As some of you will prob remember ds who is 4.5 has suspected asd of some sort. But has recently had some kind of fit and is being referred to Nuerologist.

Since his little episode my ds seems to have gone worse. He is toilet trained, but has had 3 accidents today. His speach seems to be even more babyish than normal and he seems very disturbed and uncontrollable. He is already quite severe from what the school have said and we have had to keep him off a few days to try and get him back to normal.

Its that bad at the moment that we have decided with the school that he will just go for half days as he is struggling.

My question is though, is it possible that this fit could have made things worse?

Hi alfiemama, no personal experience of this, but I'm sure I've read of others dc's experiencing mild (and usually temporary I think) regressions following illness, seizure or immunisations, for example. I know that when my ds is unwell, his speech really suffers and he is very prone to tantrums.

Hopefully someone in the know will be along to give you some reassurance. It might be worth giving your paediatrician a call if things persist.

I hope things get better for you soon.

DD always has more accidents when ill, also more meltdowns. Actually, it's usually the only way I know she's ill!

Thanks Brioche, Nothing is apparent though and the episode that he had was they think a petit mal, where they go vacant.

My DS had his first seizure at the same age, a few months after starting in reception. I felt his speech was affected for a couple of weeks. He also did half days all the way through reception, as he wasn't coping.

A seizure can be quite unsettling, and certainly DS can be exhausted for days afterwards. In my experience, tirednes is a big factor in making his ASD symptoms worse, so yes it could be the fit that is affecting your DS.

Good luck with the neurologist, and hopefully this is a one off.

Thanks Widemouthfrog.

Im sure the half days will definately help, and the school agree, which makes me feel a little better and that Im not being a drama queen.

Hopefully a lady from the LEIS is coming into school on Wednesday, so this probably a good time to see my ds.

Without being cheesy, I do sometimes wonder where my son has gone.

I didn't even realise my DS was different when he started school. Then in reception my calm, happy boy completely changed. I wondered where he had gone too. Now in year 1 he is diagnosed with HFA and epilepsy - and though a complex little boy, as school have learned to deal with him (and him with them) I am increasingly seeing that calm, happy boy again.

I really worried about half days, but with hindsight it was right for him. He is now full time in Yr 1 and thriving. Good luck with LEIS - our lady was brilliant and got us to the good place we are now.

My DS age 7 (ASD) has never had a fit, but always struggles with everything if he's unwell. His concentration gets even worse, his speech regresses, any school work he'd previously seemed to understand is forgotten and he goes into his own little world again. He slowly emerges when he starts feeling better, and things go back to normal again.

Don't panic, your son will reappear soon, mine always does!
