Asperger friendly secondary schools in East Sussex

Are there any SECONDARY SCHOOLS which parents can recommend in East Sussex for ASPERGERS?

We need to choose a secondary school this autumn for our son to start in Sept 2014. We are not sure whether to go for one which is smaller in size, or one which has a special ASD unit.

We would love to hear from other parents of Aspergers children who have experience of secondary schools in this area.

We are prepared to move house to be near one which is highly recommended.

Our son was only diagnosed at the end of last year and does not have a statement - should we try and get one?

If there is anyone reading this that lives around the Uckfield/Lewes area and the surrounding areas who can share their experiences of local secondary schools, we'd be most grateful to hear from you.

Thanks so much for reading this

Hello! If you can pay to go privately then Frewen college in Northiam is very well regarded. If you cannot pay privately may I suggest you scrub East Sussex right off your list because the SEN provision in the area is truly horrendous. After 6 long years we moved away from Heathfield (nice place, small town mentality) "we don't have kids like that here" & up to Surrey where my daughters difficulties were instantly spotted & supported & she was diagnosed within months, something East Sussex were not capable of doing! My eldest daughter used to go to Heathfield CC btw which officially has an autistic unit, but higher functioning kids don't spend much time there & stick out like a sore thumb. I now have girls at 2 secondary schools in Surrey, both of which really make the effort for ASD like my youngest, & kids with "traits" like my eldest. smile Feel free to PM me if you want more info. smile

Not sure about mainstream secondary schools in that area. If you can convince Sussex to pay, then I can endorse Frewen College. My son goes there and has come on leaps and bounds. It is a school for children with dyslexia, but my DS has ASD, and I would suggest that all his friendship group are somewhere on the spectrum too, so they are well used to it all.

If I were you, I would try and start an assessment for a statement, if only from the point of view that, should you find a MS school, they would then have no excuses about providing your son with the help and support he needs to reach his potential.

If you'd like further info about Frewen, please feel free to ask away smile

Thank you both very much for taking the time and trouble to reply.
Sorry for the delay but I didn't realise that Mumsnet did not send an email alert when a message was added.
I agree about Heathfield - it is just too large and our son would not be "severe" enough to go into the unit and would therefore not benefit hugely by the school having it!
At the moment we can't get a statement as our son is settled in his small primary school and is as good as gold there (a different boy at home!!) and isn't struggling too much educationally. I am currently trying to get him upgraded to School Action Plus though on emotional/friendship/social grounds
However, I know he wll find the transition to secondary hugely difficult
It is good to hear about Frewen although it is too far away for us (even though it is in East sussex as I asked!) as my husband still has to go to work.
It would also be nice to hear about any schools which are on the borders of East Sussex but in Surrey, West Sussex or Kent
Pixiedust, would you be able to PM me with the details of the Surrey school your daughters go to, please?
I am most grateful for your help
thank you so much

Hi BigBird
It was great to hear from you - thanks for your message.
I would really love to hear more about Northease Manor if you have any personal experience of it.
We did actually go to visit it a couple of weeks ago.We didn't see the Head and a lot of exams were going on so we couldn't see as much as usual - we got a feel for it but nothing as as good as a review from a parent!
I am waiting to see the Ed Psych but there's no hope of getting a statement until our son flounders at mainstream secondary which I'd rather avoid.
Are there any bursaries at Northease do you know?
We are also going to see LVS at Hassocks next month - do you know anything about that one by any chance?
Sorry for all the questions but it would be so helpful if you can offer any more info
Many thanks

Hi, I highly recommend Northease. My child has developed and progressed soo much. One very happy child! There is some changes going on in September which will be interesting. The other thing, (I should expect is evident in most specialist schools) is friendship problems due to social misunderstandings. Nurturing in the areas of emotional and behavioral development has been extremely beneficial among the younger children. Education wise, excellent, intuitive and specialist professionals have tailored excellent access to the national curriculum for my individual child.I hope that helps.

DONT go near FREWEN College as since new head took over its terrible. my daughter was threatened with a knife yet it was ignored and bullying continued. SHE refused to go and I have had to get her another school. It really bad now. Beware its not as it seems.
