Not Microcephalic after all

The last Paed report said DS1 was microcephalic - even though she did not measure his head at that appointment (was looking at old measurements). Today she measured his head and on the 0-5 chart, he is at the low end of normal, and on the 5-12 chart, his head measurement is well above the line for microcephaly

So not really that important in the grand scheme of things but shows you should ask when you are doubtful. It is annoying though that she sent a copy of the first attempt at a dx to all the other professionals who probably saw it as gospel because a Paed said it.

Now I can stop mentally measuring every child I see !

that is good news! Will she send another letter out to everyone to correct their information?

I still have a red book with 0-5 chart. I don't think 53cm would be Microcephalic but will check. But weirdly the 5-12 chart seems to have 'downsized' Microcephaly as he came really well on that chart.

forgot to say the 5-12 chart takes account of height/body frame so it is more a judgement about proportion as well as size in absolute terms.

ah ds is only 4 but he is nearer to a 3yo in height.if anything his head looks to big for the rest of him

Phoenix4725 Thu 23-Jul-09 10:11:16

I get conflicting accounts / diagnosis of microcephaly as well. dd's head is tiny - I buy hats for a 1 yo (she is 4)Er or a 2 yo if I'm trying to accomodate pigtails and a hearing aid on headband

Some of her docs refer to microcephaly, others not. Her main paed says it is proportinate to her small stature. Tho looking at my ds (average sized 21 mo), his head does look proportionatley bigger

snap fio. Maybe we should worry about our macrocephalic ds's instead

What about not too big and not too small cephalic - there must be a problem if the size is too much in the middle as well surely ?

Mediocephalic! grin
Ds has a huge head too.
