Can anyone explain 'More Than Words' to me simply?

I am starting a course in September as its been recommended by our SALT and by out support worker. I have read the literature but it doesnt seem very clear what you have to do on the course (I am not looking forward to having to record myself!) Can anyone break it down for me simply

It's a brilliant course in my opinion and the techniques have helped my son enormously.

They show you various ways to encourage interaction with your child, whatever their level of functioning.
I hated the recording bit as well, but don't let that put you off. You can always opt out of that bit.
Ours was very relaxed but I suppose that depends on the leaders.

I've only done It Takes Two To Talk (the general language delay Hanen course) so can't really sum up More than Words for you, but would say IME these Hanen courses are well worth doing for the extra SALT visits you get as part of them. On my course the SALT were very sensitive about recording - they only recorded you to play back to you, so only you and SALT would ever see the videos. It is really instructive to be recorded, to be able to see yourself from the outside as it were.....

Weellll I was going to say its a rather mushy, limp song. Back in my day was it mostly strummed and tapped and mewed apart by any boy with a guitar hopeful for some sex

But yr wanting to know about the hanen course really I guess. Haven't done it but was interested in doing it. Our SALT wasn't so enthusiastic for it - said it was very good and all that but wouldn't really give us any more than what we were already doing

As far as I remember, there's this one and another course 'takes two to talk' or something. One is more aimed at children with ASD, the other more general SALT stuff. I can't remember which is which.

Hopefully someone who knows their onions will be along soon to tell you properly

It's not easy to put Hanen in a nutshell other than to say it is 'structured common sense'. You learn how to follow your child's lead and to encourage more interaction/engagement/language.

I did not like the videoing bit and it could be said that it was a bit of a waste of time as I would rather have spent time working with the therapist at home without the pressure of the filming. But yes they only show good bits so don't worry about seeing anything embarrassing !

I found 'More than Words' incredibly useful; it just gives you a lot of ideas to use in everyday situations. They seem like nothing, but they end up being second nature. I enjoyed the course a lot, also because it's a chance to meet other parents.
