Tell The National Lottery what you’d do with a fantasy £20,000 - £250 voucher prize draw! NOW CLOSED

You may have heard recently that The National Lottery's Lotto game is changing this autumn and is introducing a new Raffle where 50 players will win £20,000 in each draw. To celebrate this, The National Lottery have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters would do with (a fantasy) £20,000.

Here's what The National Lottery say: "As of 5th October, Lotto is changing, offering more ways to win more money. The prize for matching three numbers will be increased from £10 to £25, the jackpots will be bigger (£2.5million on Wednesday and £5million on Saturdays) and there's a new raffle where 50 players will win a guaranteed £20,000 each draw. Tickets for the new game go on sale on 3rd October and cost £2 per line. We would love to hear about how Mumsnetters would spend £20,000 if they were to win the raffle prize!"

So what would you do if you were to win £20,000? Would you go on a huge spending spree, or would you be more careful with your winnings and put it aside for a rainy day?

What have you always wanted to do, but have never managed to justify the cost of? Dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant? Buy a piece of designer jewellery? Maybe you'd splash it all on a round the world holiday? Or perhaps you'd save it to make life easier for you and your DCs if they decide to go to university? Or would you take the opportunity to clear (some) debts or pay off a chunk of the mortgage?

Whatever it is, The National Lottery would love to hear about it.

Everyone who shares their thoughts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Down payment on our dream house. That would use the whole thing up.

I would love to spend it on a really big holiday, Disney and American road trip.
Would probably put it towards buying our forever house.

We would use some of it to take us all on a dream holiday to Disneyland. Then we would put some into savings and use the rest to put down a deposit for a newer car for dp.
How nice , we no longer do the lottery after never winning even ten pounds. I have always said it should make more smaller prize winners.

I'd spend £10k on a holiday, then put the rest in a rainy day account.

Boring things- get the car fixed, pay off a couple of debts, put some away for the DDs.

I'd use it to TTC (need a fertility clinic to do that thanks to a couple of minor complications, and simply cannot afford to do that) and the rest would go to house-moving costs; moving van, new furniture and the costs of selling up and transferring the mortgage etc.

I'd use it to buy DS1 a physiotherapy vest from America, no more wars over physio would be grand! The rest I'd use to get someone in to do up the house room by room.

What ever was left I'd persuade DP to elope to Gretna Green and get hitched over a weekend Wink

Torn between saving for property purchase or just a fab daily holiday - which would be 10k gone - haven't had a holiday since 09, and the kids deserve it, it's been a 'challenging' 3 years for all!

We'd spend it on ivf to try and give dd the sibling she's desperate for. £20,000 should be enough for 3 goes!

I'd use it to get the builders in and sort out our utility room, which is, frankly, a ghastly mess. We've been in the house 15 years and it was a ghastly mess (uneven or flaking pasterwork, peeling paper behind the loo) when we moved in, but we've been gradually fixing everything else. Just this left, now, and it's a biggy.

Be nice if we could finally fix it.

Much needed extension and a holiday.

I'd use half of it to clear credit card and loans - would be great to be debt free!!!
The other half I would use to sort out our driveway (possibly block pave or similar) as currently it is gravel which is rapidly thinning with loads of weeds growing through...not a good look!

I think after the usual dullness of settling a few debts we'd be off on a dream holiday.

DP has always wanted to drive from Vancouver down the West Coast and in to visit Seattle and Portland before heading down to San Francisco. So with £20k we'd make that our honeymoon.

Definitely a big tour around America. I would hire a motor home and spend the summer travelling wherever we liked, my boys would love it and would be an amazing experience for them. If I won the lottery it would be the first thing we would do Grin

Do this house up as we have to sell it but parts of it need a lot of doing up, and we cant afford it.

I would spend £12000 paying off our debts which would mean we cold actually afford to start repaying the mortgage! With the £8000 that would be left I would pay £6000 to give dd the operation she needs to be able to hear which the nhs won't do :(

Ooh I like this idea!

We haven't managed to travel anywhere near as much as we'd like yet, so I'd use a chunk of it to take our teenage dds to New York, which is their dream destination. I suspect we'd spend a fair bit of it on cheesecake whilst there!

With the rest, we'd put it towards getting the loft converted in order to add an extra bathroom (with two teenager girls, one bathroom can be a bit of a problem!) and a small library room for me to fill with lots of lovely new books.

oh and the £2k would take us on a reasonable holiday..

I'd put half into savings for my daughter for when she's older for funding a new car or university etc.

The rest I would use to redecorate and update the house a bit and to have a lovely, worry free Christmas with lots of nice presents and yummy food for all the family!

I'd also give my in-laws a couple of thousand to help their business get off the ground as it's always been my mother in law's dream to have her own business and I'd love to see her have something she wants for a change as she's always scrimping and saving to help others :)

Little presents for everyone.

And it would go a long way in South Sudan, training midwives, where I'm going next month.

With £20,000, we would get a nice second hand estate car as our last car went to scrap yard. Have a nice holiday, as we haven't been away for 10 years. Any money left would spruce up our kitchen, as we still have the same units from when we moved in 22 years ago!

I've always wanted to go to the Cayman Islands, so I'd splash out on a luxury holiday for my family and then probably save the rest for my children (and possibly a gorgeous pair of shoes and a handbag for me!)

Finnish BBQ hut without question!
And I'd take the kids on holiday to Cuba.
Off to dream......
