Today Dd1 broke DS' glasses on the way home from school, so because I knew his spare pair were at the shops waiting to be picked up, I decided to drop DD1 home and take Ds straight to town, to pick up his spare pair and get his normalone fixed again... anyway, in town there is about 4 disabled bays that are on the street and lots in Sainsburys, I decided to see if there was any on the street as its easier, and passed one just as someone pulled out so I decided to shoot round the block and get the space, as I came back, some young lad let his mate out and then parked in the only disabled bay left, I pulled up beside him and pointed to the Disabled signand asked if he was disabled and he said I'll be a minute and got out........ !!!!!!!! I was so annoyed I just sped off and parked in sainburys.... I was still angry when I got home, Dh saw a side of me he rarely sees.... I had driven round the block for sod all....... Wheres the traffic wardens when you need them???

Oh this makes me soooooooo Cross.

Dh once posed as a sainsbury's manager to support a young trolley lad who was trying to persuade a shopper not to use a disabled bay. Shopper was giving lad a hard time (verbal abuse). DH was on his way home from work, so wearing suit and tie. Went over to the lad and said "is there a problem here" Young lad explained, and addressed dh as Sir.
dh said to shopper "We would appreciate it if you would leave disabled bays free for the customers who need them"
Shopper grumbled but moved his car anyway. Dh would Never park in a disabled bay unless I was with him.

Gits! How very annoying

I know you couldn't have done much today SM but on occasions when you've got time and no errand to run there is usually a number you can phone to report people. We have a bay outside our house (just coincidence, not ours) and people somtimes (quite rarely) park in it after parking enforcement hours. Little do they realise it says "at any time" and that's what it means! I've got a phone number, think I got it from the usual parking dept at the Council, and it goes to the traffic wardens/attendants. I came home last Saturday and someone was in it with no permit so I phoned and within 10 minutes they towed them away! I did feel a bit guilty as its shitty to be towed away and I just parked further up the street but........

A warning about disabled bays in central London

My best friend went to London and parked in one showing her Blue badge

Got a ticket

Because in Camden you have to have a camden badge for disabled parking

The ones for rest of the country didn't count

{{Hope I have got colour right with Blue}}

Davros · 20/04/2005 23:09

That's not quite right.... I live in Camden. Its divided into 2 zones, the very central part being the green zone covering Covent Gdn etc and I can't even use my badge there as a Camden resident. The blue zone (they send you a map if you already know to ask for one) is free for all, residents' bays, P&Ds, Meters etc. Unfortunately the rules in each borough varies and there is nowhere to get all the info in one place (although I have emailed Transport for London and suggested it). Westminster is the worst because disabled parking is very controlled throughout the borough, even out as far as Maida Vale, just because they've got the central part too. Also Ken & Chelsea I think. In Westminster you can park on a meter/P&D for, say, 2 hours and if you have a blue badge you get an extra hour on top.... but how would anyone know that? Took me ages to find out and to understand it! Its a minefield, I've never had so many parking tickets as when I first got a blue badge as I kept making mistakes.

It wasn't well sign posted either

sorry for hijack

just thought you guys may get caught out by it too

No, they try to keep it all secret in the hope people will make mistakes, which they do. Mind you, I've got every ticket refunded through their "good nature" but its a pain to deal with. You can get quite close to the West End, just the other side of Russell Square or other side of Marylebone Rd. I've got the map if anyone ever needs it

So who can park in green zone then?

No disabled or only if you live in green zone

and are disabled

This was a disabled space

Davros · 20/04/2005 23:23

I thought you could park like elsewhere in the borough in Green zone if you live there but OK to use a proper disabled bay with a blue badge (if you can find one). She should write and appeal, it sounds wrong and, even it it isn't, they're quite likely to refund it anyway. If she wants any sample letter I've got plenty!

Davros! GRRRRRR indeed, sparklymieow...
People are so ignorant and inconsiderate. Somebody had parked in the disabled bay at our local soft play when DD's therapist took DD. She got found the culprit and asked why she had parked there and she said, 'because I have two small children and it's hard'. So DD's therapist said, 'Are either of them disabled?'. 'No,' the mum replied. 'Well count yourself lucky then and don't park in a disabled bay again!'. Once, though, somebody left a note on our dashboard saying that if our child was able to 'walk' up the road and we were able to walk with her, why did we have a disabled badge? Hello? Had they failed to notice dd licking the pavement, collapsing to the ground etc...

Slightly OT but when we were in France a couple of years ago I noticed that in a lot of the supermarket carparks the disabled bays had a sign on them that said (roughly translated)

If you take my space will you take my disability too?

Don't know if it did any good but hopefully it would make some people think twice. I certainly noticed it and we didn't even have dd then.

the courts where I work are on a park and ride site, we can see the disabled bays from the window of the office. Sometimes we send a security guard out to the car to put a note (along the lines of "parking outside a Mag Court illegally isn't a great idea") on, there is occasionally a park & ride attendant but he doesnt' wander over to our end very often . . .

That said most drivers are so cheeky, they use the turn off for the park&ride as a short cut, whizz round the roundabout and then bypass the queue at the lights - I think the attendant is too busy with them!

HITC i want some leaflets made up with those on.

saw a car in tescos once with a piece of papaer in the window saying something like 'tempory disabl;ed' WTF, surely they cant get away with that, everyone would be at it.

did have a go at a young business type at tescos as well. he told me there wasnt any other spaces nearby, roughly translated as 'no spaces close to the shop, and i want a nice wide bay so i cant park my sprts car in it so no one scratches it' i should've keyed the dam thing!

on an amusing note, I've just moved to a new purpose built building where I see patients. The planners made all the parking spaces disabled bays, thirty disabled bays and nowhere for anyone else to park unless they walk miles! As a result, the patients are in the building but the doctors and therapists they have come to see are elsewhere. This has actually led to cancelled appointments first thing in the morning!

I guess they can't always get it right!!

'Disability Now' and other organisations are doing a 'Baywatch' campaign and you can download a 'PLEASE MOVE' to stick on offending cars' windows.
