As part of Estée Lauder's Drops of Advice campaign, they've asked us to find out about the best pearls of beauty wisdom you've ever received - what were they and who were they from? What wonders has the advice done for your skin/hair/nails/whatever?! If you had to give a younger version of yourself some beauty advice, what would it be? It could be something like 'get more sleep'(!) or something more elaborate involving slapping the contents of your kitchen cupboard on your face in a homemade face pack?! Either way, please do share!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win 1 of 15 bottles of Advanced Night Repair (30ml, RRP £41). That's a lot of prizes up for grabs! Please note that you have to be aged 18+ years to take part in the prize draw.

Mumsnet is promoting this sponsored discussion thread on behalf of Estée Lauder. The thread will be open until Friday 27th April, when we will close it, do the prize draw and notify the winners on that day. The winners' details will then be sent to Estée Lauder so the prizes can be sent out. Please only add your comments if you're happy for us to pass on your details to Estée Lauder in the event that you win the prize draw. We will only pass on the prize winners' details, and these will only be used for the purposes of sending out the prizes.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

PS If you don't win this one then the folks at Estée Lauder are also running a 'Drops of Advice' competition on where you have an additional chance to win a product and a night in a 5* hotel for two. For more information please visit Terms apply. Closing date 29/12/2012.

Look after your neck and buy the best cream possible for it, it will look old way before your face does and drag the rest of your looks down with it! (from my mum) x

Voidka Mon 23-Apr-12 13:26:33

My Nan always told me to keep your hands and lips soft.

mamij Mon 23-Apr-12 13:30:23

Cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day.

And put socks on after moisturising your feet at night. They'll be lovely and soft in the morning.

Firawla Mon 23-Apr-12 13:32:23

always moisturise, drink plenty of water and eat healthily

I was in an accident and was left with a horrible burn on my leg. I was advised to burst a vitamin e vitamin capsule every day and rub it on the wound (once heeled) to prevent it from scaring. It worked! Ever since then, I've used them on my face and I'm sure my skin is so much better and more evenly coloured.

So, Vitamin E (plus drink lots of water) was the best advice I've ever been given.

stop drinking

does wonders for your skin

sairygamp Mon 23-Apr-12 14:53:50

And smoking grin

After curling your lashes, apply a fine coat of waterproof mascara before your usual mascara.

Normal mascara is water-based and causes the curl to drop (same as if you had a ringlet and put water on it, it would droop). The coating of waterproof mascara (oil based) keeps the curl firm.

Voilá! Curled lashes all day long.

Can I have another?

Tuck your tongue into the roof of your mouth when posing for a photo - it tightens the jaw and makes a double chin (or hint of) lessen.

Do I sound really vain? hmm grin

TheRhubarb Mon 23-Apr-12 15:04:22

Or just get really really pissed before looking in the mirror as then you'll alwasy look beautiful!

NewMatic Mon 23-Apr-12 15:05:18

my best ever discovery is not just getting your eyebrows shaped professionally( objective and better) but TINTED

omg "groomed" all doen in seconds

ChasedByBees Mon 23-Apr-12 15:05:31

Always use sunscreen and wear a hat or cover up in the sun. Everything in moderation: food, alcohol, partying can all take a toll. Also, drink lots of water.

HamburgerHelper Mon 23-Apr-12 15:08:14

Be well-groomed. Tidy brows, clean nails, styled hair, moisturised skin, etc.

NewMatic Mon 23-Apr-12 15:09:37

dont eat crap

dont eat generally tbh

StellaAndFries Mon 23-Apr-12 15:11:17

I have twenty minutes each evening where I sit and relax and slowly take all of my make up off and cleanse, tone and moisturise. I use the time to relax as well as pamper myself and it really helps me to unwind before bed.

In the mornings I cleanse in the shower, I keep a foaming cleanser in there so that I'm never tempted to just use soap, then I can just get out and slap some moisturiser on and then i'm ready to start the day.

NewMatic Mon 23-Apr-12 15:12:13

read in the bath

clean beautiful AND clever

champagnesuperdupernova Mon 23-Apr-12 15:17:05

If you have a limited time to get ready, and you think you might need to wash your hair, wash it. You will spend your whole evening worrying about whether it is greasy or not, no matter how much time you spent putting slap makeup on to detract attention from it.

Less is more - tinted moisturiser/mascara/clear lip gloss/maybe a bit of blush.

NewMatic Mon 23-Apr-12 15:17:52

never skimp on foundation.

champagnesuperdupernova Mon 23-Apr-12 15:18:04

LOl at newmatic - you can never be too rich or too thin, innit? grin

Avoid the sun - from my nan who has lovely skin at 72

Moisturise neck as well as face - from my nan also

Do home glycolic acid peels - from an mnetter!

Birthhippy9 Mon 23-Apr-12 15:23:17

My grandmother gave me this pearl of wisdom "Girl be glad for what you've been given and smile...everyone looks beautiful with their smile!"

Queenmarigold Mon 23-Apr-12 15:29:29

Dont' lose too much weight. Make you wrinkly.

well that's my excuse for being fat

zipzap Mon 23-Apr-12 15:43:09

Save time by putting nail varnish on your toe nails before you shower; the nail varnish will have dried by the time you come out and you will be safe to wear socks/tights/shoes etc, instead of standing around waiting and trying to avoid getting it on the carpet.

My mum has cleansed with a creamy cleanser, splashed water on instead of toner and moisturised religiously since she was a teenager, she is now in her late 70s and her skin looks more like someone in her 50s-60s

zipzap Mon 23-Apr-12 15:44:46

oh and find a good lipstick colour that really suits you that is a 'lip' colour rather than a definite red or pink or orange.

Keep one in your handbag, one by the front door, one in the car and one in your desk so that you always have a lipstick to hand that will give your face an instant 'groomed' look when you put it on, and won't clash with whatever you're wearing.

Combine this with learning how to put lipstick on without needing to look in the mirror and you'll always be able to put lipstick on at a moment's notice and give yourself a quick pick me up.

"A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely." Roald Dahl

Best beauty advice ever.
