Our SN area is not a substitute for expert advice. While many Mumsnetters have a specialist knowledge of special needs, if they post here they are posting as members, not experts. There are, however, lots of organisations that can help - some suggestions are listed here. If you've come across an organisation that you've found helpful, please tell us. I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall....

Dd2 (8) has been 'sort of' diagnosed with Social Communication Disorder. I say, 'sort of' because the SALT that did her assessment did not specialise in this area, she dealt with speech problems due to nervous conditions like Selective Mutism. This was in June and I was told that I would have to wait until the new term in September to get the correct SALT to assess her. I am still waiting. I am constantly ringing the school and being fobbed off for one reason or another and I am at the end of my tether. She only has one 'friend', who is rather nasty to her and treats her pretty shabbily. I keep telling her she should try and find someone else to play with but she is strangely drawn to this girl. It breaks my heart to see her standing alone in the playground whilst this girl runs off with other children. I don't know what I expect anyone to say to me but I just wanted to get it off my chest and maybe realise I am not alone in this.

Hi Bomper

Could you make an appointment to see the SENCO and chase up the referral? SALTs usually have pretty shocking waiting lists though, so it might just be a delay. My DS has SCD as well, and is generally wandering around the playground by himself, it can be awful to watch, even though he says he is happy!

I hope you get to see someone soon, it's absolutely awful just waiting and not being able to do anything proactive - you're certainly not alone though!

Thanks for your response - it made me cry!! Just to hear that someone knows what it is like is a relief! Phoned the school on Friday, and asked to speak to the SENCO. I was told she was busy and would call me back - she never did sad. Will be chasing again Monday. I just worry that if we don't set something in motion soon she will be going to Secondary school totally unprepared.
