Our SN area is not a substitute for expert advice. While many Mumsnetters have a specialist knowledge of special needs, if they post here they are posting as members, not experts. There are, however, lots of organisations that can help - some suggestions are listed here. If you've come across an organisation that you've found helpful, please tell us. Go to Special needs chat, Parents with disabilities, SN teens, SN legal, SN children, SN recommendations.

Not sure if anyone can help but this is just an outpouring.

My son is eight. Nine in the spring. He's a happy little chap, but just has no aptitude for anything to do with school. We've got him in to a private school for children with special learning needs but after three years, he can just about write a small number of very short words with a great deal of prompting. He can count to about 20 (missing out the odd number). He can read a very small number of sight words and can sound out short words. He can hardly draw and has very little sporting ability. His speech is also pretty poor. He basically likes to watch TV and play fight - spys, knights, aliens, spacemen sort of games. He will engage with some boardgames but not for an extended period. He will sometimes sit on his bed and happily build basic lego ships. Running round a field or building a dam on a stream would be right up his street. But that's it.

He has no interest in learning and his very basic homework is a struggle. We really have to take a deep breath and get ready for a massive fight every time we sit down to do a work sheet. Pens go flying, books are thrown across the room, he cries and wriggles on the floor rather than sit down. We try praise, rewards, threats. Everything. But still every single time it's a fight. It would be so easy to give up and just turn the TV on and leave him - but we are well aware that achieves nothing apart from a quiet life.

We've had him assessed for dyslexia and dyspraxia which is why he is now at at a (very good) special school, but they are struggling with him as he is not responding to the techniques they use. He's recently been assessed for ADD/ADHD as well and the doctors are not sure if that is the problem as he can follow narrative quite well and is happy to watch full length films if we would let him.

So we are at a loss to know what to do. We are not sure if his current school will keep him beyond next year and have no idea what to do next.

You read so many posts about dyslexia or ADHD where parents focus on ability in maths or creativity but that's not the case with us. My son just struggles with everything.

If you've experienced anything similar, we'd love to hear what you did or how things turned out.

Thanks for reading.

Move this post to the SN CHAT or SN CHILDREN. The SEN EDUCATION board is very quiet.

Marking my place. Will post something soon.
