Feeling Guilty about the after-school club

dd starts at hers tonight, only one day a week till 5.50 after school. i thought it would be good for her to have something to do after school for a change, but dh isdisagreeing with me saying she is too young and its all too much hassle (I will have to get the bus to get her) I think because she cant do other extra cirricular things it will be good for her to do this but his disagreement has made me feel guilty.

Am I being silly?

and PS what exactly DO they do at after school club?

Well, it's a bit late for your dh to be expressing doubts now isn't it, when you've set it all up?! She is young, I agree, and it will be a long day for her. But you can only give it a trial and see how it goes.

Suck it and see mate, you don't know till you try. I agree the idea of her having something to do after school one day a week is a good idea, but you won't know how it'll work out till you've given it a go.

This is a typical example of how my husband just nods and doesnt listen! I spoke to dd's escort who has son with special needs and she said to stop being silly and if she was NT she would go to after school activities, so why i am being so soft about it all. She also said tell your dh to shut up

Ellies SN School has an after Schools club once a week. Think it is for the older ones

The kids have a great time.

How many children go straight from School to Ballet, swimming, Brownies etc!! It's only the same thing.

Give it a go, she may love it!!

Fio..well at DD's they sing (to the tune of I Hear Thunder..).

"After School club.. After school club.. all join in.. all join in...

Let's begin.. Let's begin.."

And they make their own butties and eat them! And they always do a craft activity too.. with good quality equipment/supplies.. and a better adult/child ratio than in school.

DD loves it! (She is 6 - Y1 but attended last year too in YR)

She is 5 and in SN school, they have just started doing the after school club, equality and all that

Fio, things are good thanks. DS went back to school yesterday.. didn't want him to.. but he is fine, so I had to let him! I slept back in my bed last night (as opposed to on floor bext to him) as the tv/camera baby monitor arrived yesterday..

The meds don't seem to be making him too sleepy..

So all going well.. I just have to get my head around the fear of it happening again.. altho a copule of mums on here have made me feel better re: their stories of one-off fits.

I can see how you feel about everything SJ, I would feel the same. If you ever feel like meeting for coffee one of the mornings to vent I would more than oblige to catch the train Are you under a neurologist btw? i have to see one next week with dd....cackin it

Fio - I am sure she will love it! And if she doesn't, well, she doesn't have to keep going.

Know what you mean about the 'nodding without listening' .

Think it is great actually that the school are doing it.

Fio, re neurologist.. yes Dr. Pohl.. he visits the Mary Sheridan (development) Centre anually and we see him then. He is very good.

Meeting sounds good.. I still haven't been to a meet up! Did the Medway one go ahead? (Not that I could have gone at half term!!)

SJ, It IS Dr Pohl but we are seeing him at Guys as it takes too long to get an appointment at the Mary Sheridan Centre. Did your ds used to go to the pre-school there? dd did for about 6 months when we moved down here

Yes Fio.. DS did go the the pre-school!! When did your DD go? Ds went between Oct 2003 and July 2004.. although he came on transport.. but I was often in and out of there..

she went between April 2004 until July 2004, so only 3 months durr. I went as her escort for quite a while, but then they got an escort and I didnt go for a while. Gosh i am wondering whether I know you, LOL. I met Valerie a couple of weeks ago at a MOVE presentation at my daughters school

yes just a wekk. i think the school are trialling it to see how popular it is. I think i may have to start organising 'other' things as I am starting to feel guilty about a 'trip to the park' 'or beach' being extra cirrular, its so hard to find anything though

We may well have at least have laid eyes on each other Fio lol! Valerie is lovely isn't she. When we first moved down here (summer 2003), all the arrangements via the AEN dept of the LEA got horrible cocked up.. I was spitting feathers in the end.. and Valerie did all she could to help out.. and she has a lot of clout in the SN division. She also once described DS as having 'a high social intelligence' which in a child who is delayed in just about everything, means a lot to a parent.. and she is quite right!

I was on the phone to his teacher at Pilgrims' Way yesterday and she said she had spoken to Valerie recently and who had expressed a wish to visit to see how Alex is doing! Bless!

I have just posted as pic of Alex this morning on the 'this is my..' thread.. sitting on a 'bike'.. does he look familar to you? He used to wear a different helmet.. a navy leather one.. (but he chewed the straps so much it got very 'minging', lol.. so he now has this off-the-shelf one that can be machine washing, yay!)

OMG!OMG! We were advised to look at Pilgrims way too I bet you can now guess which special needs school my dd goes to! how weird, do you get into Canterbury much? I have to pop and fetch dd in a while, LOL

Valerie was great with us when we moved down here too. She was such a good help to us and is always so welcoming when we meet her and remembers EVERY detail about dd, its amazing. You know, your ds and my dd sound very similar!

she absolutely LOVED it! far from being tired, she wouldnt stay blumin' still afterwards She was red in the face and playing in the hall when i got there and the carers said she never stopped laughing and smiling and thoroughly enjoyed herself, phew. Thank goodness

Its only one night a week jimjams and I have to set off on the bus about the same time she would usually come home, so not really doing it for myself maybe I should con them into the free transport home at 5.30 in the evening
