LOL at Baroness Warlock!

Thought Maria Hutchings very good and Baroness warnock a bit bumbling but had some good points to make. Felt that Lorraine and Phillip totally didn't get the issue and kept trying to make it into an attack on Warnock, saying it was her fault. V. pleased when Maria said 'forget about what has happened in the past we need to look at what is happening now'.

Does anyone know of any organisations campaigning on this issue? Or have contact details for Maria Hutchings? Feeling quite passionate about it.

Shocked by the statistics. 1.2 million special needs children in UK. If all were placed in SN units with 80 to a unit there would need to be 16,000 units built to educate the children.

I have 2 SN kids and they are in mainstream school, DS is doing very well in MS Dd1 is struggling but hopefully she will be statemented soon and be able to have a 121 so she will be ok.
I think if DS went to a SN school, it would hold him back IYKWIM.

will you pass on the details to me too HITC

It really frightens me that they think my dd's school should be closed and that they believe all those children there would be better placed in mainstream. It really is quite shocking. I would like to know how many MPS have children of their own WITH special needs and what their opinion is on the matter

It was saying mieow, that children with physical impairments SHOULD be in mainstream as there is no need for them to go to special as their learning needs arent any different (in alot of cases). I think it was a very important point that Maria made about ":life skills" my daughter is learning life skills which will help her fit into the community, not doing literacy hour etc which would be no use whatsoever to her

Im not focussing on educational skills anymore. Social skills are far more important. My DH suffered a serious brain injury and this left him with the inability to read and write. He runs his own sucessful business and copes really well in life because he is very social and is a peoples person. He doesnt need aceademic skills to get by.

What Maria Hutchings said really hit home with me. The class room environments in mainstream schools just are not geared up to suit all children, especially those with sensoy difficulties. Social and life skills are just IMO far more important skills to learn than reading and writing. J doesnt need to learn about Henry the 8th but he does need to learn how to interact with his peers in an appropriate way.

HITC, contact PACE which is now part of the Treehouse Trust so I suppose you'd go to www.treehouse.org.uk but PACE did have their own website.....

And I think thats right, but I do think that some children with physical disabilities also need the support of SN school. I am glad my DS is in MS as he is doing so well.

JM I agree entirely. This is what I phoned Radio 5 Live about last week.. and the point I sort of made.. in a very stumbling and crap way thanks to the Mad Trolley Woman trying to get my attention in the car park while I was talking!

My DS is getting along great so far in mainstrean despite his significant disability.. HOWEVER.. this I feel is entirely due to the fact that his social skills are very well developed, even though his language is extremely delayed. Social interaction is his forte.. it's true he has trouble with just about everything else and only loosely follows the curriculum with constant one to one attention; BUT he communicates with people in a way that verbal speech is only a small part of.. and loves everyone! So, this being the case, mainstream, for him is working at this point in his school career.

From what I am constantly hearing in these recent news reports and debates and from what I see myself (as a relief TA), children with any degree of social issues are the ones that struggle/suffer in mainstream. I am not saying that ALL of these children would require special education, but many would certainly benefit and for some it's a necessity IMO. I think each child with any degree of SN needs assessing on an individual basis with regard to appropriate schooling. To make sweeping generalisations which say 'all special needs children need to attend a special school' or 'all special needs children can have their needs accomodated in a mainstream environment' is a serious mistake which nagatively affects many children; not just those iwth SN but their mainstream classmates as well.

I am no Einstein and this is not rocket science.. but this seems like such a simple issue to me! Of course, like everything else, funding/money issues are no doubt heavily responsisble for decisions that are being made re inclusion.

SJ x

you can beat me down with a big stick with a nail in the end of it sleepyjesss, but your ds's school is brill, has a great reputation, has alot of experience. If you are a gobby Mom like us you get a statement and stuff here you need. that is the difference. Some people dont, spome people dont get access to the internet or whatever and know what they are entitled to in terms of support etc.
