like to hear about the Halloween arts and crafts activities you’ll be doing with your DCs this year.

Hobbycraft say “As parents ourselves we know what a challenge it can be to keep the kids entertained during the holidays and on a budget. So, for the sake of parents everywhere who are in need of inspiration, we’d love to know you’ll be making with the kids for Halloween”.

So, what crafty spooky Halloween projects will you be doing this year? Do your DCs dress up? And if they do, do you make their costumes? Maybe you paint their faces? Perhaps you bake Halloween treats together?
Whatever you and your DCs will be making this Halloween, Hobbycraft would love to hear about it.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw, where three Mumsnetters will each receive a £100 Hobbycraft voucher.
Please note your comments may be included on Hobbycraft's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

I will be avoiding Halloween, especially where my children are involved. The gruesome halloween products and shop displays in most shops are hideous. DD1 has nightmares as it is, without filling her mind with all that. [grumpy kill-joy emoticon]

I make halloween treats - last year tunnocks teacakes with liquorice legs and marshmallow eyes made fab spiders. Roasted pumpkin soup, and squid ink spaghetti with a hot dog squid on top are popular spooky dinners

We want to try and make banana ghosts! We always carve a pumpkin. My 4yo draws on the face and I cut it out to her design.
We generally pick a costume out of her costume box, but this is her first year trick or treating so we have bought her a little witch costume and spider costume.
I would like to bake and buy some quick and easy decorating supplies for biscuits or cupcakes.

I don't care much for Halloween. The kids will dress up for the school disco, and I'll have some sweets ready to stop trick or treaters throwing eggs at the windows Sad

It's not a day I look forward to or enjoy. I'm too old.

We're having a family fancy dress party for the one and only child (a DS) in our extended family. Being the only child will mean he'll get a lot of attention and luckily he has lots of childish playful aunts and grandparents to play with.

We've got the costumes ready ahead of time (no scary costumes, just previous fancy dress items) but during the party we'll paint faces and play party games. We'll have a carved pumkin and we'll be making pumpkin biscuits to decorate with faces too.

Dolally pumpkins are a pound in the big 4 and you can get a fair amount of food from them; soup, a pie and roasted seeds!

Although you're right about the mess!

We love a bit of pumpkin carving in this house! The first one is DD's, she was 11 last year so this is all her own work, and the dragon one is mine.

DH spent yesterday making a fantastic pair of Maleficent horns from cardboard and electrical tape as DD is being teenage Maleficent this year. Grin

we will be carving a pumpkin, baking some spooky bat & ghost cookies , creating green slime and wriggly worm messy play and doing lots of arts and crafts to decorate the home for Halloween - spiders with egg cartons & pipe cleaners, a hanging cardboard pumpkin bunting and spooky ghosts made out of apparat plates and toilet roll . And we will also be dressing up and trick or treating

We'll be carving a few pumpkins and hanging loads of decorations. Got a scary pizza planned, some pumpkin soup and breadsticks and carrots with dips. Got a brain jelly mould too this year so going to fill it with plastic flies and spiders and get the kids to delve in and find as many as they can for a treat. I've planned a craft table with mini gourds for painting/glittering/sequining and some recycling and pipe cleaners for their parents to take home to save my bin space some creepy monster making. Also going to do wrap the mummy (with loo roll) as they are at the right age for that kind of 'skill' (3yo). They will all be dressing up and I can face paint anyone who wants it and have also got some green hair spray this year!

We have a Halloween party followed by trick or treating - lots of good old gruesome games and food - can't beat a chopped finger sandwich! We also make spooky cakes to give out to trick or treaters and have a lovely crafty day making decorations. One of our favourites is the jelly snakes made from straws

All three kids (including 23 month old DS) are having a friend over for a day during half term. I'm planning a spooky scavenger hunt for the older ones culminating in finding the lunch table which will be decorated.

The hunt will include finding things (I'll be hiding some treats) and building some things (like zombie traps out of their existing toys). The toddlers will do some painting.

I'm excited Grin

Ooh I posted this on another rainy day thread today!

I am going to make Halloween spooky houses with my DC this week.

  1. Using cereal boxes, draw on and cut out doors/windows using craft knife (I leave the windows with the flappy bits left on).

  1. Get DC to paint/decorate it (we're using glow in the dark paint as well for extra eerie effect).

  1. Roughly trace the windows/doors in pencil onto a piece of paper the same size as the box, get DC to draw ghosts/vampires/etc at each window, then glue the sheet of paper inside (so that when you look through the windows/doors you can see the scary character inside).

  1. Finish with cheap LED candle light to put inside the cereal box/house to make it look extra spooky!

  1. Done - we're going to put ours at the front window (slim enough box to fit on the window ledge)

I'm still planning Halloween (only 5&3 years here and the last 2 halloweens dd has managed to be poorly) but we already have costumes, I will paint their faces and I'm trying to make dd a warm red hooded cape to wear as ds wants to repeat their outfits from last year on bonfire night (red riding hood and the big bad wolf) since he didn't get to do it! We will bake ghost biscuits and a red velvet cupcakes. I'm also thinking of Halloween themed stained glass windows (made with coloured tissue paper) for rainy days, collecting spiders webs on black paper whilst they are covered in dew. If it's really rainy maybe even weaving a spider nest themselves with embroidery thread/wool.
I will be having my niece a couple of days so we will be making bread too - there could be a prize for the scariest looking bread roll!

We focus on edibles, nothing better than eating the fruits of your labours! Homemade jelly worms, meringue ghosts, etc! We will also be using orange crepe paper to decorate a window with 'pumpkin' shapes... I prefer high impact, low mess crafts!

We will carve a pumpkin to put outside our front door.

(But as soon as the last of our friends-with-dc have called, the candle's going out and the pumpkin's coming in. Bah humbug!)

We always do a pumpkin, and often make Halloween crafts. Last year we made witches on broomsticks using my daughters footprints - we painted her feet green and then created the pictures.

We also created spiders in webs. We rolled conkers in orange and green paint to create the background and drew a web over that. Two black handprints together created the spiders and googly eyes finished it off Smile
