I am currently setting up a new school in Bexley for children aged 11 - 16 who are on the Autistic Spectrum. Our school will also focus on helping children recover from bullying.

If your are interested in sending your child here, please contact me and I will send you further details of our aims and methods of teaching.

Our first intake in Sep 11' will be for children in year 7. Depending on ability and circumstances (severely bullied or unable to cope in Mainstream) older or younger children maybe able to start at this time also.

The school will be Government funded and completely free for all children with or without diagnosis or statements.

I can understand the need for such a school but it seems rather rushed and unplanned.

As a parent, I'd be concerned about the lack of detail on the website, especially regarding location and facilities. Will the school be equipped with specialist classrooms for teaching and leisure facilities? What arrangements are there for therapies and teaching life skills and social skills? Will there be support from speech and language therapists and occupational therapists on site? What is the behaviour policy and how will staff cope with meltdowns?

It's not the type of school DS would thrive in, as he gets anxious during any lessons related to performing arts so the emphasis on drama and dance wouldn't be appropriate for him. I know quite a few families with HFA in my local area and it's not the type of school that would appeal to any of them tbh.

Answer to springinmystep's questions/comments...

There is no information on our website because we have not got a premises for our school yet. Yes, the classrooms will be specially equipped (this should be explained on our website). We plan to integrate development therapies throughout the school day for all pupils and life skills will be a major part of the curriculum. Support by way of SLT and OTs will be something that will very much be incorporated and our school will have a mentor to deal with meltdowns in a safe area within the school. Our behaviour policy will mirror our belief that disrespectful, agressive or bullying behaviours will not be tolerated in any way.

As Art, Drama and Music are subjects that do not interest your child, I would agree that our school would not be appropriate for him. However, we do know of many children with ASD/Asperger's that enjoy these subjects and we are aware of the huge benificial impact they can have on low self-esteem (which most bullied children have).

Could you please explain why you think our school is 'rushed and unplanned'?
