My closest friend has just informed me that there is a TV programme on Channel 4 next Thursday night at 9pm about The Spa Autistic School.

The title of this programme is

"MAKE ME NORMAL" WTF beyond words. WTF is "normal" anyway?

I am seething about this and feel so strongly im going to email channel 4 and express my disgust.

I don't know why its called that. I believe its part of a series of 3 or so, maybe the others explain that title better? WOuld be interested to hear why they have called it that if you can find out.

Is there a possibility that some of the people featured in it are heard to say those words??

It does seem rather a thoughtless title........but the programme may explain that - just a thought before you rush off and complain???

just found this quote on the Channel 4 website

"Roxanne just wants to be a normal teenager, but her realisation that autism is for life is extremely painful."

full article here

Which could explain the title if Roxanne 'wants to be normal'??

Ive quoted a comment made by someone who knows about the school and is teaching of ASD children.

"I have heard that the basic premise is that autism is 'a curse' and that they are all out for a cure or to make the children seem 'normal'.

Does anyone here know anything about the school?

I havent emailed yet....its just the title to the programme that has enraged me. I am the first to admit that sometimes I crave for a little "normality" in my life, BUT if I had the normality I would be presented with a different child to the one I know and love.

Well that would tie in with the quote from the Channel 4 website with one of the teenage girls "wanting to be normal".

Jayzmummy, don't send a stroppy email just yet! There's a short article in the Radio Times that explains the title, haven't got it to hand but something like one of the teenagers featured says something like "make me normal", she wants friends and a social life but just can't get it right. I'll read it again to check that's what its all about or see if you can get a copy. I do think the title of the prog could have been better thought through as a lot of people will see that without any background info and its rather alarming!

All my friends who have visited the school think its wonderful and it has a great reputation.
